This is a broadening of eligibility from, initially, men to later include women and then to include all members of the family. This coincides with social changes in the interwar years, leading into an economic depression.A4 size sheet of paper, folded in half to form four (4) faces. The front page has a picture of a young girl and boy sitting with their backs to each other. The remainder of the brochure is filled with information about Friendly Society membership benefits. Book, Our Sunday Stories, 1880's
This book was a prize given by the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School to Richard Petterd in 1888. The Warrnambool Baptist Church was established in 1864 in a small cottage in Kinross Avenue in Warrnambool at the home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Griffiths. In 1869 a church was built in Koroit Street and enlarged in 1974. From time to time more improvements were made and the church still operates from the same site today. A Sunday School was established in 1865. Richard Forrester Petterd, born in 1878 in Warrnambool, was the son of George Petterd and Mary Ann Petterd, nee Warn. He married Susanna McConnell in 1903 and died in 1935. A daughter, Muriel, married Frederick Wooles in 1933 and it was their son, Kenneth from whose estate this book has come to be added to the Society’s collection. This book is most significant as it is a rare memento from the early days of the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School and it belonged to Richard Petterd whose family was involved in businesses in Warrnambool as picture framers, stationery and fancy goods shop proprietors and estate commission agents. The book is a very attractive example of Victorian-era children’s books. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages It has a multi-coloured front cover depicting three children reading a book with a window behind them and floral decorations and two birds surrounding the three girls. The red binding is somewhat torn. The back cover has black and white etchings of flowers and children and advertisements for other books available. The book has several black and white drawings in grey tonings.‘Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School, Fourth Class United, Third Prize awarded to Richard Petterd, April 10th 1888.’warrnambool baptist church, richard petterd, kenneth wooles -

Instrument - Hydrometer, 1878 to 1930s
This Sikes brass hydrometer was manufactured by the optical and scientific instrument makers Kasner & Moss of 17 Collins Street West, Melbourne, in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The firm adverted hydrometers, as well as optical instruments, as early as August 13th, 1864, in The Age, Melbourne. This hydrometer set was donated to Flagstaff Hill in 1979 by local wine and spirits merchants Lynch Bros of Fairy Street, Warrnambool. Giffen Russell had established the business in 1878, and Harry Lynch took it over in the 1930s, and after he passed away in 1953 Kevin Matthew Lynch became proprietor of K M Lynch Food and Liquor. The business closed in the 2010s. The hydrometer may date back to the establishment of the business in 1878, as Kasner & Moss were selling hydrometers in Melbourne from 1864. Hydrometers were used to measure the density, or relative density, of liquids from the late 1600s. In 1816 Bartholomew Sikes won the competition for the most useful accurate hydrometer. Hydrometers were commonly used by distillers, vintners, and brewers to establish accurate measures of alcohol concentration in their beverages. Following this manufacturing process, government inspectors and excise officers used them to check that the labelled indications of alcohol-proof were correct and that the right amounts of duty were being paid. This hydrometer and its fitted and hinged wooden container show signs of heavy and protracted use in a working environment. Although the instrument has some parts missing and has been recently repaired, the original quality of the inlaid box and the fine engraving on the instrument and the attachable weights, are indications of the hydrometer’s very real value when new. This Sikes hydrometer, bearing the maker's mark of “Kasner & Moss Melbourne” and the registered number “20373”, was presented to the purchasing public as a precision-made instrument designed for professional use. The Sikes hydrometer is of local significance because of its implied association with the alcohol trade in the southwest region of Victoria. It was donated by a family member of Lynch Bros, a local licensed outlet for wines and spirits in the period before the general relaxation of liquor licensing laws in the State of Victoria. It may have belonged to Griffin Russell who established the liquor store in 1878.Hydrometer; original Sikes brass hydrometer in a polished wooden case with an inlaid plaque on the lid. The brass float is a sphere with a thin flat upper stem and a short, lower stem with a bulb-shaped end. The upper stem is engraved scale on both sides with the numbers 1 to 10, and five divisions between each number. There are ten fixed pegs in the base to secure the thick brass horseshoe-shaped, numbered, various-sized weights (20, 30, 40, 80, 90); the free pegs would have originally stored another five weights (10, 50, 60, 70, and 100). The empty compartment in the box suggests another part in the initial set, probably a thermometer. The fitted, fabric-lined box has two brass closures and two brass hinges. The scientific instrument shows signs of heavy use and repairs. The Serial Number on the float matches the Serial Numbers on the weights. The plaque on the lid, the float and the weights have inscriptions. Made by Kasner & Moss, Melbourne. Plaque: “SIKES HYDROMETER / KASNER & MOSS / MELBOURNE” On float's lower stem: “SIKES 20373” On one thin edge of the float's scale, engraved in script “Kasner & Moss” and stamped “MELBOURNE”, and symbol“P” rotated 90 degrees. On the opposite thin edge of the float: “N20.373”, “SIKES”, “I P % II O” (in ornate capitals). Marianne Gibson Quilt, 1891-1895
In this era women of Marianne Gibson's position in society were chaperoned and chauffeured, their role was that of wife and mother, busy in their home. Women did not have the vote and those who worked were servants who lived with families. The Gibson family was well respected in the community and Marianne was the mother of 8 children. The Marianne Gibson Quilt is one of the finest examples of crazy patchwork quilting known to exist globally. It features items from her husband's hardware shop, household objects, oriental designs as well as local fauna and flora and the quality of the needlework is outstanding. It is extremely well preserved and unfaded. For a short film about the Marianne Gibson Quilt, visit Culture Victoria: http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/marianne-gibsons-crazy-patchwork-quilt/11762/marianne-gibsons-crazy-patchwork-quilt/The Marianne Gibson Quilt is owned by the Wangaratta Historical Society and was placed on the Victorian Heritage Register in 2011. Marianne Gibson was born in Ireland and 1863 and married her cousin Alexander McCulla Gibson in 1864 in Wangaratta. The quilt is"...one of the finest examples of a crazy patchwork quilt in the world" (Victorian Heritage Register) and is composed of 9 blocks featuring silks and velvets with a backing of beige silk. The crazy patchwork style popular between 1876 and 1920 encompasses many different patterns that tell stories of that age and uniquely showcases local flora and fauna. Marianne made the quilt between 1891 and 1896. She loved flowers, birds, her garden and especially her family. This is evident in her quilt embroidery and stitching so lovingly demonstrated. Marianne died on 8th March 1911. She left the quilt to her daughters Clara and Edith who gave it to their housekeeper Miss Alma Gard in 1934. When Miss Gard retired to a nursing home in 1985 the quilt was donated to the Wangaratta Historical Society. MG 1891marianne gibson quilt crazy patchwork local fauna flora -

Photograph, W. D. Gibbon, 1905
Taken 1905 by photograph W.D Gibbons the photograph depicts a pathway leading to the administration building of the Beechworth Mental Asylum. There are three well-dressed young men lounging on the grass as another is jumping behind them. This is significant as it demonstrates that the asylum was not a prison and that the mentally ill patients were allowed their freedom. The Beechworth 'Lunatic' Asylum was constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD) and was later renamed the Mayday Hills Mental Asylum. The decommissioned asylum was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. At the asylum, active work was considered imperative and workshops were located near the male accommodations and laundries and drying yards near the female accommodation. The administration building itself highlights the architectural and aesthetic significance of the asylum to the State of Victoria. This photograph is historically significant as it demonstrates the architectural and aesthetic significance of the asylum but also the changing approaches to treating mental health. The construction on Lake Kerferd began in 1862 however it wasn't completed until 1874 due to engineering and funding issues. The lake was named after George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889) who was responsible for Beechworth's water scheme. George Briscoe Kerferd was born on 21 January 1831 in Liverpool, England and arrived in Melbourne April 1853. He spent his first years in Australia in Bendigo before settling down in Beechworth as a wine and spirits merchant. He married Ann Martindale on 17th December 1853 at St James Cathedral, Melbourne and between them they had three sons and five daughters. Kerferd began his political and legal career in Beechworth when he was first elected to the Municipal Council in May 1857. Later he would be elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Ovens District in November 1864, and continued to represent the area until February 1886. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the water reserves of Victoria. Mayday Hills Mental Hospital was originally constructed in 1864 under the name of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. It was built for locals in need of help who were kept in the local gaol. In its first decade, the residents of the hospital were used as menial labourers but over time, as mental healthcare progressed, were cared for in more nuanced ways. This site became a training hospital for nurses in the 1960's. Eventually, mental health patients were moved to other care facilities and Mayday Hills was operating as a geriatric care facility. It was closed in 1995, after which the buildings and their grounds were purchased to La Trobe University to be used as a campus. The university sold the site in 2011 to private ownership. This postcard depicts the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital (Titled as 'Asylum for insane') from a distance and includes the surrounding grounds and farmlands.Mayday Hills Mental Hospital is a historically significant site for many factors. It is representative of healthcare practice in nineteenth century Victoria. It contains rare examples of construction and architecture. Trophy, ICISA Mr R Swinton Esq 1933, 1930s
This trophy was awarded to the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) in 1933 as part of the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association competitions. The C. M. I. was an active men’s group connected to the Congregational Church in Warrnambool. A Congregational Church was established in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in 1864 and in 1940 it was transferred to Henna Street. The Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army in 1979 when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the Uniting Church. The donor of the trophy was Roy Swinton, a member of the Swinton family which has been prominent in the business world in Warrnambool since William Swinton established a store in Timor Street Warrnambool in 1865. He sold groceries, hardware, glassware and china. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street, making it one of the oldest family businesses in Australia. This trophy is of considerable interest as it is connected to the Swinton family, an important business family in Warrnambool for over 150 years, to the Congregational Church in Warrnambool in the 1930s and to the inter church sports association that was in Warrnambool in the 1930s. This is an electro plated nickel silver cup with two ornamental side handles and a circular lid with two ridged patterns and a small knob on the top. The stem under the cup is narrow and is attached to a circular silver base. The cup is mounted on a circular Bakelite stand. ‘Presented to I.C.I.S.A. by Mr R. Swinton Esq. Book, Drawing of Genius, c.1870
‘Dawnings of Genius’ by the Rev. Theodore Alois Buckley contains chapters on the lives the many distinguished men in history. Our copy of this work was given to Jane McMeekin as a prize at the Koroit Street School some time in the 1870s. The Koroit Street School was a Denominational Board School opened by the Wesleyan Church in 1859 with William Nettleton as the Head Teacher. It was later known as Common School No. 673 and closed in 1876 when the Warrnambool State School in Jamieson Street was opened. There is no date to tell us when Jane McMeekin received this book but we know that Caleb Collyer, who married Ann Brown in 1869, was Head Teacher of Warrnambool Common School No. 673 in 1875. Jane Taggart McMeekin was born in Mepunga in 1864 to John and Isabella McMeekin. She may have been about ten or eleven when she received this prize. This book is of considerable interest as it was a school prize in the 1870s and concerns Jane McMeekin, Caleb Collyer and Common School No. 673 – all of relevance and importance in the history of education in Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. It has a dark red leather cover with gold and black ornamentation and red lettering on a gold background. It has an introduction and thirty chapters on the lives of eminent men. It has many black and white illustrations. The cover is torn in places and somewhat stained and ragged around the edges. The University of Ballarat (later Federation University_ inherited the Camp Street Arts Precinct. As the functions of the former public buildings were moved elsewhere, the Victorian Government of the time recognised the importance of maintaining the heritage buildings and the opportunity to create a cultural precinct extending from the Art Gallery. The 19th century architecture along Lydiard Street and the dogleg bend of Camp Street define the precinct. With substantial financial assistance from both State and Commonwealth Governments, the Art Gallery Ballarat has been extended through to include the 1884 Police Station on Camp Street. The Post Office building (1864-1887) was acquired for the University. The 1904 and 1941 Courthouses and the c1900 Public Library building were also included. Two new buildings have been constructed. Taffrail log, Late 19th Century
John Bliss (1795-1857) was born in Connecticut, trained as a silversmith and clock maker in Vermont, and began in business as a jeweller in New York around 1830. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed chronometers and other items for navigational use. The firm became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957. Truman Hotchkiss, a sea captain from Stratford, Connecticut, designed a mechanical Taff rail log in which the recording mechanism was placed on taffrail (or upper part of the stern) of the ship. After acquiring the rights to Hotchkiss’s patents of 1864 and 1867, John Bliss & Co. began advertising the "American Patent Taffrail Log." The firm also offered mechanical logs based on patents granted to John Bliss, Jnr and his brother George, as well as English instruments based on Massey’s and Walker’s patents. The SPECULANT is historically significant as the largest ship to have been registered in Warrnambool, and is believed to have been the largest barquentine to visit Melbourne. It is evidence of the final days of large commercial sailing vessels involved in the Victorian and New Zealand timber trade. Newspaper - Lydia Chancellor collection: Tarnagulla
1. The Tarnagulla Presbyterian church was built in late 1863 at an estimated cost of 650 pounds plus bricks, and opened for services June 19th 1864. The first minister was Rev. Hamilton. A Sabbath School also opened at this time. The success of gold mining in the area and the resultant population fluctuations, had an impact on the church and in 1866 it was only operating on an occasional basis. It closed in the late 1870's, reopening in 1882 as a mission station. In 1912, repairs and improvements valued at 150 pounds were carried out. In 1926, when the Laanacoorie church closed, the building was transported to Tarnagulla to become the Sunday School Hall. In 1975 it became the Uniting Church. 2. The union Bank was originally a sub-branch of Melbourne and built a brick building in 1859. In 1866 the Union Bank bought the two storied building seen in the photo, from the Colonial Bank. where it remained until 1888. Two newspaper articles from the Bendigo Advertiser, one from 22/08/1953 and the other from 29/06/1950 relating to the presbyterian church and the Union Bank in Tarnagulla. Book - Psalms and Hymns Book, c. 1867
Psalm and Hymn books were personally owned by Church attendees (if they could afford it) and contained passages and songs from the Bible, from which the words and music for any service would have been selected .On the front cover of this Psalms and Hymn Book is the engraving, in Latin, 'Gloria In Excelsis Deo' which translates into ‘Glory to God in the Highest.' These words also form the chorus for the Christmas Hymn 'Angels we have heard on high." This particular Psalm and Hymn book belonged to Samuel Amess. After purchasing a house and some land on William St, West Melbourne, Amess joined with other businessmen to establish the West Melbourne Presbyterian Church. The first weekly services started in 1864. Wealthy church attendees would donate a substantial amount to the parish, and this enabled them to have their own personal reserved pew for each service. Amess reserved pew 120. Samuel Amess was one of the owners of Churchill Island in the late nineteenth century. After purchasing the Island from JD McHaffie in 1872, the successful stonemason and builder turned Churchill Island into a summer retreat for his family. He built Amess House, and two further generations of the family owned this Island until its sale in 1929. This psalms and hymns book is one of the few items with a strong provenance that was owned by the former Mayor.Dark brown hardcover c250pp. Front cover separated. Owned by Samuel Amess. Embossed on front cover: "GLORIA IN EXELSIS DEO" "ET IN TERRA PAX" Inside front cover, handwritten: "Samuel Amess/West Melb Presbyterian Church/Pew No 120/1st August 1879"samuel amess, churchill island, presbyterian, psalms, hymns, west melbourne -

Pamphlet - Meeting protocol, c. 1918
This pamphlet appears to be the wording for the initiation ceremony of a new member of the Sons of Temperance. The Sons of Temperance was founded in New York in 1842 and brought to New South Wales by the Baptist minister, Dr William Hobbs, a short time later. Division, or local branches, grew quickly so that in October 1864, a provisional Grand Division was formed with a commitment to spread the word on temperance throughout the country, and the advantages gained by joining a temperance benefit society. It was reported that by 1869, in New South Wales, there was a National Division, two Grand Divisions, and one hundred and seven Divisions, with a total membership of 5970. In 1868, members of the Church of Christ, Cheltenham, initiated a meeting to form a Division of the Sons of Temperance, which was subsequently called Star of Moorabbin Division, No 29. The meeting was held at the Cheltenham Temperance Hall on 30 September, with office bearers appointed and the larger membership acknowledged.Sitting in the back cover of the 1903 minute book of the Sons of Temperance, Star of Moorabbin Division, this pamphlet gives insight into the formal, ritualised manner of gatherings, particularly the initiation ceremony. The inclusion of 'Presiding Sister' in the script suggests this was created after 1918, when the movement officially accepted women into its ranks. However, it was placed within a minute that was discontinued in October 1917. Heavy card with black printed text, surrounded by border in a sort of chain link pattern. -
