Book, Jack Rooke, Life’s Highways and Byways, 1995
... out in the Ash Wednesday fires. Rooke’s story mirrors... out in the Ash Wednesday fires. Rooke’s story mirrors ...This is a booklet written by Jack Rooke about his life. Born in 1910 Jack Rooke faced early the challenges of living in the bush in the Camperdown and Panmure areas. He describes the difficulties of the small farmer and the tough living conditions. He also records the struggle to survive during the Depression years in the 1930s and his heartache after his farm was burnt out in the Ash Wednesday fires. Rooke’s story mirrors that of many settlers in the Western District in the early to mid 20th century and so he has produced an important social history in a simple but compelling manner. This booklet is of considerable importance as it gives the details of the life of one person facing the challenges of living in the bush in the district around Warrnambool in the 20th century. It is a simple but great social history that should be read by the younger generation today. This is a soft cover book of 40 pages. It has been self-published and home-produced with a buff-coloured cover and a plastic overlay. The cover has a black and white illustration. The pages contain some sketches and black and white photographs. early 20th century settlement in the warrnambool district, history of warrnambool -

Painting, Tina Saunders, Bushfire, 2013
Always wanting to paint the bushfire. Seen heaps of things with burning of heath land for Alcoa and went running through it like we were in the fire. It was beautiful but we were crying as we didn’t want them to do it. We were right in the middle of it as it was all glowing everywhere. Always fascinated by that fire when I think about it as we tried to stop it but they bought the police out and we couldn’t get in there as they had security and we were surrounded. We camped out there for four years we had the camp and would come and go from the house in town. Zac Martin and heaps of people in and out and good times with Uncle Banjo and newspaper journalists. 30 years ago this was, late 70’s and took 6 years to get them to court. Flew a guy out from America (the equaliser) who interviewed us about why we were doing it. They burnt right along the cliff whilst we were camped there and we had seen the seasons and got into the spirit of the land with native blossom and it was beautiful – and they burnt it all, all the little animals, it was incredible as the heathland was absolutely beautiful, it was magic and they could not see that. They pegged it out to do it all and we would sneak out and move the pegs and we tried to fight them every which way. Amy was there with all her kids in a massive striped tent but she moved them out when the police came to move us out. They had us surrounded, police from everywhere. We had no water and people would bring us water and food. Another time a big bushfire came through and we had to get in the dam at Lake Condah Mission. I was aged around 10 or 11.” June 2014 As recorded by Anna Louise Sheba for the entry in the Victorian Indigenous Arts Award Ballarat. Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, circa April 2003
... bushfires...bushfires ...This is a photograph taken in the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park near Chiltern in Victoria. On this day, the Wooragee Landcare Group was in the national park looking for signs of the tiger quoll. Tiger quolls can be found in few places with the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park being one of them. This photograph is of a tiger quoll nesting site as tiger quolls often nest between large rocks. This image also shows the damage caused by the 2003 bushfires. These bushfires happened at the same time as the 2003 Alpine bushfires. This bushfire started by lightning and quickly became the largest fire in Victoria since the 1939 Black Friday bushfires. The Alpine bushfires destroyed 1.3 million hectares and burnt for 59 days before it could be controlled. The 2003 bushfires severely damaged the environment and concern was raised about the safety of tiger quoll. This photograph displays how the nesting site was damaged by the fire. This meant that the quoll itself could have also been impacted by the fire. Hence why the Wooragee Landcare group went for a search for signs of the quoll. This photograph is significant because it shows a tiger quoll nesting site. Tiger quolls are a highly valuable species because they live in very few places. This, in turn, makes their nesting site valuable. This photograph also signifies the impact of the 2003 bushfires on the Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park. The image displays burnt trees which makes it clear that the fire was deeply damaging. The fallen log over the nesting site demonstrates how the bushfire must of put the tiger quolls at risk because of how the fire damaged their nesting site.
