City of Greater Geelong
Artwork, other - Oil on Canvas, Frederick Strange, William Weire - First Town Clerk of Geelong 1850 -84", 1845
Both William Weire and Frederick Strange were originally sentenced to be transported to Van Dieman’s Land from England making the painting likely to be a portrait of a convict by a convict. Gaining his ticket of leave for good behaviour in 1841, Strange became recognised for his portraiture and landscapes although he also remains known for his mysterious demeanour. He rarely signed his works which is the case with the portrait of William Weire. Having served his time, William Weire was granted unconditional freedom and successfully worked his way into influential local Launceston business and society circles ahead of leaving for Geelong in 1848 and being made the first Town Clerk for the newly formed Town of Geelong Council in 1850. He oversaw an incredible period of the earliest development of the Town of Geelong including the first migrant arrivals and the dramatic change that came with the discovery of gold in Victoria in the 1850s. The ex-convict turned Town Clerk was to read the formal welcome address to HRH Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Alexandra on the occasion of Geelong’s first royal visit. The portrait of William Weire was originally gifted to the City of Geelong by the Weire family in 1961.convict, geelong, town clerk, frederick strange, william weire -

Melbourne Legacy
Booklet, The First Brochure on the First Premiated Design. The National War Memorial of Victoria, 1928
A booklet produced by Hudson and Wardrop, Architects, who had won the contest for the design of the Shrine. This booklet shows their models of the Shrine in photos and diagrams of the site. It goes into detail of the plans for Rock of Remembrance, the eye of light, the porticos, the tympanums, the inner Shine, and materials it will use, etc. It says: 'The theme is Remembrance, and the doing is indicative of Remembrance. It is Australian in feeling, in that is stands for the highest of Australian ideals - ideals we fought for - Patriotism, Sacrifice, Justice and Freedom.' Messrs Hudson and Wardrop were also returned servicemen. This booklet could have been used to inform the public of the plans whilst fundraising for the building project. In 1928 the Governor asked for the public to contribute approx £100,000 towards the project, while the State Government had already guaranteed £80,000. (Actual budget ended up being £250,000). Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. Book, Mick Woiwod, Tread softly, you tread on dreams : Kangaroo Ground Cemetery's first 150 years / Mick Woiwod, 2001
Traces the history of the establishment of the Kangaroo Ground cemetery to its first burial through to 2001. Launched as part of the 150th anniversary of the cemetery. The Kangaroo Ground Pioneer Cemetery is the oldest operating cemetery in the Yarra Valley, it having opened in 1851 when the people of Kangaroo Ground had been faced with the need to find a place to bury, the 5 year-old sister of John and Joseph Furphy. For its first 140 years, its local trust managed cemetery affairs on a shoestring budget knowing that their turn too would inevitably come to pay burial fees. Of latter years its trust has been more upfront and has transformed its five or so acres into something its community can justifiably feel pride. Includes list of burial to 1951.Paperback; 159 p. : ill., ports. ; 21 cm.ISBN 0957945302kangaroo ground, kangaroo ground public cemetry, cemeteries -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Textile - Banner, c1872
This banner was one of five banners gifted to the Beechworth Chinese community in recognition of their support of the Hospital and Benevolent Asylum in 1875, from the Carnival Committee. These banners had been purchased in China by a social envoy from Beechworth then presented to the Chinese community during the Beechworth Fine Arts Exhibition in May of that same year, by Donald Fiddes, President of the Ovens District Hospital. The Burke Museum's Chinese Collection presents the history of Chinese settlement in Beechworth from 1856 and its involvement in local community affairs in the second half of the 19th century. In settling in the area they formed their own community with distinctive Chinese cultural traditions, forming their own 'camps' with laid out streets, housing a Temple, Chinese Theatre and restaurants, hotels, stores, gambling houses and dwellings. Members of the Chinese community took an active interest in town affairs and were generous donors to the appeal to build the Ovens District Hospital in 1856/7. The vibrant colours and dynamic graphics of the silk embroidered Chinese banners were a highlight of Beechworth Charitable processions that took place in the main street. Two of the Chinese banners were conserved for the Burke Museum in 2006 by Carol Campbell of Phoenix Conservation Services with funding from Victoria’s Heritage Grants. In 2015, with the enormous support of the Copland Foundation and fundraising activities by the Friends of the Bur Museum Committee, conservation of the third banner was undertaken by Artlab Australia in Adelaide. The banners display traditional Chinese textile techniques and are visually beautiful and very rare and are considered of local and national significance, with the potential to be deemed internationally significant. The banner has a narrow fuchsia embroidered top border, a wider embroidered panel depicting 2 dogs with embroidered Chinese text and a larger lower panel with the embroidered text “PRESENTED TO THE CHINESE OF BEECHWORTH BY THE COMMITEES OF THE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS (missing) THAT TOWN IN COMMEMOR (missing) OF THE CARNIVAL 1873” The 2 lower panels have narrow decorative borders decorated with mirrors and extensive embroidery. There is an additional embroidered tab running along the right hand edge. The bottom edge has a wide knotted fringe. The back is lined with fabric decorated with a painted scene.
