This textbook was written for engineering students by Scottish Professor, William J Goudie, D. Sc., (1868-1945). He was a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, James Watt Chair of Mechanical Engineering, University of Glasgow, and Professor of "The Theory and practice of Heat Engines" in the University of Glasgow. He wrote several papers and books on the topics of mechanical speed and power. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co., was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The first practical steam turbine was built in 1884 by Charles Parsons and this became the beginning of generating electricity and powering large ships. The author of Steam Turbines, Professor William John Couldie D. Sc, was a mechanical engineer who had practical experience in a marine consulting engineering service and lectured in the theory and practice of mechanical engineering.This book is an example of the development of technology that contributed to the evolution of steam turbines. The book is also significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more.Steam Turbines, by William J. A fleet of Transport Ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the specific purpose of transporting various AIF formations to the respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were employed on other duties. The fleet was made up of British Ships and captured German Ships. The HMAT Medic weighed 12,032 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd Liverpool, she was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 26 October 1917.This photograph is of HMAT Medic leaving Australian Shores 20-05-16. This microscope is thought to be one of the earliest 'mineral microscopes' obtained by the Ballarat School of Mines. This whole of school photograph depicts the school pupil population in the "prosperous twenties". The pupils have been congregated against the external wall on the SE side of the school outside the Head Master's office and pupil's cloakroom. This is one of several photographs taken in 1922; others feature composite groups of classes. The photograph records the post-war school population at its peak in 1922. The following year,St. Mary's Convent School would commence and numbers at Myrtleford State School 955 would decline for the rest of the decade. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Samuel Baird attended Ballarat College 1864 - 1872. He was the first student enrolled at the school. His father, Samuel Baird, was the first engineer for the city of Ballarat. According to his grandson Samuel Baird was indentured to a local chemist in Ballarat. He moved to Melbourne and took over the chemist business Hood and Co in Elizabeth Street Melbourne. This business remained in the family for a further generation. This certificate is accompanied by an earlier certificate indicating that Samuel also sat a matriculation examination in October 1871 and passed in four subjects (000132.1). The certificates are accompanied by signed receipts from the University of Melbourne for matriculation examinations at a totla of four times - Receipt no 503 30 October 1871 for 5 subjects (000132.2) Receipt no 495 6 August 1872 less than six subjects (000132.3) Receipt no 696 29 October 1872 for 8 subjects (000132.4) Receipt no 195 14 February 1873 for matriculation exam (000132.5) for purchased copies of matriculation certificates. This infers that Samuel Baird sat some portion of the matriculation certificate over four examinations. Record 000131 is related to these items being a reference from the Principal Robert Oliver McCoy for Samuel Baird written in 1873. Historic significance for its connection with the first student of Ballarat College. Single sheet form printed on one side with handwritten insertions. This technical textbook is the nineteenth edition of the book by Henry Raper, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy with awards that include F.R.A.S. (Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society) and F.R.G.S. (Friend of the Royal Geographical Society). The book is dedicated in honour of Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort K.C.B., Hydrographer to the Admiralty. He was awarded the title K.C.B. (King's Commander) as a Member of the Order of Bath, an order of British Chivalry, The book was first published in 1840 and soon became a resource for navigation students. It includes topics on nautical navigation, astronomy, navigation charts, calculations and mathematical tables, time, tides, ships, longitude, and position at sea. Thomas A. Hull, who revised and expanded this edition, was a Commander in the Royal Navy and had previously been Superintendent of Admiralty Charts used for navigation worldwide by seamen from many walks of life. The publisher, J D Potter of London, was at that time the sole agent for the Admiralty Charts produced by the Royal Navy. Printer Spottswoode and Co.,. was established by William Strachan in 1738. In 1819 his nephews A and R Spottswoode took over the business and bought premises in New-Street Square and Shoe Lane. In 1850 over 200 workers were employed by the firm. and five years later the business became Spottswoode & Co. The making of cordials and aerated waters was an important industry in Warrnambool from the time of the first settlement up to the 1980s. John Rowley was a prominent producer of aerated waters and cordials from 1868 to his death in 1893 (the Warrnambool Steam Aerated Works). He was known for his originality in the production of soft drinks and produced 20 varieties of drinks, including his own Henneberry Wine and Lime Fruit Champagne, both non-alcoholic. In the 1870s he was producing 600 dozen bottles a day and in the 1880s his cordial factory occupied half an acre of land and employed 13 people. He won many awards for his products at local Agricultural Shows. Warrnambool cordial bottles are of considerable significance as examples of an important industry now gone. Rowley is a significant person in the history of 19th century Warrnambool industries and Rowley bottles are of considerable importance, especially this one, made for efferverscent drinks. This is a heavy glass bottle (no stopper) possibly used for hop bitters or ginger wine or some contents that had high efferverscent qualities. The bottle has a heavy indented base. This is a service calling card from L.J.Kermond, a radio and electrical dealer and a servicer of these items. He operated from 4 Lava Street and later from 153A Lava Street and the dates found for this business are the 1950s and 60s. He later operated from Fairy Street and was well known in the district for his work in outside broadcast.This card is of interest as an example of the type used by servicing departments of business in Warrnambool in the 1950s and 60s. This is a grey coloured card (lightweight cardboard) used as a service call card by the radio and electrical service firm of L.J.Kermond. Joseph Wilder, a professional photographer, came to Warrnambool in 1860 and took a series of photographs, two of which survive today. One was of the local Volunteer Corps and the other was a series of photographs taken from Cannon Hill showing Merri Street and the town and buildings beyond. It seems that copies of these last-mentioned photographs were framed to produce a large panoramic view of 1860 Warrnambool and one of these was given to the old Warrnambool Museum in the 1880s by James Astley Bromfield. He had established a chemist’s shop in Warrnambool in 1854 and showed his interest in the history of the young town by producing a map in 1856 showing the first landowners, a seminal resource today for historians. He again demonstrated this interest when he included the names of the people and places in the 1860 photograph he gave to the museum in the 1880s. The frame fragment was found amongst the collection of items from the old Museum at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and brought to the Historical Society to accompany the original series of photographs. Bromfield went to live in Melbourne in the 1880s. It is presumed that the plastic cover has been placed on the frame fragment at a much later date than the 1880s.This frame fragment is interesting and very important for several reasons:- 1. It is one demonstration of the interest that James Astley Bromfield had in local history 2. It came from the old Warrnambool Museum and shows how that institution kept items of historical interest 3. It gives us the names of the people and places in the Joseph Wilder photographs of 1860 that placed together form a panorama that reveals what a major section of Warrnambool looked like only 13 years after its foundation. The list enables us to correctly identify the early places and people and so is invaluable for research purposes 4. It links a Museum exhibit of the 1880s with the original 1860 photographs which are held by the Historical Society This is a piece of wood broken from a frame containing a photograph. It has jagged edges. It contains the list of people and places depicted in the Joseph Wilder panorama photograph of Warrnambool in 1860.
