An example of a Melbourne Intermediate Legacy Club Badge. The pin has a cover that screws onto the shaft of the pin to keep it in place. ILC was formed from junior legatees who had become too old for the usual junior legatee activities. It was most active from the 1930s to 1950s. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. A list of servicemen that were submitted for inclusion on the Junior Legacy Honour Roll. However the document mentions this list is of those 'for whom there was no "master card" or concerning whose entitlement to entry on the Roll there is some doubt'. There is a column for 'Here enter any known details'. The final Honour Roll lists junior legatees that served overseas in the armed forces, initially World War Two, and displayed in cabinets in Legacy House. The purple type implies it was made with a renostat form of printing so was a copy of the original document. The final page has a note to return the form to Junior Legacy. Photograph of a building on Legatee Stan Savige's property. It is labelled as Legacy Camp, Somers. This appears to be the original camp buildings established by Legacy in the 1930s. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring East, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Correspondence dated 24 February 1970 - 6 March 1970 concerning an invitation to a Dinner Dance at Government House on 7th April 1970 in honour of The Prince of Wales and The Princess Anne, hosted by Miss Frances Anne Delacombe. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. The newsletter from June 1957. It featured a the Governor of Victoria and his wife with children on a carousel on the cover as there was an article about the Government House Christmas party in 1956. The president's introduction talked about the Commonwealth countries. An article featured two former Junior Legatees that had had success, John Woodley and Ron Rudd. Legacy had advised both boys to obtain entry to the greatest school of navigation in Southampton UK. They were only two Australians selected in 1955. They had recently visited Legacy and spoke at Legacy meetings. A detailed recap of what was happening at Harelands, naming several JLs and what they were up to. Including Helen James, Ken Knape, Garry Thompson, Peter Turton and Bob Neilson. Also Margaret Gregory, and Lillian May. Also what the boys classes were up to by suburb. Bill Roycroft, was an Australian Olympian Equestrian, who rode in five consecutive Olympics 1960 to 1976. He helped his team win Gold at Rome Olympics with broken arm. He was flag bearer for Australian team in 1968 Olympics and in his final Olympics was the oldest Olympic competitor at age 61. Tony Charlton, TV sports commentator with Channel Nine, producer and commentator of film. The connection between Bill Roycroft and Legacy is not known. Sound and colour. A film about the Shrine of Remembrance which was made in April 1981 (from the label). Documents the history of the Shrine by interspersing images of war with returned servicemen's marches. The film shows archival images of Australia in 1914 and accounts from WWI, which gave rise to the campaign to build the Shrine in the 1920s. Gen.Sir John Monash, after consulting with Legacy, lent his support and it was opened in 1934 by the Duke of Gloucester, becoming the focus of commemoration in Victoria. The forecourt with the Eternal Flame was added in 1954 to commemorate the fallen of WWII and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II. Junior Legatees are shown paying their respects at one of their annual commemorations. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. The commentary notes how the fitness programmes avoided bad posture which would 'lead to a loss of confidence in a sensitive child' and helped them to avoid 'falling into bad company and delinquency.' It also noted the 'wise counsel' given to their mothers by Legatees and details the assistance available from Legacy to 9,000 fatherless families in Victoria alone. There are synchronised exercises, judo demonstrations, mass marching, girls creative dancing and a final tableau in readiness for two night's public performances. A book of photos that records the activities of the dependents with disabilities group during Legacy's Somers Camp in 2012. It is full of photos without captions but the enjoyment of the participants is clear. Part of the introduction says: "Our sixty dependants enjoyed 12 days in each others company supported by a team of generous volunteers. Melbourne Legacy's support of or Dependants with Disabilities represents a very important part of the work which Legacy does. Our widows are reassured in the knowledge that their children will have support throughout their lives from a caring and concerned organisation." Most junior legatees are helped until they reach 18 years of age. However, the group of disabled dependents are helped for their whole life. Which gives peace of mind to the family that Legacy will always be there to care.
