It was previously hung alongside a painting of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, but has been moved to storage in the archive. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ian Anderson, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Ian Anderson was President in 1964, during which there were 7,000 children in Melbourne Legacy's care and approximately 9,500 widows. Badge Day raised 120,000 pounds. He had also served on the Legacy Co-ordinating Council for many years and was it's president in 1969-1971. Also a death notice and note published in the Bulletin when his wife Gwenda Anderson passed away in 1989 The article was part of an folder about of past presidents that served on the LCC in preparation for the photo board that was produced. A programme of an art exhibition of 77 pieces of artwork by Lieutenant Daryl Lindsay in 1919. The Introduction was written by the war correspondent CEW Bean. Mr Lindsay's connection with Legacy is not known. A legatee Ray W___ donated this copy of the exhibition programme and the original of the cover print and a watercolour 'The road to Poperinghe' to Legacy in October 1984. At one stage they were in the Comradeship Room. As at December 2019 the original of the cover print is on loan to the Shrine of Remembrance and on display. The caption at the Shrine reads," 'Soldier'1918 by Daryl Lindsay (1889-1976). Daryl Lindsay was appointed an official war artist in 1917. He had worked as a batman for his brother-in-law Will Dyson, also an official war artist, from the end of 1916. Lindsay's sketches documented the facial injuries of soldiers, in order to assist then plastic surgeons undertaking facial reconstruction at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. His artistic skills led to his appointment as an official medical artist at the hospital in 1918." The notation H34 in red pen shows that it was part of an early archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A soldier put together artwork about World War One and exhibited it in Melbourne in 1919. Later two of his artworks were donated to Legacy.Dark brown cover with cream insert of a sketch of a solider. A slide image of Legacy House from 1961. after it had been repainted. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289-299 Swanston St was purchased. Legacy celebrated its Centenary in 2023 by conducting a Torch Relay from Pozieres in France, to London, and around Australia, ending in Melbourne on 13th October 2023. Torchbearers were supplied with a white uniform, socks and hat to wear during the relay. The photos show Legatee Chas Wilks visiting Legatee Morrie Tonkin in hospital and presenting a certificate to mark his 50 years of service to Legacy. From the note it seems he gave his Presidential badge back to Melbourne Legacy. Legatee M.J.G Tonkin was president in 1952. The Torch Society are people that have made substantial donations to Melbourne Legacy and/or have left a bequest to Legacy in their Will. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp, this is believed to be Somers School Camp. These photos are from 1992. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 junior legatees attended this camp (in 1992) with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. A new campaign by Melbourne Legacy to assist Legatees with facts and talking points to aid Legatees when making contact with prospective donors. Sections of the booklet include: Our aim in education; Health is watched; Physical and cultural; Career guidance; Legacy Residences; Holidays and camps; Legal assistance, and Free Firewood. Job application dated 6 February 1943 by Mr R Roper of Albert Park for the position of Manager of the Legacy Club Hostel. It lists his experience in WWI and running a farm in Gippsland. Holmbush was the first children's home established by Melbourne Legacy. It was later renamed Blamey House when the first Blamey House was sold. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. A newsletter covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. The October edition covers a 2007 reunion of former Junior Legatees. Generally The Answer includes photos of events, a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend many activities including, swimming exercise classes, stamp group, craft, walking group, Monday Concerts, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The September 1992 edition of the Melbourne Legacy newsletter was the first to be called 'The Answer'. The name comes from the verses that guides the work of Legacy - 'In Flanders Field' and 'The Answer'.
