The Grand Order of Oddfellows was a friendly Society founded in Manchester in 1798. It began in Australia in 1844 with the first Victorian branch established in 1854. A dark wooden plaque with the Victorian coat of arms in metal relief of two female figures standing on a mound of grass on either side of the Southern Cross shield. The figure on the left represents Peace and holds an olive branch, while the figure on the right personifies Prosperity and holds a cornucopia. Above the shield is a knight's helmet and a kangaroo holding an Imperial crown. The motto 'PEACE AND PROSPERITY' is on a banner below the shield and under that a banner read's 'VICTORIA'S 150th YEAR' and the dates 1834 and 1984. Lloyd Lindsay Competition In 1873 Colonel Loyd Lindsay introduced a prize for mounted riflemen. The initial experimental competition was a great success and it was for many years a feature of the various shooting programs. The conditions in 1873 required that sections of four mounted men were to ride about three quarters of a mile, taking two flights of hurdles in the course, and were, while dismounted and their horses either linked or held by alternate files, each to fire five shots at 200 yards standing, and the same number at 400 yards in any position. There was a time limit of twelve minutes, and the rifle, of any Government pattern, had to be carried on the back or slung to the saddle. 13TH GIPPSLAND LIGHT HORSE HANDSOME TROPHIES ON VIEW Thery are on view in the window of Mr. A. W. Bennett, Jeweller, some handsome trophies which were pre sented to the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse, and which are worthy of the admiration they have elicited. A handsome pair of solid silver candal abra, presented to the officers mess of the Regiment by Mrs. Norman Mc Lean in memory of her husband, the late Lieut. Norman McLean, who for many years was a member of the re giment, are a fine piece of workman ship and valued at £200. The silver cup donated by the same lady for competition amongst the Regimental troops, is also very handsome. The late* Hon. .William - Pearson, M.L.C., who was Honorary Colonel of the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse Re giment, presented a handsome silver cup. for competition amongst the' troops of the 'regiment, Iand teams will compete 'for it annually at the camp of continuous training. This padlock is a heavy duty item but it is ornate enough to have been used on a large front door or other room in a household or business. The padlock is locked and there is no accompanying key. Today padlocks may still be made of metal but they are considerably more lightweight. This item is retained as an interesting example of a padlock used in the past.This is a metal padlock made in a shield shape with a raised ornamental piece of brass patterning surrounding the key mechanism. James Albert Rintoule entered Ballarat College 1888; son of Robert Rintoule of Nhill and previously educated at Nhill State School to the 5th Form. James was a significant sportsman winning medals for high jump in 1888 and 1891 as well as hurdles in 1891. He continued his sports after leaving the school, winning the 1893 Albion Football Club Best Place Player. James' great nephew and niece James (1962) and Helen (1967) also attended the school. Such elaborate rewards for athletic events demonstrates the significance of sports in the school's culture at the end of the 19th century. Saved from the ship Speke which ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The figure head of the Speke was in the shape of woman, wearing a flowing white dress with blue cuffs and collar and carrying a large bunch of daffodils. It was originally nine feet four inches long. This sculpture went missing after the event and decades later the head only was re-discovered in Mr Thompson’s garage. It was then restored by Headmaster Kevin and the senior children of Cowes State school in 1940.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights. These cuff links were a 21st Birthday gift to Ronald Arthur Edwards from his brother Stan in August 1935. Ron had polio and had problems walking. Stan drowned in 1936 in Tonumbarry Weir spillway.
