Ceremonial object - Lansell Pendant, George Lansell Jnr, AKA Mayoress Pendant, 1956
Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. The Bendigo Mayoress medallion was commissioned by Sir George Lansell Jnr in the tradition of making a mayoral presentation in gold. It was first worn by Mayoress Snell and was presented to her on April 11th, 1956 at the municipal centenary dinner at the Shamrock Hotel. The medallion was passed on to each subsequent Mayoress when the new Mayor was appointed. The Mayoress medallion was commissioned by Sir George Lansell Jnr in the tradition of making a mayoral presentation in gold. The drop and chain have been hand crafted n 18ct yellow gold and engraved by a master engraver also by hand. Photograph - Framed Photograph of the Proclamation of Warrnambool as a City, Arthur Jordan, 1918
This is a framed photograph showing a key event in Warrnambool's history - the proclamation by Sir Arthur Stanley of Warrnambool as a city in 1918. Warrnambool was the fifth non--metropolitan town in Victoria to be declared a city and a large crowd gathered outside the Town Hall to see this event. Sir Arthur Stanley (Lord Stanley of Alderley) was an English nobleman, Parliamentarian and soldier who was the Governor of Victoria from 1914 to 1920. The photographer was Arthur Jordan who, like his father Joseph, was a prominent photographer in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries and took many official photographs of civic affairs. The donor of the photograph, probably immediately after the event to the Warrnambool Museum at the time under the auspices of the Warnambool Mechanics' Institute, was George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Councillor and Mayor. He was probably responsible for the framing of the photograph. This is a significant photograph as it is a record of an important event in Warrnambool's history and is a great research toolThis is a black and white photograph in a polished wooden frame with a card inset and a glass covering. The photograph shows the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley, in civilian dress standing on a platform outside the Warrnambool Town Hall proclaiming Warrnambool a city. Behind the Governor on the platform are many men and some women and in the foreground left is a band and in the foreground centre are Army school cadets. The photograph frame has a wooden backing with a piece of wire attached for hanging the object. In the photograph also is a columm with a sign on it.His Excellency the State Governor Sir Arthur Stanley Proclamation- Warrnambool a City 23rd May 1918 Warrnambool Museum & Art Gallery Presented by G.S.Mackay Warrnambool Arthur Jordanwarrnambool -a city in 1918, sir arthur stanley, george s. mackay, arthur jordan -

Slide, Bowls tournament, 1960s
Sir Dallas Brooks at a Legacy Bowls tournament. Names of the legatee with him is not known. The trophy awarded to the winner was named after Sir Dallas Brooks who was a patron of Melbourne Legacy when he was Governor of Victoria (1949-1963). It shows a close relationship between Legacy and the Governor of Victoria. Melbourne Legacy held regular bowls tournaments for Legatees. Some events were as a fundraiser for Legacy and well as a social event for legatees. The date is estimated to be the 1960s as it was with other slides from that period. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of the type of activities Legacy provided as a social outlet for the Legatees and the patronage of the Governor.Colour slide of Sir Dallas Brooks at a Bowls Tournament in Kodak mount. The mount is imprinted with a slide number (19).bowls, legatee event, dallas brooks, governor of victoria -

The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Supreme Court of Victoria Library
Plaster Portrait Bust, Justice Redmond Barry, 1884
The library committee had already commissioned a portrait of Sir Redmond Barry when they purchased this bust of Barry along with that of Justice Fellows. The library still holds the receipt for this purchase of 24 pounds. The purchases were probably part of the program of outfitting the library interiors and may have been purchased for the niches, that were later covered with the portraits, ironically one of these was of Barry. Redmond Barry is an important figure in colonial Victorian history, responsible for the establishment of key cultural institutions as well as a Supreme Court Judge for nearly 30 years, presiding over both the Eureka trials and the trial of Ned Kelly. The bust of Redmond Barry is of some interest as part of the original furnishings of the library. It represents one of a number of bust portraits of Barry and is of some significance as it portrays Barry, an important figure in Victorian history. The bust is also of interest as a work of James Scurry, most well known for his architectural sculpture.Plaster bust of Justice Redmond Barry. The bust itself is painted white. The pedestal has been painted for a red and black marble effect. Barry's name appears in gold lettering. The Bust is larger than life size. The head is finely detailed with Barry in contemporary clothing with a bow tie and his orders on his chest.Sir Redmond Barry -

Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Cleaning Crew for the 'Sir Thomas Mitchell" Locomotive S301, 1938
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Left to right: Jack Hinchcliffe, George Lynch, Bill Orchard, Hec Lloyd, ; BILL ROWE; Bill Rowe, Bill McLaren, Jack Dore, Jack Bowden, George Judge, Harry Alderson, Charlie Edmondson, Fireman Cyril Hughes. "Sir Thomas Mitchell" Considered by many to be Victorian Railways' greatest passenger locomotives, the 4 S class steam locomotives were the first 3 cylinder steam locomotives. This small class was built to run the Melbourne to Albury passenger trains and spent their entire careers on the North East line. They were built unstreamlined and ran in this condition until 1937. The streamlining modifications complimented the all new "Spirit Of Progress" carriages. The S class ran the "Spirit" until 1952 at which time the newly delivered B class diesels took over.
