Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Functional object - Seal - Police Office, Belvoir
This seal was used for official police and court documents by the Belvoir Police Office. The initial land survey for the city now known as Wodonga was first undertaken in 1852 by Thomas Wedge - Assistant Surveyor. The new township was called "Belvoir" and was proclaimed by that name in 1852 and again in 1861. The first sale of land in Belvoir was held at Wangaratta on April 28, 1854, when all the allotments surveyed by Thomas Wedge (excepting those set apart for reserves, government and public areas) were offered at auction. Following representations by the Postmaster General on June 23, 1869, the Governor in Council, on July 12, 1869, approved of its Aboriginal name "Wodonga" being restored. The seal was found at the Yackandandah Courthouse by the Circuit Judge, the late Mr. Jim Humphrey. As the Wodonga Historical Society was in recess at that time, the seal was held in trust by the North-East Historical Society in Wangaratta. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society in 1987.This item was the official seal of the Belvoir Police office from the beginning of the European settlement of the modern day city of Wodonga, then know as Belvoir. Furniture - Chair, ca. 1944
This chair, one of a set of three, was part of the original furnishings of the St Nicholas' Mission to Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria. The Church was operated by the Mission to Seamen organisation. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen was an Anglican charity that served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the organisation began in Williamstown in 1857 as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’ in an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This chair is historically significant for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. The organisation originated in Bristol, England, when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. Chair, dark brown wood, curved backrest. One of a set of three. The two front legs are decoratively shaped (turned), while the back legs are plain and flat-sided. It has an almost square flat seat. Braces - straps worn over shoulders for holding up trousers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspenders Suspenders (Am. English) or braces (British English) are fabric or leather straps worn over the shoulders to hold up trousers. Straps may be elasticated, either entirely or only at attachment ends and most straps are of woven cloth forming an X or Y shape at the back. Braces are typically attached to trousers with buttons using leather tabs at the ends or, incorrectly according to traditional protocol, clips.. HISTORY the modern type were first invented in 1822 by Albert Thurston and were once almost universally worn due to the high cut of mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century trousers, a cut that made a belt impractical. After losing popularity in the first World War, as men became accustomed to uniform belts, suspenders were still standard throughout the 1920s. A single rollover kerb has just been laid on western side cut into the embankment. At the crest of the hill on right in front of the Ford Laser is a fire hyrdant. This photo was processed at the same time as image EDHS_07261 of roadworks in Sackville Street about 200 m away which has been dated as c.1983 (between Sep 1982 and May 1983). The paling fence on the left has a change of angle just before the crest of the hill then flattens. More recent Google Streetviews show the same fence and shape and in more recent times a new fence but same shape. Google Streetview for Jan 2008 indicates a more recent road widening and new profile kerb and channel. The embankment was further cut away and the footpath that was adjacent to the fence lowered to road level. The fire hydrant that was on the right hand side has been relocated to the left next to the footpath. Significantly more electrical wires are now strung on the telephone poles. In 2017 Bolton Street was again upgraded. The fire hyrdrant was then relocated to another (unknown) location.1983, footpaths and gutters, road construction, road drainage, road sealing, bolton street, eltham, sackville street -

Tool - Cabinet Scraper, 1945-1955
A cabinet scraper (sometimes called a ‘card scraper’) is a woodworking tool used for shaping and finishing furniture. The name ‘cabinet’ is used because scrapers are versatile and important tools for cabinet makers to provide a smooth surface to a finished cabinet. The body and the cutting edges of most cabinet scrapers are formed from a single piece of material. The blades are created on each edge of the body. Also, a scraper can have adjustable blades and a wooden handle these are two-handled cabinet scrapers. Cabinet scrapers are used manually to scrape small amounts of material from the surface of the wood to smooth it, shape it, or remove an old finish such as varnish from its surface. They are commonly used on furniture and musical instruments such as guitars and violins. The tools can be used on hardwood or softwood but when using a cabinet scraper on any wood, you should generally work along the grain.A tool used to finish timber to give a smooth finish and a important tool for a cabinet maker that has been in use for many hundreds of years in different design formsBox scraper adjustable with long wooden handle.Noneflagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, box scraper, scraper, woodwork tool, cabinet scraper, furniture finishing -

Functional object - Ship's Rib or Knee, before 1850
This hanging knee was from the 1850 wreck of the schooner Enterprise. The 'hanging knee' or a 'ship's knee' is used for bracing a frame or supporting a beam. It is either a naturally bent piece of wood or wood cut into a bend like an elbow. The knee can be used in the frame of a boat or ship to spread load. THE “ENTERPRISE” 1847-1850 The wooden, two-masted schooner Enterprise was built in New Zealand in 1847 and registered in Melbourne, Australia. The Enterprise carried cargos of agricultural produce and other commodities for trade between the ports of the Colony. On September 14, 1850, the Enterprise was at anchor in Lady Bay under its Master, James Gardiner Caughtt, loaded with a cargo of wheat and potatoes. A strong south-easterly wind caused the vessel to drag on its only anchor and the rudder was lost. The gale-force wind blew it sideways and it became grounded. A local indigenous man, Buckawall, braved the rough sea to take a line from the shore to the Enterprise. All five members of the crew were able to make it safely to land. The Enterprise was wrecked. The Enterprise wreck was in an area called Tramway Jetty in Lady Bay. Since then the area became the location of the Lady Bay Hotel and now, in 2019, it is in the grounds of the Deep Blue Apartments. In fact, with the constantly changing coastline through built-up sand, the wreck site is now apparently under the No 2 Caravan Park on Pertobe Road, perhaps 150 metres from the high tide. Its location was found by Ian McKiggan (leader of the various searches in the 1980s for the legendary Mahogany Ship). DIFFERENTIATING the New Zealand Schooner “Enterprise” from John Fawkner’s “Enterprize“ Dr Murray Johns, Melbourne, says in his article The Mahogany Ship Story “… As I documented in 1985, the Warrnambool wreck was of an entirely different ship, also called Enterprize [with the spelling ‘Enterprise’], but built in New Zealand in 1847. Fawkner’s ship had already been sold to Captain Sullivan in 1845 and was wrecked on the Richmond Pier in northern New South Wales early in 1847. “ - (further details are in NOTES: and FHMV documents) The hanging knee is significant for its association wreck of the Victorian Heritage Listed schooner Enterprise, VHR S238, being a New Zealand built but Australian owned coastal trader. The wreck was also significant for its association with indigenous hero Buckawall who saved the lives of the five crew on board.Portion of a ship's rib; a hanging knee, wooden, from the schooner Enterprise, 1847-1850. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, hanging knee, ship's knee, knee bracing timber, wooden ship building, carpentry, shipwright trade, buckawall, lady bay, enterprise, coastal steamer, ship's rib, indigenous hero, indigenous rescue -
