These medals were issued by the Town of Warrnambool in 1897 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria of England. Walter John Hickford, the Mayor Warrnambool at that time, has his name on the medal. Walter Hickford (1855-1928) was a Warrnambool businessman, setting up a shop in Liebig Street in 1880, supplying the paint materials for householders, contactors, painters and artists. He also carried out decorative work in private homes, businesses and churches. Hickford was active in civic life in Warrnambool, serving as a Councillor from 1890 to 1903 and he was Mayor from 1895 to 1897.These medals are of considerable importance as they were produced for the Town of Warrnambool in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. They have both a local and a wider national significance.,1These two circular bronze medals have profiles of Queen Victoria as a young woman and as a crowned monarch on the reverse and the Warrnambool Coat of Arms on the obverse. These items have no provenance but would be useful for display purposes. They are typical of the Victorian era displaying the romanticized beauty of children and young women. Flowers, gardens and pets were also displayed in this manner. This is all amply displayed in these two prints. Items were also quite readily and cheaply mass produced and thus available for many people to cheaply decorate their homes in the latest styles. Reproduction was possible and popular resulting in an enduring style which could be said to be eclectic The Victorian Era is named after the reigning monarch, of the second half of the 19th century Queen Victoria.This pair of prints has little provenance but being typical of the era will be useful for display. These are a matching pair of framed prints of a young boy and girl with a wide dark green border around the edge with a row of dots on the outside of the glass. The boy is holding posy of violets and the girl a fan. The edge is finished in a metal, possibly tin. Both are backed with heavy card. Gladys Holmes born 1897, Byaduk, eldest daughter of Joseph (Baker) and Agnes Homes. She married Alexander George Henderson in 1924. James Orford Critchlow born 26/08/1896. He enlisted in Casterton, Victoria on 26/08/1916. The Nominal AIF Roll indicates he was a clerk, single, son of James Critchlow and Cof E and a Gunner 33322. in 1924 he married Brice Violet Payne in Victoria. These labels were used in the business of E.B.Phillips, firstly when he as in partnership with Thomson in the late 1890s and later when he was the sole proprietor. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was a furniture maker and seller with a business at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. Samples of his furniture making are still in use in various parts of Australia. Philips built his home, ‘Heatherlie’, diagonally opposite his business and this site today is occupied by ‘Heatherlie’ flats for the elderly.These labels are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool furniture shop and factory of E.B.Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool a hundred or more years ago. .1 A sheet of cream-coloured paper with cream printing on an orange background and a space for an address. This kettle would have been used on top of a wood stove to boil water to make tea and other beverages and to use for other household purposes. It would have been a common household item in Australian homes from the beginning of European settlement up about the mid 20th century when wood stoves, although still in use in many country areas, were largely superseded by gas or electric stoves in most households. The kettle was made of durable material as it usually remained on the top of the stove for most of the day so that hot water was readily available. This kettle is retained as an example of an essential household item used in the past. It will be useful for display.This is a circular-shaped black iron kettle with a handle and a spout. The soldier in the photo is Charles Alfred KEDGE No.38512. Born in Bendigo, he enlisted on 8.11.16 aged 21 in the FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE Reinforcement 32. Embarked for England 26.11.17, embarked for France 17.7.18, KIA 16.8.18 at Tincourt, France. The photo was most likely taken in Croydon, South London at the home of Stephen Tully, the elder man sitting in the photo. Betty Tully is in front of him, Eileen in the white dress. John Thomas O'Bree enlisted in 20th reinforcements 22nd Batt AIF on 4.7.16. As a Stretcher Bearer he was awarded a "Military Medal on 4.10.18 during an attack at Estrees east of Peronne. He worked without rest for 24 hours bringing out wounded lying helpless under concentrated shell fire and machine guns. Hospitalised on 20.10.18 with Influenza. Discharged from the AIF on 27.10.19. This cabinet would have been made in the early 20th century for as office or home office furniture. It's neat brass lock and key gives the contents some basic security but could be easily tampered with. At some stage there were two additional divisions in the top row of pigeon holes, which would make fifteen compartments of equal size available. A cabinet such as this could be used to classify or sort items, for example, mail for different people, or categories of business papers such as bills, orders, receipts, pay book, bank book and so on.This cabinet represents the type of furniture available for offices and businesses in the early 20th century. It shows the hardware in use and the design detail such as the raised edges around the top of the cabinet.Cabinet or cupboard, stained dark brown and lacquered. Secure office storage with a lock and a key. Hinged, lift-up front panel door folds back against the lid. The inside is divided into thirteen compartments or pigeon holes. Main Street Greensborough 1963. The Scout Trading Post was sited just downhill from the Ashril Picture Theatre (in 2018 just downhill from the main Greensborough Plaza entrance (ie: about 55 Main Street). It's purpose was to raise funds for the local scout troupe that had their main hall at what, in 2018, would be 49 Hailes Street. The Trading Post only functioned for 12 months or so. Before that it was a home to the Mountford family and before them, the Slater family. These hand planes belonged to Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924). Born in Warrnambool, Ernest Phillips learned cabinet-making at the Warrnambool Box Works. In the late 1890s he established his own furniture store at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. By the early 20th century Phillips had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. He sold his products all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and the site of this home is now the complex of flats for senior citizens known as ‘Heatherlie’. These tools are of considerable interest as they belonged to Ernest Phillips, a prominent Warrnambool businessman in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are also a good example of the tools that were used 100 years ago. These are eight woodworking tools (hand planes) which belonged to Ernest Phillips of Warrnambool. They are rectangular pieces of smooth wood, some with an extra piece of wood at the lower edge and they all have a metal blade inserted through the wood at an angle. The blade protrudes at the base of the wood and when moved by hand along a surface it shapes the piece of wood being worked on by flattening and smoothing the rough surface and reducing the thickness. Smoking Caps are caps worn by men while smoking to stop the hair from smelling of smoke. They also kept the head warm. They were popular in the period 1840-1880, usually worn by gentlemen in the privacy of their home. This beautiful velvet smoking cap was worn by James Stirling who was the first settler to occupy land in the Marlo township. James stirling arrived in Victoria from Scotland in 1842.He took over Corringle Station (Ewing's Marsh). His son James stirling later established theMarlo Hotel. (Read more in Mary Gilbert’s book)Smoking accessories like this cap were popular through the mid-to-late nineteenth century to prevent the smoker's hair from absorbing the smell of tobacco smoke and were often worn with smoking jackets. The design, with its elaborate embroidery shows an aspect of Victorian material culture and reflects the nineteenth-century love of 'Oriental' style. . Part of the Uebergang Collection. Made by the firm of Triaca & Picchi. Camilo Triaca (1887-1972) was a sculptor born Tuscany, Italy. He arrived in Melbourne in 1909 and practised his craft in Richmond, Melbourne, before returning to Italy in 1914 to serve in the Italian Army. He returned to Melbourne in 1923 and continued to sculpt at his Richmond home before relocating to Fitzroy. A 1927 image of workers at his studio workshop taking a lunch break is in the Italian Historical Society collection (http://trove.nla.au/version172106091). Gilbert Innes Strachan (1888-1963) was educated in Glasgow and Bristol. He was a fluent lecturer and a stimulating and dogmatic teacher. Strachan was a founding member of RCOG (London) and served on its Council from 1929- 1955. He was one of the pioneers of the use of radium in treating uterine cancer, receiving a CBE in 1953 for his work in this area. Professor Strachan donated a coat of arms to the Australian RCOG during a visit (pre- 1963). Professor Strachan died at his home in Cathedral Road, London on December 9, 1963, following a short illness. He was 75.Framed black and white photograph. The 19th of May marks the anniversary of the turning of the first sod of the outfall sewer. In 1888, a Royal Commission into Melbourne’s public health led to an ambitious plan to construct a sewerage system of underground pipes, sewers and drains to carry sewage from homes and factories to a sewage treatment farm. The commission also supported the establishment of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), the authority that would build the sewerage system and manage Melbourne’s water supply. The dolls house and furniture was made by Heinrich August Ernst KOCH, who was interned at Orange NSW on the 6 June 1940. In 1941 was taken to Tatura VIC for an appeals tribunal hearing. He was released in 1943 to the Civil Alien Corp. The donor of the dolls house, John Smiles, is the grandson of Heinrich. Heinrich made the dolls house and furniture which he made for his daughters in Sydney NSW. It was sent to them whilst interned. The Wied family were settled in Palestine upon the beginning of WWII. Being of German nationality, they were considered a threat to security by Allied forces & were interned in temporary camps, before being shipped to Australia. In Australia they were interned in Camp 3, Tatura, a family camp for enemy nationals. Many of the internees came with few possessions. This item is just one of the handmade domestic items fashioned in the camp from largely scrap materials to give some home comforts in the initially barren surroundings of the camps, particularly to those interned with families and young children.
