The bluestone blocks were originally part of the bluestone lockup located behind the Police Residence and Courthouse. The stones at one stage formed an edging to a grass island at the intersection of Wattletree Road and Main Road and were painted white. When that intersection was reconstructed the stones were brought back to the former residence, occupied by the Shire Department of Parks and Environement where again they were used as edging for a newly constructed driveway put through from Main Road through where the original Police Station was sited. The stones now form part of the garden bed edging at the rear of the building. At some stage in 1989 a reproduction Police Station was built beside the residence as originally located, for the purpose of providing a lunch room for shire staff. With the centenary of World War 1, members of the Greensborough Historical Society researched the local lads who signed up to serve in the Great War. We have included Nurses from the area and those who served at Mont Park. The Greensborough and district soldiers listed in the World War I Project all had a connection with the area. Names have been taken from the Fallen Soldier’s Memorial, Greensborough Primary School Honour Board, the Greensborough District Honour Board housed at the RSL and by searching through Australian War Memorial and National Archives of Australia records. Some of our soldiers settled in and made great contributions to life in Greensborough after the War. Articles are also available on the GHS website. Maurice Fabbro and his mother Regina (wife of Guido) taken at home in Falkiner Street, Eltham. Regina passed away 21/03/1986 age 92 and is buried at Eltham Cemetery. This is a souvenir mug from Brauer College, Warrnambool. It is intended to be used by staff members from the school. Brauer College is in Caramut Road, Warrnambool and began as the Warrnambool Technical School which was established in Timor Street in 1913. The first Principal of the School, John King, served for 29 years. Additional buildings were constructed at the site over the ensuing years. In 1965 Warrnambool North Technical School was established at Albert Park (now merged with Warrnambool High School to become today’s Warrnambool College). In 1973 Warrnambool Technical School moved from the Timor Street site and re-located to Caramut Road. At the start of 1990 the school was renamed Brauer School, with the name taken from a prominent 20th century doctor in the town, Dr Alfred Brauer. Today the school is a secondary school offering a comprehensive range of subjects. The Procession of floats travelled from the Eltham Shopping Centre to Eltham Lower Park on Saturday 10th April as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations program. One of three photographs. The Infant Welfare Centre and BP service station can be seen in the background. Participants in the parade included the Eltham Film Society, Scout group, Eltham volunteer fire brigade, riders on horses, including Jock Read on his horse Shamus in front of the fire truck, and horse and carts. A cowley roller from the Melbourne Steam traction engine club and a McDonald roller represented Eltham Shire Council in the 19th and 20th centuries. Another float includes a bark hut with trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The trues heores our pioneers". One view shows Eltham Village under construction by H.M. Two vehicles including a Holden FC Special Sedan and ca 1958 Ford 100 truck are parked outside the Eltham Produce Store, Main Road, Eltham near Arthur Street. The brick building has signage to promote Tanox Paint and Permoglaze products. It also sold hay and grain. Operated by John McLean and Son. Situated just south from opposite Arthur Street, opposite the Eltham Village Shopping Centre. To the right was Garnet Burgess' second hand scrap metal and bottles, then the blacksmith shop, which was later taken over by Garnet with second hand furniture and next door to that was Ray Staff's grocery store. The store was demolished by 1963 for the BP Evergreen Service Station. Reproduced on p73 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Two horse drawn carriages outside Thomson's hotel in Kinglake. One is carrying passengers. On the left attached to the hotel is the Post Office. Mrs Thomson was the postmistress who in 1927 had held the position for 43 years (since 1884). The licence for the house was obtained in 1908 by Mr. Harry Thomson who by 1927 was the oldest permanent resident in Kinglake, having been there about 50 years. The hotel was destroyed by bushfire in February 1926 and a new hotel constructed on the site in 1927 by owner and licensee, Mr Frank Thomson, Harry’s son. Another identity at the hotel is Mr W. S. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. In 1851 Moses Thomas purchased 400 acres, including a half mile frontage to the Plenty River, at Mernda (then known as Morang) where he operated a farm, inn and other business. In 1865 Moses Thomas was appointed Engineer, Clerk and Collector for the Morang District Road Board. In this role he would have been responsible for overseeing the collection of local property rates and the maintenance and construction of local roads and drains. Road District Boards were one of the earliest forms of local government in Victoria. The Morang or Upper Plenty Road District was established in 1862. It covered part of what is today Mernda, Doreen, South Morang, Mill Park and Bundoora. In 1875, the area merged with the Whittlesea Road District to form the Shire of Whittlesea. Built by the celebrated shipbuilder Donald McKay, the Lightning was the first clipper built in the USA for a British firm. In 1862 on a return trip to Liverpool, it struck an uncharted rock in a rip. No water entered the vessel but on arrival a rock 6 feet long was found sticking through its timbers and beginning to work loose. Under Capt. 'Bully' Forbes, the Lightning made its first voyage to Australia in 77 days, and on its return voyage, made it in a record 64 days. The Lightning's entire life was spent on the Australian run carrying immigrants and cargo. It had the job of carrying free of charge immigrants and early consignments of introduced animals, including rabbits, which were sent to Thomas Austin of Barwon Park, Winchelsea. The wreck of ‘Lightning’ caused by fire was the worst shipping calamity in Geelong's history. On Tuesday, 4 October 1904, the first serious railway accident occurred on the Colac-Beech Forest line near Beech Forest. As no train was scheduled that day in the afternoon the crew decided to fetch some wood from down the line. They fired the boiler on locomotive 3A, attached two trucks to the locomotive and moved out of the station. When they arrived opposite the Ditchley Park Hotel they stopped the engine and adjourned to the bar for some refreshments before beginning work. While they were engaged some local children boarded the unattended engine, started it, panicked when it began moving and jumped out leaving in to speed away and tip on a curve in a cutting at Ditchley. The engine was severely damaged. However, its cause remained an Otways secret. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Erected in 1964, this stone cairn on Beach Road in Beaumaris marks the site of the wattle and daub cottage of James and Susannah Moysey. James, Susannah and their cousin Nicholas arrived in Victoria in 1844 and leased land on the cliff-top. They built a cottage, cleared the land for sheep and cattle and established vegetable gardens. Alexandra Fountain is a fountain in the Australian city of Bendigo, Victoria. It is regarded as one of the city's most prominent landmarks and monuments The fountain is located in Bendigo's Charing Cross area at the intersection of View Street and Pall Mall. Charing Cross effectively stands at the centre of the city and is one of Bendigo's busiest and most prominent intersections. The fountain stands opposite the main entrance of Rosalind Park. Alexandra Fountain was funded from the proceeds of the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition (1879), a £500 gift from George Lansell and a further £700 from the Sandhurst City Council (now the City of Greater Bendigo). The fountain was designed by William Vahland (1828–1915), a local architect responsible for some of the city's most prominent buildings. The fountain was named in honour of Alexandra, Princess of Wales. Trains with electric swing doors were often referred to as "dog boxes" or "doggies". They were manufactured at the Newport Workshops for the Victorian Railways. Swing Door cars had outward-opening doors. They were reasonably narrow, to ensure that two passing trains would not foul each other if doors were accidentally left open. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo. He advised that in order to access this point he had to scramble through a bit of rough undergrowth and beginnings of a car park. All near an open drain of some kind. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. George has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database. The International Poma at Falls Creek is a 1,219 metre long Pomalift. Pomalifts are named after their inventor, Polish born French manufacturer Jean Pomagalski. The first poma at Falls Creek was called the International because it serviced the area where a F.I.S. (Fédération Internationale de Ski) international race was held in 1960. It was built over the 1968-69 summer and was ready to operate in 1969, but due to a poor snow season, the 'Inter' didn't open to the public until 1970. The author of this article, Wolfgang Lert, was a pioneer of the ski industry in the USA. He was also editor of Western Skiing, forerunner to Ski Magazine, and a founding member of the International Skiing History Association. The company name on the back of this article is Dulmison (Aust) Pty Ltd. Photos of a Christmas Party for junior legatees and the Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group. It appears to have been sponsored by Brumby's bakeries. Location is not known. The children are being given gifts of sleeping bags by Santa Claus. In the first photo is Barbara Leach, a Legacy widow who became a Legatee. It is December 2001 as a similar photo was used for the 2001 Annual Report. The Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group is a dedicated group of young people aged between 18 and 35 years who themselves were Junior Legatees. They organise and conduct events throughout the year for young Junior Legatees. The photos were mounted in an album of events that happened for Junior Legatees in 2001, including a trip to the Aquarium, a trip to Luna Park, horse riding and fishing and a Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group Christmas party. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. The minutes of the Southport Widows' Club from 1988 to 1994. South Port was a widows' club was made up of widows from South Melbourne and Port Melbourne. At one stage it had been called Parks Legacy Club. The pages show that each meeting started with a minute silence in memory of their husbands. Also inside the front cover is The Legacy Widows' prayer that the widows would use. 'Let us be kind to one another and see in each other the best that we can find. There is so much sadness in the world and so many lives are dependant on us for brightness. Lord keep us brave. Help us to be kind. Amen. Gwen Gunn was the secretary or treasurer during some of this time and had minute book in her care. It was sent to Melbourne Legacy by Gwen's granddaughter Danni Moore in 2020.A record of the business practices for formal meetings in the 1980s and that Widows' Clubs provided a valuable purpose of meeting for the widows. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918.
