The Wesleyan Church, Denham Street in Lower Hawthorn, as the area was then called, was opened on 2 May 1886. The building was designed by Geelong architect William Henry Cleverdon and was built of brick in the Gothic style. Its dimensions were 55 x 33 ft and the façade incorporated a rose window and spire 50 ft high. A wooden vestry was placed to the rear. The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. It comprised a church seating 430 people, an assembly hall seating 300, kindergarten and primary classrooms. The three ministers present in the photograph were: Rev B. Wylie (Hamilton), Rev N. Chairman of the Congregational Union of Victoria 1869 - 1870, 1883 - 1884, 1895 - 1896, 1904 - 1905. Chairman of the Congregational Union of Australia and New Zealand 1904 - 1907. Rev Ira Menear (1901 - 1977). Born at Kapunda. Worked at the Kimba and Pt Neill mission stations on the west coast of South Australia before studying at the Brighton Training College and Adelaide University. Graduated B.A. Adelaide University 1928. After completing his theological training he was appointed to the Norwood Circuit before being appointed to take charge of the Methodist Inland Mission at Cloncurry. Minister at Crow's Nest, Gympie & Rockhampton 1936 - 1940. In 1940 he was accepted as a pilot officer in the RAAF, having been given leave of absence by the Methodist Conference. Menear enlisted RAAF air crew but was later transferred to the administrative staff. He rose from A.C.1 to the rank of Acting Wing Commander. He served in many parts of Australia, including the Darwin area. After the war Rev Menear took charge of the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Centre at Mount Osmond and later Mount Breckan, Victoria Harbour Rehabilitation Centre. Ernest Francis William Swan (1887 - 1981). Born Clifton Hill 1887. Educated at Wesley College and Queen's College at the University of Melbourne, where he was awarded an M.A. and B.D. Ordained into the Methodist Church in 1916.He served at Beechworth, Woomeland and Nhill before being appointed minister of the Piedmont Community Church in California in 1926. Whilst in the U.S. he graduated Th.D. at the Berkley Pacific School of Religion. In 1937 he returned to Australia as minister to Henley Beach S.A. Congregational Church. He was minister at Surrey Hills Wyclif Congregational Church 1940 - 1960. Married Mary Madsen in 1917. Died 31 October 1981.B & W head and shoulders studio portrait of Rev. Rev. Dr Andrew Melville McMaster, B.A., B.D., was born in 1922 at Mataura, New Zealand, where his father was the Presbyterian minister. The McMaster family came to Victoria in 1924. Rev A. M. McMaster entered the University of Melbourne in 1941, and after graduating Bachelor of Arts, studied at Ormond College, obtaining his Bachelor of Divinity in 1947. In 1947 he married Jean Langdon Buller, and in 1948 he was ordained and inducted into the Presbyterian Charge of Newtown, Tasmania. In 1951 he was called to Oatlands, Tasmania, where he served until 1956. From 1950 - 1952 he was Moderator of the Tasmanian Assembly. He was called to Swann Hill in 1956 and Croydon in 1962. From 1970 - 1972 he undertook post graduate studies at the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He was awarded a Doctorate of the Ministry in 1972. In December 1972 he was called to Kew Presbyterian Church. He was called to Noble Park in 1979 and to Wesley Church Shepparton in 1981. Hi retired in 1988 and died on 5th September 2009. Mr John P. Adam was a member of the Kew Presbyterian Church. He was born in Scotland and came to Australia at the age of 13 when his father was appointed Professor of Divinity at Ormond College. John Adam studied law and commenced practice in 1924. He served on the Council of the Law Institute of Victoria and was President in 1949. He gave a lifetime of service to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria and Australia. He was law agent of the Victorian Church for 20 years and was foundation Convenor of the Donald Cameron Homes Committee for elderly people. He was a member of the Council of Presbyterian Ladies' College for 20 years and Chairman from 1958 to 1965. He was also a member of the Ormond College Council. He was an active member of the Kew Presbyterian Church , serving on the Board of Management and Session for 47 years. John Adam was also Superintendent of the Sunday School for 19 years and a leader of the Young Men's Bible Class. He died aged 78 on 11 March 1973.B & W head and shoulders photograph of Mr John P. Professor McCaughey was born on 12 July 1914 and died on 25 March 2005. He came to Melbourne in 1953 as Professor of New Testament Studies in the Theological Hall at Ormond College. He became Master of Ormond College in 1959 a post he held for 21 years.
