This report lists the depths of water and the consistency of the seabed surrounding the Warrnambool Harbour in October 1929, The information, often referred to as 'soundings', was obtained by Jet Probing,. In earlier days a lead line was used to perform a similar task. The author of the document is unknown. Jet Probing is a method used for underwater archaeology, cable installation and coastal engineering. A jet probe is a machine that produces a strong jet of water that penetrates the layers of sediment on the seabed, determining their depth, thickness and consistency. It provides a survey of the seabed and can be used as an aid to engineering design and construction. The report mentions lining up with the wooden jetty, the end of the breakwater and the leading lights. It mentions sand, loose rock and rock. It tells of stopping work due to the water being too rough, the pipe choking, difficulty in connecting pipes, and pipe joint breaking as it tried to get through the sand, The report in the document is significant for its connection with the Warrnambool Harbour, Warrnambool Breakwater, Warrnambool Jetty and Lady Bay. The report gives figures for the depth and consistency of the water and seabed at a particular point in time and can be used to compart with similar figures taken at different times. Report covers three days of Jet Probings, with resulting figures and comments, for the depths of the surroundings of the Warrnambool Harbour. The report is in point form, with some underlining. Dates of recordings are 14-10-29, 15-10-29 and 16-10-29. (1929) The situation of the harbour had become a real problem by 1910 and required continuous dredging. In 1914 the Breakwater was extended but proved to be a failure because the work began to subside and by 1920 about two thirds of the harbour was silted up. Alterations made in the 1920's increased the silting problem. The soundings and Jet Probings were done after the Royal Commission of 1923, when the damaged stonework on the seaward side of the Warrnambool Breakwater, caused by the action of the sea, was the subject of enquiry. A conference between the Public Works, Water Commission and the Harbour Trust concluded that it would less costly to make repairs to prevent further damage rather than replaced the damage portion of the wall. A contract was raised in late 1924 to deposit rubble on the damaged side of the breakwater to minimise the Southern Ocean’s destructive action and work had started by August 1925. By the 1940's the harbour was no longer used. Objects. Clothes brush is oval in shape, with a polished wooden base, and black bristles. Shaped to a rounded point at each end. Bristles 2.5 cm long. Nine rows of bristles. Make-up brush bears Chinese writing on the handle, 23.5 cm long with 6.5 cm long white hairs forming the brush. Hairs are held in an ebony cup shape fitting, attached to the handle. An ebony top-knot completed with a red silk ribbon loop finishes the top of the handle.Hair comb: Tortoise shell, with three 7 cm long teeth, which unfortunately are broken from the fan-shaped decorative top. Destination roll that was used in Kew Depot trams, Melbourne, until the late 1960's. Roll on linen, with white letters on black background. Has stencilled words "STOP KEW" on bottom of roll, generally stencilled, though a few handwritten, miniature destination on rear to assist driver to locate the destination. Letters approx. 140 high. Roll consists of an unpainted section 140 long at top and 330 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 7.6m long. Souvenir Teaspoon featuring Ballarat tram No. 33 in a Square inset at the top of the tea spoon, contained within a plastic case. The teaspoon made by Perfection Plate, of the Galaxy style or type. The case has dark blue plastic base, with clear top, with a paper insert, with word "Perfection" and other details, including the name of the manufacturer "Hansen & Berry Ltd" with Auckland and Sydney photo numbers. On the rear of the case is the wording "Perfection". The teaspoon is silver plated, with the tram in a picture 18mm square. The teaspoon is marked "Galaxy" on the rear. Tea spoon is 112mm long x 25mm wide. Case is 125mm high, 32mm wide, by 16mm deep. Made late 1980's?. Demonstrates how advertising was done within W class tramcars - boxes of the driver's door and yields information about the Herald Newspaper.Poster advertising the Herald (Melbourne evening newspaper) newspaper. Thought to date from the late 1960's possibly when the trams were withdrawn. .1 - "Take The Herald on holiday. Keep in touch while you're out of touch." - featuring a lady reading the newspaper with the heading "Gas Rig Looks like its dying" while on the beach while a child plays nearby. Two copies held. .2 - "On The Herald has Jack Elliot" with a line sketch of Jack and horse races along the bottom. Set of four Black and White photograph of recovery equipment for tramcars. Two prints of each except - .4 .1 - steel beam shown in position in the saloon portion of a tram used to secure a bogie to the body of tram with steel section over transom and showing lifting hooks and securing or lifting bolts. Shown in position where the tramcar body floor was above that of the tramcar transom. .2 - ditto, but on an angle in a wide body tram where the top of the transom matched the top of the floor.
