Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria, opened the Auburn Heights Recreation Club in Barkers Road in December 1904. Two years later the greens were improved and a new croquet lawn established. In September 1906, a ceremony was held to open these and also the new pavilion designed by Harry Tompkins.Rare and important early photograph of the opening of a significant sports club in Melbourne1/4 plate glass negative (and accompanying print) of the crowd at the opening of the new greens and croquet lawn in 1906 at the Auburn Heights Recreation Club in Barkers Road, Kew. Spectators, including many women, watch the opening game of bowls on the redeveloped green. This was the home of Fred Lyons and family from c1920. Previously they had lived in Lorne Parade. Fred had a hansom cab at the rank at the Surrey Hills station from c1919 and stabled his horse in a paddock to the rear of this house. His son Arthur Lyons remained living here until 1990. The fox terrier was Fred's constant companion. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived in Lorne Parade before moving to 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived his whole life at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of the home of Fred Lyons and his family. This Belt was presented by the City of Essendon on occasion of presentation of the New Colours 25 November 1956Used to carry the Battalions colours Physical Description Green felt sash with red leather lining. Sash had gold trim and an inscribed silver plate on the face. The battalions battle honours are embroidered in spun gold thread on red silk banners in front of a lightly coloured wattle bush. Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the pin has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery.Small rectangular gold metal pin for five years service with a faceted pink stone inlay on the proper left side, the name and initials of Sarah Coventry in the central area and three flowers on the proper right side. This three-photograph group is the fifth in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The postcards are from his personal album, and many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Refer to Cat No 893 for his service details. Two medallions which were awarded to Australian World War 1 servicemen, T ENGLISH and C R C FERGUSSON, who had landed at Gallipoli in 1915. These medallions have been mounted on a burgundy felt backing and framed in a small gold coloured photo frame. Each is a circular bronze medallion surmounted by the Queen's crown. Obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey assisting a wounded man, a laurel wreath, the date '1915' and the word 'ANZAC'. Reverse depicts a map of Australia and New Zealand with the Southern Cross superimposed, fern fronds and the engraved name of the recipient. The Anzac Medallion was issued by the Australian government in 1967 to commemorate the 1965 50th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The medallion was issued to surviving veterans of the campaign or their next of kin.
