This medal was awarded at the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association Annual Show to Daniel Hourigan in 1877 for his yearling colt by 'Prince of the Isles'. The formation of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association arose out of a meeting at Woodford in 1853 and the first Show was held in Warrnambool in 1855 on a green bound by Fairy, Henna and Koroit Streets. It was held there until 1875 when it moved to the present Warrnambool Showgrounds in Koroit Street. At the 37th Annual Show in 1890 Warrnambool held its first Grand National Show, a title granted by the Chamber of Agriculture in Victoria. The Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association became known as the Warrnambool Agricultural Show in 1911. Daniel Hourigan was a farmer, road contractor, poundkeeper and auditor who lived in the Tower Hill area in the 19th century. This medal is of considerable interest as it is a memento of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association Annual Show in the 19th century. Annual Agricultural Shows have been an important feature of agricultural life in Victoria since the early days of European settlement and a feature of agricultural life in the Warrnambool district since the 1850s. The medal is also of great interest because it was awarded to Daniel Hourigan, a prominent settler in the Warrnambool district in the 19th century. .1 Circular silver disc with image of horse, bull, sheep, wheat sheaf and plough on the reverse with script around edge of obverse with awardees details engraved in the centre. Established to help further the welfare of blind people, the Narbethong Welfare Association sought to provide suitable accommodation. The photo shows the opening ceremony of Henham Township by Lord Stradbroke (the man on the right of the structure). A strip of land 2 kilometres long and half a kilometre wide had been approved as suitable for subdivision into 591 quarter acre blocks valued at 30-35 pounds each. Unfortunately it turned out to be a "fizzer". Trained as a cartographic draftsman within the mining industry, Margaret Picken is an artist who worked producing property illustrations for real estate agencies in eastern suburbs of Victoria from 1983-2005. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 4 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. Intersection of Main Road and Bridge Streets, Eltham. Before reconstruction of Main Road, this intersection had deep cutting embankments on all four corners. Roadworks and private development have levelled the land on the low side of the road. Granite Quarry opened at Cape Woolamai in 1891 by Chambers & Clutten of Melbourne, to supply stone for the facing of equitable buildings, Collins Street, Melbourne. Trolleys on rails brought stones to ship's side at low tide where a jib crane lifted them into the ship's hold. With high tide the ship was refloated.Granite Quarries Cape Woolamai on waters edge. Staff exchanger hoop - Leather Bakelite and wooden prop staff. The hoop held the 'Staff’ giving authority for a locomotive or rail vehicle permission to travel over a specified section of track. The display shows the hand held type used from person to person. Hand held staffs were exchanged at low speeds or stationary. Automatic staff exchangers were also in use when a vehicle was not required to travel at low speed to exchange the staffs and were used by express trains. To exchange the 'Staff’ from the platform or signal box to the locomotive driver, the hoop was held up in the air by the person, and collected by the Drivers arm. The reverse occurred when the staff was being given by the Driver. This nut roll tin was used in a period before 1959(when plastic containers started being used). It was a period when "home" cooking(desert & cakes) was the only method of having cakes and other pastry dishes in rural areas. The utensils available for this home cooking had to be strong and reliable and low maintenance. This nut roll can is very significant(in rural Australia) because it highlights a period in time when the majority of cakes and other pastry dishes were cooked in the family kitchen and not purchased from a shop. This was a period of self sufficiency especially in semi remote rural areas such as the Kiewa Valley. This was a time when cooking utensils were either made in Australia or imported from England or Europe. After World War II imports from the USA increased significantly and then followed by cheaper products from Asia.This cylindrical nut loaf tin(mild steel) has a removable lid and base. There are three retaining hooks which stop the spring steel "main body" from being condensed beyond the circumference of both top and bottom "lids" The tin is pliable enough to "open" up and allow the baked nut loaf to be removed.On the outside edge of each lid "NUT LOAF" and the opposite side "TIN"baking tins, kitchen utensils, tins
