Functional object - Run Number Plate, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Malvern M65, c1960s
Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a yellow background and the letter "M" and numbers "65"painted in black, to give a Run Number Plate for Malvern Depot No. 65. Painted with the same detail on either side of the plate. Used by Malvern Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. The tram has the destination of St Kilda Road. Three crewman are standing by the front of the tram - motorman or driver and two conductors. Two conductors were used as the seating arrangements had two full width cross bench seats as shown in the floor plan - see second image. This prevented the conductor collecting fares from all passengers unless they swung to the outside of the tram. Not known whether this was a full time arrangement or for peak periods only. Tram crews used them to contain their tickets when selling to the passengers.3674.1 - Sheet of leather, approx. 2mm thick, stained brown with four pockets formed on each side with another sheet of leather, stitched with dark brown cotton, on all sides to form pockets to hold eight blocks of tickets. Set of five items associated with a collision between Ballarat No. 37 and a truck loaded with baled hops on Thursday 15 April 1954. The tram was driven by David Kellett, conductor Herbert Ward. Probably published in The Courier, Friday 16 April 1954. Newspaper cuttings give details of the accident. Accident at the corner of South and Drummond Sts. Truck driver - Stanley Eaton; .1 -Newspaper cutting from The Courier with a photo of the front of the tram and the back of the overturned truck and the story - gives details of the crews, addresses and truck driver - note the story about the recovery of the tram. .2 - photos of the scene, titled "Sweeping up the wreckage" .3 - cutting from The Courier, "In Retrospect" - dated 25/10/2008 - see 50 years about the Ballarat Victorian Aero club preparing to replace an old tramcar with a new building. Newspaper reports and photographs of the collision between tram No. 37 and a semitrailer carrying bailed hops at the corner of Drummond Sth and South Streets the previous day. Refer to Reg Item 4045 for further details. The article gives details of the accident, the SEC crews involved (Dave Kellett and Herb Ward), and the truck driver. Also gives details of the recovery work. See item 6313 as well. Photograph is of two Essendon Depot crew members standing by a tram driver's door. The photo caption is "?? Driver ? Hadara and conductor Harry Nikolaou on the tram that unloaded 90 passengers to take an unconscious pregnant woman on an express trip to hospital." Photo is mid 1970's based on the conductor's uniform and the tram being fitted with markers lights taken at Flinders and Elizabeth St with Fliinders St station in the background. Photograph - W class 307 and crew, 1924-1928
Photograph shows W class 307 standing on slightly curved track displaying destination "Victoria Bridge" and no route number box attached. The uniformed motorman and conductor stand on the roadway next to the front driver's cab where the trolley pole has been tied down. The conductor wears his coin bag and the driver is holding the tram's key and air brake handle. An elderly male passenger with coat stands at the drop-centre doorway and other passengers are inside. The car body of W 307 was built by Holden Motor Body Builders in South Australia in 1924 as part of a large contract to build W class trams. Victoria Bridge was the termini of both the Collins Street and Victoria Parade cable tram that closed in 1929 and the Mont Albert electric tram from Union Road, via Whitehorse Road and Kew Junction. Perhaps this photograph is of the Mont Albert terminus although the curved track suggests otherwise.Yields information about early W class tramcars . The postcard photograph shows PMTT No. 23 a Maximum Traction bogie, straight sill combination with drop end at the Malvern Burke Road terminus, c1916. See page 60 of Destination City 5th edition for details of the tram. Purchased by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust during 1916, in 1920 absorbed by the MMTB and classed "O". They were sold to Adelaide in 1927. There is a large "1" in the front window, indicating the route number and the destination of Burke Road.
