Also gives information about the Councils view of the level crossing itself.Photocopy, of an item in the Ballarat Courier, 5/5/1951 titled "Train Astride Crossing Trams Delayed Hour", following the delay in the crossing when a rail broke under a goods train. Held up trams and others for about an hour and half. Notes the SEC used a replacement bus service. Gave the City of Ballaarat space to complain about the crossing and its need to be replaced. Details history of Bendigo tramways, its tramcars and the involvement of the various operators. Has maps and photographs. Has been covered with a plastic covering material with a typed note "Property of the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society, Not transferable to any person" underlined in red ink and position underneath the plastic covering. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "CARLTON ST. CAR SHED LOOP." stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The part with the words "CAR SHED LOOP" appears to have been ground down and a previous location name taken out and replaced. Demonstrates how ESCo managed Weekly tickets during the late 1920's and yields information about the way the system was arranged. The source of the ticket, NSW tramways is significant in that it was obtained by them as a sample.One penny or 1d paper ticket, ESCo, Ballarat Tramways, printed on fawn paper, No. D3339. Ticket has up and down directions, conditions of use, not issued on public holidays, special cars or railway picnic days. Front of the ticket (with the number), has it available for: Bridge and Drummond St Sturt St and Macarthur St Macarthur St (Junction Wendouree Parade and Gardens) On the rear - the ticket is made available for use by a child in the following: Orphanage and Grenville St Mt Pleasant and Grenville St Bridge St and Service St {stop along Sturt St West} Bridge St and Macarthur (via Fraser St) {Alan Bradley advised 29/6/14 by email, former name of Ripon St North once it crossed over Mair St heading north. - see note below} Sturt St and Gregory St (via Lydiard) Hello Warren, The View Point line leaves Sturt St and turns into Ripon St. It crosses Mair St, does a dogleg, and went into Fraser St. then past the Powerhouse. The descriptions of the horse tram lines to be constructed by the BTCo, and the electric lines to be constructed by the ESCo, specify that the lines run along Ripon and Fraser Sts. Functional Object - Section Staff, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), "Urquhart St Loop to Grey St Loop"
Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "URQUHART ST LOOP TO GREY ST LOOP " stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. ... association with tram crews and the ticket / revenue collection system ...The box used by SEC Ballarat and Bendigo tram crews for holding their ticket outfits and making returns to the Revenue Clerks. Fitted with a padlock - see Reg. Item 3673. .Issued to a crew member with Traffic No. 62 - Roy Courtney. Each crew member was issued with a series of tins, A, B, and C which allowed for the various days and weekends to enable Revenue Clerks to accept returns and restock the tins with new tickets etc. Known to crews as "Two bottle boxes" - could fit two bottles of ale into them. The actual manufacturer is not known - could have been SEC workshops. See item 8917 for an MMTB tin.Has a strong association with tram crews and the ticket / revenue collection system.
