The book is an account of the Charles TROEDEL & Co and their lithograph production. The author, Amanda SCARDAMAGLIA, mentioned the company in a footnote to her PhD thesis. From the interest came her first book 'From Stone to Print'. this book, 'Printed on Stone', covers the history of lithography as well as that of Charles, company from 1863 to 2013. In 1887 Edward COOPER joined the business & in 1890 he and Charles formed a partnership until the 1890's depression forced the temporary closure of the business in 1895. The book is lavishly illustrated with examples of the work.Hard cover book of 234 pages with its spine bound in red. Born in Scotland, Allan Mann studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and worked in many tertiary institutions in Great Britain and Australia. Allan Mann arrived in Australia in 1987, lecturing at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, Queensland, then the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education Wagga Wagga, NSW, in 1981. He returned to the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, Scotland between 1984 and 1985. Allan Mann was appointed to the University of Ballarat (then Ballarat College of Advanced Education) in 1987. He retired as an Associate Professor of the University of Ballarat Arts Academy in 2010.Black, hard-covered artist's book produced in a limited edition of 22 (of which this one is number number 6). British army officer Major Charles Newman was an early settler on the Yarra River at Templestowe after serving in India in the East India Company. Later be married and moved to Tasmania, farming at Black Brush near Pontville. In 1835 he came to the Port Phillip District and explored the Yarra River, returning with his family. David Crockett and Hazel Poulter researched, respectively, Charles Newman and the Templestowe area, identifying the Newman house, Pontville, on the Yarra banks.
