Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, (date unknown), titled "Early bid for cable trams" noting that about 100 years ago, Ballarat's civic fathers were keen to give the city a cable tramway. Found that cable too expensive and horse tramway developed instead. Gave details of horse tram systems, costs and operations. Part of a Section of the newspaper titled "Enter the Past", looking for local history stories. Gives the Couriers address. Item not dated, but c1985. Newspaper Clipping - from The Argus Monday 15/3/1937, titled "Six Trams Damaged with Road Metal", about the damage caused at the time of the closure of the South Melbourne and Port Melbourne cable tram services - by souvenir hunters and people at the Port Melbourne depot who through road metal (stones) at the trams as they came into the depot. The timeline gives the date of closure as Saturday 13/3/1937. Notes one of the Gripmen was a Mr. J. Armstrong. Bell Chairman of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board on his overseas trip March - October 1938". Dated 31/1/1939. He was accompanied by Mr. R. A. Spencer the Board Secretary. Wooden Wax Sealing stamp - wood handle with a small brass stamp with the letters "R.Ty." and "I" or "1" underneath. See e-mail message from Andrew Cook dated 3-2-2019, Andrew advised "That is a wax seal (see attached image of a modern day one). You can still buy them to this day. I'm only guessing, but maybe the seal came from one of Melbourne's cable tram depots? 'R' could possibly stand for 'Richmond' or maybe 'Revenue'. Negative (120) of the intersection of Moreland Road and Sydney Road, Brunswick, during the 1920's. In the view is a cable tram set shunting. A tramway employee and two boys at the front of the grip car seem to be manipulating something. Saloon car is No. 183 with the conductor pushing the car. The grip car has the destination of Brunswick and the saloon Flinders St? Note the two steel tramway poles and overhead for the North Coburg electric tram service from Moreland Rod into Sydney Road. In the background is the Moreland Hotel, Clarkson chemist and the Commercial Bank of Australia. An low resolution A4 laminated was received with the negatives. Electronic or battery clock mounted in a former Melbourne cable tram era wood block, cut from an former Melbourne tramway paving red gum block with one of the faces polished up The clock is inset into the wooden block, plastic, Perspex front. The clock made by "SHONTEK" Small N size battery - battery has been removed from the item. The block has a label on the underside - "Hand crafted in Australia by William Carroll", Arraign, Victoria, Phone 03 5622 3644. Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D406. A heavy nickel or chrome plated steel ticket or fare strip canceling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made by or for the Melbourne Cable Tram Operator and then reportedly subsequently used on ESCo No. 12. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, consisting of frame, bell, striker, bell pull section, one nuts and two pins.
