Built after World War 1, the monument originally stood on the corner of Whitehorse & Railway Roads before being moved to Morton Park on 20th April 1969. The memorial was erected in memory of those from the district who were killed during WW1. Those who lost their lives in WW2 were added on the other side of the memorial as well as plaques commemorating later conflicts. The monument is a grey granite obelisk on a single stepped bluestone base on a concrete platform.Coloured photograph of a war memorial surrounded by flower gardens. The Ballarat School of Mines was founded in 1870. The book covers the first 112 years of the School's history. The school offered courses in engineering, geology, education, business studies, wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. The School of Mines underwent some name changes and in the 1980s became affiliated with The University of Melbourne; it was subsumed into the University of Ballarat that (created by an act of parliament in 1994). Frank Sheehan was the state member for Ballarat South, serving from 1982-1992. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area.
