Object. Made of bone-possibly whale bone. The two sections have a ''wheel-like'' structure at their heart, held in place by two small metal pins. This enables the two sections to open, and ''stretch the fingers of the gloves. Accessory - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: LADIES WALKING CANE, 1920's
Object. Finely tapered wooden cane- .7 cm diameter at base and .9 cm at base of metal handle. The rounded top, forming a handle is metal and while some numbers are visible,I do not think that there is a hallmark to indicate silver No 935 and some indistinguishable letters. The metal extends around the handle and 10.5 cm down the cane. A 2.5 cm wide ''bracelet'' of a different metal encircles the cane, over the top of the darker metal. The cane has a covering of black paint, which is showing wear and tear. The cane has a 2.7 cm metal tip-possibly brass. Accessory - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: LADIES WALKING CANE - TWO EXTRA HANDLES, 1920's
Object. (a) A circular metal disk, slightly convex with six tiny crosses spaced around the outer rim. Shaped like a funnel at the rear, the handle extends into a 16 cm stem which would fit over the walking cane. Eight raised circles decorate the stem, giving a .8 cm decorative ridge. Four circles impressed below the lower edge. A hallmark is impressed below these circles, xo.... with remainder unreadable. (b) Circular rounded top, decorated with concentric small circles, raised slightly, and each centred with a tiny blue gemstone. A larger Royal Blue, circular raised gem stone is at the centre. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BABY SHOES, Late 1800's
Clothing. Tiny kid(?) leather soles - just 11 cms long, with burgandy silk fabric uppers- having a centre front seam, and a centre back seam. These seams are machine stitched and then top stitched on both sides of the seam, with tiny machine stitches. A 'turn-back' of burgandy, fake-fur trims around the ankle high boots and two burgandy silk ribbon bows, fasten the boot at the outer ankle. Inners of the boots are lined with a canvas-like fabric. Accessory - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: LADIES UMBRELLA, Early 1900's
Object. Wooden frame and handle, metal mechanism and spokes, line fabric covering. Wooden handle is 4 cms in diameter and 9 cm long. An eyelet through the handle may once have a carrying loop. The handle has a polished wood finish, and is decorated with painted leaves. The top peak of the umbrella is also polished wood, 3.5 cm long, 2 cm in diameter. Ephemera - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CIRCULAR CANE FAN, 1920-30's
Object. Circular in shape and 22 cms in diameter. The fan has a bamboo handle 26.5 cms long. Long strands of woven cane have been machine stitched into a circular shape, with the outside round in green dyed cane. (twenty rows of woven can make up the fan). Domestic Object - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: PALM-FROND DIAMOND SHAPED FAN, 1920's
Object. Woven palm - frond handle and 'spine'. Strips of palm-frond have then been split from the fronds, and woven in a 'basket' effect, with slightly wider - 1 cm, at the base of the fan shape, tapering to .5 cm at the top. Lower section at the centre. A second 5 cm straight shape section steps up to a top peak, 4 cm high. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CIRCULAR BROCADE AND BEADED EVENING BAG, Late 1800's
Clothing. Circular, on a gold metal frame, with a gold (badly tarnished) brass chain handle. A small beaded brass clasp closes the bag. Three small .5 cm pearls sit on top of the clasp, one in the centre of the beaded clasp, and two other groups of three pearls on top of the frame, with tiny white, pink and green beads - possibly silk brocade, has an all-over floral design in cream, pink, and dull green, on a cream background. The bag is lined with cream satin and has a small internal side pocket. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: STRAW ''PILL-BOX'' HAT WITH FEATHER AND BERRY TRIM, Early 1900's
Clothing. Oval in shape, 4 cms deep at the back, and slightly flattened to 2 cms deep at the front. Deep brown straw on the outside, with a slight sheen, deep blue straw on the inside with a glossy finish. A fine elastic is attached at each side, to hold the hat in place. A band of stiffening lines the inside of the back, to hold the shape. Attached to the front of the hat is a 51 cm long, deep brown ostrich feather. A cluster of seven deep red (one loose) glass bead 'berries' and a scrunch of dark red velvet, hold the feather in place. The feather passes over the top of the pill box and extends an extended 30 cms over the back edge, in a sweeping, gracious curve.costume accessories, female, straw pill box hat with feather -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: LADIES FULL LENGTH BLACK SKIRT-DAMAGED, Late 1900's
Clothing. This garment has been severely damaged - the waistband has been removed, and a 45 cm diameter circle has been cut from the polished cotton lining. There is also fabric damage adjacent to the internal side pocket seam, velvet binding at hem, stiffened linen lines the inside at the hemline - 20 cm deep, and a narrow binding of black velvet encircles the lower hemline. While the waistband has been partly removed, the original two metal hooks, and three metal eyes are still in place. This garment is severely damaged, but it does still give insight into the inner construction of the garment. Ten ''gores'' or sections make up the circle of this skirt.costume, female, full length black skirt -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BLACK SKIRT/TULLE/ VELVET UNDER-SKIRT OR PETTICOAT, 1890's
Clothing. This petticoat is multi-layered with one layer of taffeta at the hemline, with black velvet, the top edge of which is scalloped-55 cms deep, and finished at the top edge - the scalloped edge, with a cotton braid 2mm deep. Two layers of tulle, over the taffeta, are gathered into a 1 cm wide waistband, which fastens with a metal hook, but no loop is visible. A 23 cm long plackett has a metal press-stud closure. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BLACK VELVET LONG SLEEVED JACKET, Late 1800's
Clothing. Twelve shaped panels form the body of the jacket, which is dramatically ''shaped in'' at the waistline, and flared out toward the hipline. Four black fabric covered buttons form the closure, with hand-stitched button holes, all ''hidden away'' under an overlay of the beaded velvet, of which the jacket is made. The long sleeves, narrow at the elbow, flair out to an embroidered and beaded cuff, 35 cm in circumference. Sleeves are gathered at the shoulderline, giving fullness, and featuring an elaborate ribbon, cord, and beaded embroidery. The embroidery is repeated around the revere collar, and on the right-hand side of the bodice, and the full length of the back of the garment, and around the hemline, and also trims the opening edge of the left-front bodice. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BLACK SILK BONED BODICE WITH LACE,BEAD, SEQUIN AND VELVET TRIM
Clothing. Rounded neckline at the back, deeply scooped at front. Back fastens with 12 metal hooks and eyes. Back hemline is slightly shirred to nip in the 67 cm waistline, which is peaked at the cntre front. ''Leg-o-mutton'' type sleeves are gathered at the shoulder, and above the elbow, and finished with an 8 cm band of beading and sequin embroidery and a 4.5 cm black silk frill, and a frill of black lace, with an exquisite fruit and floral woven pattern. The neckline is trimmed with a deep lace and sequined silk overlay. Three velvet ''rosettes'' trim the centre front of the overlay. Late 1800'sClothing. Squared neckline, long beaded sleeves, finished with a 6 cm ribbon edged frill. Sleeves are beaded in bow motifs, which are repeated on the back and front panels of the bodice. Lower edge has a peak at centre front, and is finished with a 3 cm black velvet band. Bodice is lined with black polished cotton. Front opening is fastened with ten metal hooks and eyes - opening alternately from left to right. A 3 cm wide strong cotton tape is stitched to the centre back of the bodice, passing around the waist, and fastening at centre front with one metal hook and eye. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CREAM LACE; FOUR FRILL LAYERED GARMENT TRIM, Early 1900's
Clothing. Beautiful cream, floral, lace - probably linen, 10 cms deep. Each of the four layers of floral lace is overlapping a 3 cm wide, permanently pleated, band of cream silk, which is edged with a narrow 5 mm band of black velvet. The linen lace has a scalloped lower edge alternating five circles .8 cm diameter and four circles 1.2 cm - this edging forms the scalloped effect. Flowing scrolls and leaves fill in between the flowers. Presumably this four frill flounce has been removed from another garment to be recycled.costume, female, four frill layered garment trim -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CREAM SILK AND TULLE VICTORIAN EMBROIDERED BODICE, Layte 1800's - early 1900
Clothing. Beautiful deep cream silk bodice, fully lined with cream tulle/net. Elbow length sleeves have a semi-circle of embroidered silk, and an embroidered tulle ''flounce'', edged with cream cord - 17 cms long. The bodice has seven pin-tucks, angled from the shoulder to the waistline on each side of the front and back. Between the pin-tucks at centre front panel is an extensive cream silk, floral embroidery. A rounded neckline at front and back, is in-filled with embroidered tulle - small 1 cm diameter flowers, in a 3 cm diameter circle, defined by 12 small (3mm) embroidered circles. The tulle infill extends to a 7 cm high stand-up collar-supported by seven plastic ''bones''. The collar also features the same, circular, floral embroidery, and is also edged at the throat with cream cording. The bodice while in good condition, has been cut at the hemline, and a 10.5 cm strip of fabric has been added but unfinished. 18 metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops fasten the back of the bodice. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: FULL LENGTH LONG SLEEVED, BLACK BEADED DRESS, Late 1800's
Clothing. High stand-up embroidered net collar-close fitting to the neck, and fastening at the back with now 4 metal hooks and loops (one hook missing) and edged at top and bottom with tiny black beads. Five metal ''curved wires'' 7 cm long, are spaced around the up right ''collar'' (to hold in place). The embroidered net forms a V shaped panel at the centre front, and has 15 silk covered oval buttons .8 cm long, from throat to lower bodice. This panel is bordered by embroidered and beaded braid, 7 cm wide and giving a cross-over effect. Cotton tape inside waist 66 cm long fastens with two metal hooks and eyes.Under this lace cross-over, the bodice is shirred and pleated, to give fullness for movement. Pleats are ''caught-in'' at the waistline. An elbow length over-lay of sheer silk fabric, edged with the beaded braid. The sleeves are silk fabric to the elbow, and then narrow in to a three hook plackett at the wrist. This lower sleeve with a 2.5 cm lace frill, and a spotted tulle fabric, and ''dotted'' at the upper side with a double row of tiny black beads. Clothing. Curved ''cup-shape'' bodice, unlined, shirred slightly at the centre, and measuring 28 cm deep, from shoulder strap to midriff. A V shaped panel is inserted into the back bodice - 37 cm x 13.5 cm at the top to give a filled effect. Eight covered buttons and loops form the closure at the top of this panel (one button missing). Clothing. Beautiful cream lace in a deep curve (which possibly may have been the front or back) extending over the shoulders, into two long peaks- possibly a deep, V neckline. The lace has diamond shapes, woven in groups of four in a larger diamond shape, and also in a Maltese Cross type grouping. These appear to be ''fillers'' between circular shapes, 6 cm in diameter, of four-petalled flowers''. The outer edge has a scalloped effect, each with a Maltese Cross'' type filler. Object. Circular crocheted lace medallions - 16.5 cm in the front, 7 medallions in the back, one of which at the top of the back would possibly fold over the top if required. Eighteen small (1.75 cm) diameter, double petalled floral motifs form the 'handle'.
