Size of box is 6cm x 4cm In 1936, young Eric Child (1910-1995) met, and squired around London's jazz night-spots, Lucille Wilson a dancer in Lew Leslie's Blackbirds stage production at the Gaiety Theatre. Although Lucille knew a few famous bandleaders she, at that time, had never heard of Louis Armstrong, THE King of jazz, according to Eric. Later, in a letter to Eric in late 1942, Lucille wrote that she had met his King - and had become his fourth wife on 7th October 1942. She had finally worked with Louis at the new Cotton Club in Harlem in 1939 where she was in the chorus line using the stage name Brown Sugar. The long platonic friendship with Lucille remained and Eric and his wife Angela (1919-2001) welcomed her and the King in Brisbane on Louis' first visit to Australia in April 1956, and on all subsequent visits here. At a dinner at the Child's Sydney home Lucille presented Angela with one of Louis' famous stage handkerchiefs, signed by the All Stars, and a her own brooch and earrings, which Angela had quite innocently admired. Following Eric's death in 1995, Angela promised the Louis handkerchief to Bill Haesler and the brooch and earrings to Jess Haesler when she died. Rather than keeping these unique items private, the Haeslers donated them, in Angela's memory to the Victorian Jazz Archive. Copies of newsletters to Legacy widows in 1960s. There were usually 4 editions per year (February, May, July and November - plus two special one pages editions in October and November 1961). Newsletters include a notice from the Senior Widows Club coordinator F R G Strickland and information about events and meetings. The editor was Mrs B E Shephard. There were so many widows that the meetings were spread over three groups - yellow, green and red - each meeting on a different Wednesday of the month at Legacy House. On the free Wednesday a Card party was open to all widows and their friends to play cards (entry fee of 1/-). Some months all groups met on the same day and the meeting had to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall to accomodate the numbers. November's meeting as a picnic in the Botanical Gardens and January the widows met in Fitzroy Gardens. In November there were calls for nominations for the committee members for the following year. Committee comprised of a President, 2 Vice presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Assistant Secretary and 14 members of the committee. The first edition in the new format was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 1D a copy. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. Five Australian Christmas Carols was written by John Wheeler and music by William G James. William James came from Ballarat and John Wheeler was from Colac. James was a concert pianist who graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium. He went to London and played the Proms and wrote a series of Australian themed songs for Dame Nellie Melba. He became the first Federal director of Music for the ABC until 1957. It was at the ABC that he met Wheeler a staff writer who wrote verse and songs. These five carols which have a distinct Australian flavor, were written between 1848 and 1957.While this collection has no direct link to Warrnambool, the works contained in the collection Five Australian Christmas Carols would have social significance as the carols would be familiar to a number of people. Barbara Seidel of Eltham has provided a copy of a photo of a group known as the "Eltham Campers" which included some of her relatives. Jock Read and Garnie Burges remember this group from the 1920's. They used to camp on the old pound site at Eltham Lower Park. They met in North Fitzroy and every A.N.A. weekend they cam to Eltham to camp. They had big tents and set up a stage on backs of their wagons or lorries. A concert was held on the Sunday night for local people to attend. They met every third Wednesday at Legacy House. The photo was featured in the November 1991 issue of The Answer. In the 1990s Legacy was supported by generous donations from Fergusson Plarre Bakehouse with cakes often donated for the annual fete. This cake could have been donated. Story by Cdr Ashley Brown, officer of the watch about an attack by Japanese aircraft on the HMAS Austrlia May 7, 1942. Also an account of an accidental bombing of the ship by the United States Airforce. It was part of a series of articles called 'The War I saw' published in the Herald Sun newspaper. Date unknown. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00830-00837). So it is assumed that Cdr Ashley-Brown was approached to speak at a Legacy function. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. The Warrnambool Co-operative had its beginnings as the Allansford Artificial Breeders Co-operative in the 1960's. In the 1970s they opened a retail store in Timor Street which had a strong rural and farming base which gradually expanded to become the largest trading department store in the district. By the late 1990's they had 8000 members and employed 84 full time and 120 casual staff. It met a sorry end in the 2000's.This plaque commemorates the opening of the Rural store which consolidated the large rural aspect of the business. It opened up the site from Merri Street at the back of the Timor Street building trading in all agricultural products, , chemicals and fuels.A link to one of Warrnambool's largest stores of the latter part of the 20th century and as such it has historical and social significance. This is an album used as a scrapbook to insert memorabilia of the 1927 opening of Parliament House in Canberra. The compiler of the scrapbook is unknown. The scrapbook includes small sepia-coloured photographs, a stamp, copies of photographs of the Duke and Duchess of York and a printed program of the 1927 Dedication of the Houses of Parliament. The photographs include the opening of Parliament House in 1927, the N.S.W. Mounted Police, notable military men of the time, the Melbourne escort for the Duke and Duchess of York procession and some views of Canberra. The states of Australia were created in 1901 with the establishment of Federation and the Australian Parliament met at Melbourne from 1901 to 1927 when the Australian Capital Territory was created and the first Australian Parliament House was built. This album is of minor significance as the material concerns mostly the opening of Canberra’s Parliament House in 1927, a national event. One photograph, that of C.A. Rogers, has local significance. Caroline Elizabeth Newcomb (1812 - 1874) woman squatter. Born in London and emigrated to Hobart Town in 1833. She went to Port Phillip in 1836 as governess to the children of John Batman. She met Anne Drysdale in Geelong and they set up a farming partnership. Caroline Newcomb joined the Wesleyan Methodist Society in 1839 and became the first secretary of the Methodist Church at Drysdale, founded in 1849. After Anne's death in in 1853 she continued to run the Coryule property. On 27 November 1861 she married Wesleyan minister the Rev James Davy Dodgson. She died at Brunswick on 3 October 1874. The Mayor's room was traditionally a private space in which the Mayor met with visitors and official guests. The signatures in this Visitor's Book reflect the breadth of community members who were received by Mayor's throughout the 20th century. From local people to overseas dignitaries their signatures are recorded for prosperity as evidence of their visit to Bendigo. Signatures include the Duchess and Duke of York (Later the King and Queen of England) who visited on the 28th April 1927 as part of their national visit which coincided with the opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Royals Prince Charles and Lady Diana signed the book on the April 15th, 1983 and Prime Minister John Howard and Members of Cabinet in 1998. The original Tawonga District Hospital was situated at the corner of Ryder's Lane and Kiewa Valley Highway. The construction was initiated by the Hospital and Charities Commission with considerable assistance from the State Electricity Commission.The building was transported from Bonegilla where it was originally a part of the Bonegilla Military Hospital. It started with 12 beds and eventually increased to a total of 35 beds. "Add ons" provided theatre, offices, stores and Nurses Home. It was officially opened on 24th September, 1949. Up until this time, any person requiring hospitalisation had to travel to Yackandandah. This photograph is of the theatre and there was no anaesthetic or recovery rooms. While rather primitive by todays standard, it met the demands of the construction days as well as that of the Kiewa Valley community. Primarily working across painting and digital art, Lazzaro’s artworks are characterised by figures of wrestlers, vampires, zombies, toys and subjects from imaginary worlds. Often using gouache, acrylic and paint pen, Lazzaro’s imagery blends sinister interpretations with a quirky sense of humour. Lazzarro’s works usually depict historical figures, pop-culture icons or people he has met or seen. This work depicts two women holding hands. Lazzaro has been a regular studio artist at Arts Project Australia since 2004.
