There was no electricity so kerosene lamps were used. The women ran social evenings, concerts, lanternslide evenings and bazaars to raise funds. The Red Cross used the vestry for their meetings, and the Education Department hired the church for school classes until 1890 when a school was finally erected.Coloured photograph of the original Mitcham Anglican Church in Edward street, with the latest church building in the background - 2012christ church anglican church, mitcham, edward street, whitehorse historical overlay -

Then, with the invention of the printing press, designs such as sentimental or religious mottos were pre-printed on the card and a Victorian craze began as it provided a simpler and cheaper method of embroidering for the masses compared to the previously far more expensive linen embroidery. Over the following decades embroidering of punched-card grew enormously in popularity and a variety of articles from Christmas decorations to birthday cards, and in this case a Neele case to celebrate Queen Victoria's golden Jubilee in 1887. The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. It includes photos of junior legatees and names and addresses used to contact past residents about the reunions held each year. Also newspaper clippings about significant events for the residents. Examples include when the junior legatees graduated from their courses, such as pharmacy or nursing. Also when girls had married and had children. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo.. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01834. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. It was at 1245 Burke Road Kew (corner of Cotham Rd). It was purchased by Red Cross in 1945 who refurbished it and leased it back to Legacy for as long as it was required as a residence for junior legatees. It was handed back to Red Cross in 1981.A record of life at Stanhope that was compiled during the years it was operating.
