The Officer in Uniform was Major Phil Chapman OC of 15th Transport Sqd based in Bendigo in the old Passchendaele Barracks depot in Mollison Street where the Battle Honour board was held. The other in civilian clothes is Cliff Richards who was Junior Vice President of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch at the time. The photo relates to the Board being donated to the Bendigo RSL Museum in the SMI building in January 1999. The 38th Battalion AIF was known as Bendigo's own, raised in Bendigo in 1916 for service in the Great War. Due to its size it was placed high up in what was the Billiard Room in the Museum. After a major renovation to the BDRSL Inc Club in Havilah Rd in 2013 it was then placed over the foyer front entrance. Due to another up grade it was placed in storage for awhile and is now on display in the rear foyer patrons entrance. This oil painting by Bret Belot was an initiative of his to put something on canvas to celebrate the centenary of ANZAC in 2015. The images depicted on the painting are mostly from the collection of the Bendigo Military Museum in the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo. Some of the figures are Brothers Jack Grinton & Bert Grinton DCM, Bill Durward 38th Bn, the Wright Brothers, Albert Jacka VC, MC and Howard, Poliness & DeAraugo who volunteered to go with Jacka when he won the VC, 38th BN men in Dog Trench, graves of 38th Bn soldiers, a letter written home about the Armentieres raid in 1917 by Robert Suggett 38th Bn. The painting was first unveiled at the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc pre ANZAC Day 2015. These Constitutions dated 14.11.1952 with the name's , "A.V. Palmer - President" (Bendigo RSL) "N.D. Wilson - President - Vic Branch R.S.S.A.I.L.A". The small booklets were headed "Rules of the Bendigo Returned Servicemen's Club - 1956" As far back as 1950 there was discussion within the Sub Branch re a Club in suitable premises. A property was purchased being 11 McKenzie Street Bendigo with the title dated 9.2.1951, the facility opened on 1.6.1951 but without a Liqueur Licence. Years followed with a failure to be granted one. Finally the facility was sold to Bendigo Legacy and they occupied the building on 7.6.1959 which became known as "Legacy House". 1. The Tarnagulla Presbyterian church was built in late 1863 at an estimated cost of 650 pounds plus bricks, and opened for services June 19th 1864. The first minister was Rev. Hamilton. A Sabbath School also opened at this time. The success of gold mining in the area and the resultant population fluctuations, had an impact on the church and in 1866 it was only operating on an occasional basis. It closed in the late 1870's, reopening in 1882 as a mission station. In 1912, repairs and improvements valued at 150 pounds were carried out. In 1926, when the Laanacoorie church closed, the building was transported to Tarnagulla to become the Sunday School Hall. In 1975 it became the Uniting Church. 2. The union Bank was originally a sub-branch of Melbourne and built a brick building in 1859. In 1866 the Union Bank bought the two storied building seen in the photo, from the Colonial Bank. where it remained until 1888. Two newspaper articles from the Bendigo Advertiser, one from 22/08/1953 and the other from 29/06/1950 relating to the presbyterian church and the Union Bank in Tarnagulla. This service was to dedicate a Memorial to Australian & British Servicemen who died at Sandakan and Ranau, North Borneo 1942 - 1945. It was unveiled at Strathdale Park Bendigo on 9.4.1995. This medal was presented to J.G.Ralston by the Orbost Cricket Club in 1929 for Fielding. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967. Doctor HAROLD ROBERT CATFORD was the first to be made a Life Member of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. The certificate was signed on the 8th Day of May 1947. He was first elected to Committee of the Bendigo Branch in 1918 and retired after 29 years at the AGM 1947 serving the whole time as Vice President. Doctor Harold Robert Catford enlisted as a Captain on 23.6.15 age 41 years and attached to HQ 29th Batt AIF. Embarked for overseas 10.11.15, transfer to 8th Field Ambulance 6.10.16. At various times he was attached to 5th Div Ammunition Column and 2nd A.C.C. Station, promoted to Major 24.8.17. He returned to Australia on 26.9.17 for personal reasons and his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 11.12.17. from 1.1.18 he was RMO to several military units including the 38th Batt in Peace time. Promoted to Lt Col on 19.4.23, placed on the AAMC reserve list 30.1.30 and then the retired list 30.1.1934. Life membership certificate of the Bendigo RSL awarded to Dr HR Catford. Certificate is set in a yellowish cardboard frame inside a silver wooden frame. The certificate is in colour with a red seal and signatures of Federal President and Secretary of the RSSILA. The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. The flag of Sardinia was adopted as the official flag of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The flag incorporates the armorial bearings of the Royal House of Savoy, the family who ruled Italy until it voted to become a republic in 1948. Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy featuring three vertical panels of green (hoist) white and red cotton, sewn together. Sewn into each side of the centre (white) panel is a representation of the coat of arms of the House of Savoy - a blue-bordered red square, quartered by a white cross. This flag would later become the flag of the Kingdom of Italy, and the tricolor without the Savoyard escutcheon remains the flag of Italy. The exact date of the creation of this flag is uncertain, however as it was in use in Italy until the formal establishment of the Italian Republic, it may have been made between 1848 and 1946. This particular flag was brought back at the conclusion of WWII and donated to the Terang RSL Sub-branch.The Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy is comprised of a red, white and green vertical cotton panels, which have been stitched together by cotton. Each panel is approximately 915 cm wide by 1.610 metres high. The centre panel has an appliquéd Savoy shield, with a centred white cross on red background, surrounded by a blue shield shaped border.

The Morwell War Memorial Morwell War was unveiled on 06 June 1921. The Memorial was originally the level crossing between Commercial Road and Station Street (later Princes Highway). It was later moved to its present position on the Princes Highway opposite Hoyle Street. Frank joined the army in 1915 and served with the 1st Bn. On 20/7 /1916 he was hospitalised with Shell Shock and medically discharged unfit on 20/12/1916. He re-enlisted on 3/8/1917 and joined the 13th battalions and proceeded to France. In October 1918. On 15/4/1919 he was hospitalised for unknown illness and returned to Australia. In 1938 he joined the 59th Battalion (Militia). On 26/6/1940 he was taken on strength (V30012) and served with the 2/21 and 2/14 Training Bn’s. On 16/2/1945 he was seconded for special duties with Z Special Unit and performed duty outside Australia between 27/4 and 30/9/1945. On 3/5/1946 he was placed on the retirement list . He joined the RSL in 1916 and Wangaratta Sub-Branch in 1933. Murray Comrie Collection. This image depicts stores in the main street of Tarnagulla, including the two-storey bank building being used as a licensed general store. The building on the left was also a bank, originally constructed by the Union Bank in 1859, and Is probably the first brick and stone building at Tarnagulla. It was used by the bank until 1888 at which time the Union and Colonial banks amalgamated. After this, the building was used for a variety of purposes. The milk bar section was constructed in the 1920s in an area at the front of what had once been the Bank’s manager’s residence. The Two-story bank building On the right was constructed and used by the Colonial Bank of Australasia (from 1866 to 1888) and, following bank amalgamation, by the Union Bank (from 1888 until closure in 1942). The original site had been occupied by Joseph Foo's store, a large wooden building with attached theatre. While the bank was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from the former Company's Hotel (soon after to become the Borough of Tarnagulla Council Chambers, then the Mechanics’ Institute, and finally, prior to final demolition in 1980, Burstall Hall) The new double-storey building was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is a now private residence. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. JOHM ADAMS was President of the Bendigo RSL from 1917 - 1921. He was one of the movers and mainstays in the formation of the Bendigo Sub Branch. It was also stated that his determination had carried into effect the plans for the "Soldiers Memorial Institute" Pall Mall Bendigo. John Adams had extensive service pre WW1 with Bendigo Volunteer Rifles,4th Militia BN, Victorian Cavalry,5th Militia and the 67th Bn. Appointed Lieutenant 25.11.1900, Capt 1.7.1907, Major 16.4.1913. He applied for a Commission in the AIF on 26.11.1914 and embarked on 22.12.1914 with the 14th BN for Gallipoli Campaign, WIA 3.5.1915, apon return to duty he took command of the 14th Bn for a period until invalided to England with chest and cardiac problems. He returned to Aust in Feb 1916 and his appointment was terminated on 22.4.1916. Post War with a change in retirement age he was invited to recommence service with the temporary rank of Lt Col to Command the 38th Bn when it returned to Aust in 1919. The Tom Flood Sports Centre was originally called The Bendigo Show Grounds. This plaque was unveiled by the City of Greater Bendigo & the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch to Commemorated the venue as a "Training Camp" during WW2. Order of Service was, Welcome, Mr Alan Holmes (President Bendigo RSL) Introduction of Recruits & Others associated with the Camp. A brief history of the Camp and Anecdotes was read by Mr Alan Holmes. Presentation and unveiling of the Plaque by Cr Barry Ackerman, Mayor City of Greater Bendigo. The wording: "Commemorating this site as an Australian Imperial Force Training Camp during WW2. "To the following Corps we pay Tribute" "10th AIF Training Depot" "Australian Army Medical Corps" "Australian Army Ordnance Corps" "Australian Army Service Corp". POST WWII: As a member of the British Armed Forces he applied to stay in Australia – the National Archives holds his application form. MARRIAGE: He married Isabel Noel Fulton in 1949, in Vic. AUST. MIL. FORCES: He joined the Aust. Army and served from 1953 to 1977. His number then was 35175 in the Royal Aust. Engineers. His last rank was Sergeant. Returned Service League: He spent some time as a member of the Castlemaine Sub Branch. DEATH: He died 28 JUN 2005. His remains are in the Garden of Remembrance, Springvale, VIC. Frederick Lloyd Carleton VX1555 served in the 2/23rd Battalion, 9th Division in the Middle East and in the Pacific. The images detail his day to day life at the front and on leave. He served during the siege of Tobruk and at El Alamein, and was a lifelong member of the Bendigo sub-branch of the Rats of Tobruk Association. Enlisted in the AIF 16.8.1916 age 27 with the rank of WO 2 No 4976 (had 9 years pre service) in14th Reinforcements 32 Bn AIF. Embarked for England 22.12.1917, embark for France 7.4.1918, WIA Shell Wound Buttock 15.5.1918, rejoin unit 18.8.1918, embark for Aust 22.1.1920, discharged 8.4.1920. Stayed in the Permanent Army. Enlisted in the 2nd AIF 1.7.1940 No VX48504. Overseas service listed as Middle East 16.11.1940 - 23.5.1942, New Guinea 8.9.1943 - 9.6.1944, Netherlands East Indies 16.5.1945 - 23.4.1946. He enlists then in the Interim Army No 3/133 on 1.7.1947 until 1.4.1950,, serves in Japan listed as 30.1.1948 - 6.5.1948. The photos are the presentation by Alan Holmes President of Bendigo RSL to Cliff Clohesy in February 1997. Clifford Clohesy served on the Committee Bendigo RSL 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1996, he was President the years 1993 to 1996. Cliff was a hard worker in the two RSL Appeals each year. One of his achievements was the building of 22 Single person units in Kangaroo Flat finished in 1997. Alan William Holmes served on the Committee 1993 to 2001. He was President the years 1997 to 2001. Two of the later years was the change over from Bendigo RSL to Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. He was the Organizer of events for the "Australia Remembers" 50 years after the end of WW2 in Bendigo. It was Alans proposal to turn the SMI into a Museum in 1996 with the first Museum Sub Committee being formed in May 1997 and the opening in February 1998. Now the Bendigo Military Museum. He stayed heavily involved until 2003. He was the organizer and conducted the Sandakan Memorial Service from 1999 to 2012. From there as much as possible Alan visited veterans in Nursing homes and a Wing of "BUPA" was named "Holmes Wing". This Document is the first in several plus photos and an article following the restoration of the Bendigo Cenotaph (Replica of the Cenotaph in Whitehall London). The letter is from the City of Bendigo Municipal Offices Lyttleton Terrace Bendigo is dated 13th April 1984 from the Building Surveyor Mr P.W. Phillips to Mr J.K. Barnes Secretary Bendigo RSL Sub Branch P.O.Box 449 Bendigo. Letter states that the Surveyors Report was adopted by Council on 21st November 1983 and would then be considered at Estimates later in the year. The Surveyors Report pages 2/3 gives a background report back to 1976 re its condition by the Building Surveyor at the time Mr R.H. Chellow and that an offer to fund at no cost was offered. Unfortunately this did not proceed. Council had approved funds for Stone work etc in the 1976/77 Estimates. The report is under several headings “Restoration of Cenotaph” being the history to this point. “Nature of Repairs Neccessary” - in brief, Extensive repairs, Granite structure is good, Sandstone needs 90% replacement, brick core in good order. “Estimate of Cost” A price of $30,000 for Budget purposes but could be as low as $25,000. “Recommendation” That Restoration be referred to the 1984/85 Estimates for consideration, copies to Bendigo RSL and State President RSL.Document 3 pages stapled together, front page is A4 and the pages 2/3 is Foolscap.Front page has a top section in blue, on the left is a depiction of a Mine Poppet Head, on the right is a Coat of Arms.
