The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.4 photographs relating to the McHaffie family. 466-15 & 466-16: Noel Wemyss & Vernon Suter Wemyss McHaffie were grandchildren of the first permanent European Settlers of Phillip Island (John David & Georgianna McHarrie who leased the whole Island as a sheep and cattle run for 45 years until Closer Settlement in 1868 reduced their holding to 640 acres and who are buried at the St. Kilda Cemetery, Melbourne). Donated by J W Gliddon with his comments on back of photograph. Taken when motorbike and car racing were run around the roads on Phillip Island. Racing first came to Phillip Island in 1927 in the form of a 200 mile road race for motorcycles on a circuit encompassing Cowes and Rhyll. In the next year, a shorter rectangular course, again on public roads, was used for the running of what became the first Australian Grand Prix. Eight successive Australian Grand Prix were run on this course before the race was moved elsewhere. Finally in 1935, racing was discontinued and Phillip Island lapsed into the tranquility and peacefulness of its quiet country and beach atmosphere.Black & White photograph of motorcycle riders on bike and sidecar. The item dates from the years of Dutch influence in the region which ended in 1962. The region is now known as West Papua.As the above urls will show, West Papua's history is a complex one with various colonial powers disputing ownership with the local inhabitants. Modern Indonesia also lays claim to it. The area was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1949 till 1962. Prior to 1949 it was part of the Dutch East Indies. The item may well date from this pre-1949 period.Richly illustrated small rectangular glass ashtray showing map of one-time Dutch New Guinea, surrounding waters and smaller islands. Two endemic bids are also shown. The glas is a pale blue; the illustrations are in green and yellow; words are in black. The ashtray's four sides are curled slightly upwards.Oceans, seas and islands are named in the Dutch language. A dotted border marks off Australian New Guinea.

Rogers Cottage was built by John Rogers on the hill on Churchill Island in the early 1860s.
