Photograph - Portrait of Julie Riley and Jennie Turner, Nicole Marie, 2021
Thousands of volunteers work tirelessly to conserve and protect the environment of Geelong and the Bellarine. Their work often goes unnoticed. In 'The Work of Nature' the National Wool Museum and the Environment Department at the City of Greater Geelong worked with photographer Nicole Marie to showcase the significant contribution of environment volunteers in our region. Each of the eight people showcased in these portraits were nominated by their peers and members of the community for their significant contribution to conserving and protecting the environment. Julie Riley and Jennie Turner - Friends of the Hooded Plover Breamlea The hooded plover is one of Australia’s most threatened birds. Although they spend their whole life on the beach, they have one of the lowest breeding success rates of all birds. Although severely threatened, in the last decade their numbers have slowly stabilised as volunteer groups and conservationists have stepped in to protect their breeding grounds. Julie and Jennie run the hooded plover volunteer program in Breamlea. To those who work with them they are, “a powerhouse of strength, resilience and determination to help these birds survive”. They put in hundreds of hours of works over a season for it to often eventuate to nothing. If a person crushes a nest or a chick is lost the day before it’s due to fledge, all their efforts are gone. But after each failure they continue to show up and slowly things are changing. Clothing - Cream Tussar Silk Wedding Dress, c.1912
The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. This wedding dress was worn by the grandmother of Val Warren.Raw silk wedding dress. The full length dress has lace on the bodice and long sleeves. Other decorative elements include finely pleated silk panels on the bodice, an insert on the skirt and on the cuffs of the sleeves The dress features extensive use of both utilitarian and decorative buttons that are covered in the same silk fabric as the dress. The final photograph shows two early repairs to the dress. Lydia Edwards in 'How to Read A Dress (Bloomsbury Academic, 2017), when describing a 1912 dress in the McCord Museum notes that: 'In 1911-12 the use of buttons for both fastening and decoration was extremely popular, the American women's magazine The Delineator declaring at the end of 1911 that "one cannot use buttons to liberally in the present mode".' Mont De Lancey
Magazines, 1944
In November 1932, Frank Packer and Ted Theodore purchased the World, a struggling afternoon newspaper owned and operated by the Australian Workers' Union in Sydney, and re-branded it as the Star. Approached by Sir Hugh Denison, who enjoyed a monopoly over the Sydney newspaper market, they were offered 86,500 Pounds to close the paper if they agreed not to publish a morning, evening or Sunday newspaper within a 300-mile radius of the city for three years. Packer and Theodore accepted the offer, the the Weekly was a way of skirting the embargo, it would be a women's newspaper, and it would be self-sufficient. George Warnecke envisioned the Weekly as a publication with an Australian outlook, appealing to all sections of society, and offering an element of news in every article, whether it concern fashion, cookery, or parenting. When the first issue appeared in Sydney on June 10, 1933, it was printed in black-and-white newspaper format and priced at twopence per copy, "the biggest value in the world". It had sold out by lunchtime. 4 x Australian Women's Weekly magazines. Dated:- 1. December 4, 1943; 2. July 29, 1944; 3. August 5, 1944; and 4. September 2, 1944. All were priced at 4d.magazines -

Photograph, Surrey Hills Bowling Club opening in 1912, 1912
James Albon, far right, built a bowling green at his home on the corner of Mont Albert Road and Wilson Street (later occupied by the convent). This green was so popular with his friends that he organised the formation of a bowling club at the corner of Montrose and Wilson Streets. Mr John Kendrick Blogg, wearing the white hat, is standing in the doorway. Earliest club records date from 1916. This was the original club-house; it was rebuilt in 1922/23 using interlocking blocks as recommended by Walter Burley-Griffin. This was quite an innovative design at the time. In turn cream brick buildings replaced this building in the 1950s. The Surrey Hills Bowls Club disbanded in 1995. Our original is framed copy donated by the Surrey Hills Bowls Club (with a spare copy and negative). Someone from the club has the original. Thre is also a frames portrait of James Albon the 1st president in the collection. (NB/ Duplicate = 1813; No.1943 is from the Bowling Club). Some information from Mrs Merle Phillips (deceased) a member when the club closed.A black and white photograph of a group of men and women dressed in their finery.
