The Melbourne General Cemetery opened in June 1853. The first male buried there was John Alexander Burnett, chief clerk to the mercantile firm of Dalgety, Borradale & Co. The headstone reads: In Memory of James Alexander Burnett, Merchant, Who Died 25 May 1853, Aged 36 Years. Burnett Street, St Kilda, is named after him. The street was created by F. G.
