A lace head dress belonging to the women of the family of George Ward Cole’s in the late 1800s. George Ward Cole was an early member of the Victorian Parliament and the family featured prominently in Melbourne Society in their time. They established a substantial home known as “St Ninians” at 10 Miller Street in 1841. The family reportedly entertained Melbourne’s first Royal visitor the Duke Of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria’s second son, at St Ninians in 1867. In later years St Ninians was subsequently subdivided and later demolished. A hand sewn cream lace cap from late 1800s. A silk satin ribbon that encircles the back of the crown of the head, creates the structure of this cap. Towards the front it also has a net and wire-reinforced peak. Over the top of this support is a central diamond shaped lace piece of seven and a half centimeters diameter to which is attached a fine lace net that is gathered and stitched around the edge of the central lace. Two decorative bows of the same silk satin fabric are positioned on the support over the top of the lace at either temple of the wearer. "W-COLE" hand stitched on inside of band. The swift winder together with lace pieces was bought in Europe by Nan Warner, who was a retired school teacher and together with her husband Max travelled to Europe and China after they retired. Nan joined a lace making group in the late 1970s who until well into the 1980s and 1990s the group met in each others homes once a month in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne around the Vermont and Ringwood area. The group later became part of the Australian Lace Guild. The donor was also a lacemaker in the group. A saw is a tool consisting of a tough blade, wire, or chain with a hard-toothed edge. It is used to cut through material, very often wood, though sometimes metal or stone. The cut is made by placing the toothed edge against the material and moving it forcefully forth and less vigorously back or continuously forward. This force may be applied by hand, or powered by steam, water, electricity or other power sources. An abrasive saw has a powered circular blade designed to cut through metal or ceramic. In ancient Egypt, open (unframed) saws made of copper are documented as early as the Early Dynastic Period, circa 3,100–2,686 BC. Many copper saws were found in tombs dating to the 31st century BC. Models of saws have been found in many contexts throughout Egyptian history. As the saw developed, teeth were raked to cut only on the pull stroke and set with the teeth projecting only on one side, rather than in the modern fashion with an alternating set. Saws were also made of bronze and later iron. In the Iron Age, frame saws were developed holding the thin blades in tension. The earliest known sawmill is the Roman Hierapolis sawmill from the third century AD used for cutting stone. this item was made to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth !! in 1953. In June 1953 , Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and Pakistan, and became the Head of the Commonwealth. Many souvenirs were made to mark this occasion. Some were unique and hand-made. The main sources for crochet and other needlework designs available to women were in journals, magazines and pattern books.This milk jug cover reflects an important pastime for Australian women of the late 19th to mid 20th century. Women's focus was the home and its decoration was important. Embroidery and crochet work was an affordable way to personalise and add aesthetic value, and examples of embroidered and crocheted pieces could be found in most Australian homes, decorating or protecting furniture, floors and walls, and keeping flies and insects away from food. This music was used by Frank Wright who had been tutored by Percy Code. Frank Wright won the Australian Open Cornet Championship using this music, and won the gold medal for the highest mark in the British Colonies. Percy Code was born in Melbourne on 03 July 1888. He started learning the violin and piano at the age of eight. Three years later his father, Edward, started tutoring him on the cornet. His first competition was in October 1902 in Ballarat's South Street Competitions. Percy Code was Musical Director of Ballarat City Brass Band from 1913 until 1921. He was Frank Wright's teacher. Code apparently lived in a large house just west of where St Peter's church (Ballarat) now stands. Percy Code toured the world as principal cornet with the 'Besses o' th' Barn Band.' He returned to Australia in 1912. Frank Wright at one stage rode his pushbike from Smeaton to Ballarat for lessons. Leaving Australia for America in March 1921 Percy Code obtained an appointment as trumpet soloist for the 70 piece San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He returned home two years later and became bandmaster to the Prahran City Band in 1925. From 1938, as part of Australia's Sesqui Centenary celebrations, Percy Code conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the ABC orchestral concerts in Sydney Town Hall. His career with the ABC came to an end in late 1951 due to poor health. Percy Code died on 17 October 1953. Erith Lane would have been named after Eliza Erith, the wife of Thomas Hand of Mountain Grange. The house made of slabs and bark pictured (centre) is where the family lived before Mountain Grange was built. Mabel Hand, Thomas and Eliza's youngest daughter stated that she was born in the bark hut in 1881 and they moved into the new home the same year. Cherry Farm, the roof visible behind the centre building, was the home of William Hand, son of Thomas and Eliza. Ladies’ gloves were an essential part of life in the 1840s to 1900 Victorian era, regardless of class most ladies wore gloves. The glove design, material, and fit would hint at a lady's status, despite their hands being covered. A shorter style of glove would have been used for daytime wear, along with the matching parasol cover and would be matched to the owner's outfit. Leather was a material often used since the 1900s, however when WWI hit the price of leather gloves increased and many resorted to cheaper materials for their accessories. Although particular styles for evening-wear gloves altered throughout the 20th Century, the classic neutral leather glove was a staple throughout Australian ladies' fashion during this time. The need for gloves and parasol cover however disappeared in the 1960s when gloves were only used in the winter months as a practicality rather than a fashion accessory.The leather gloves and parasol cover indicate the owner was wealthy and was able to spend money on good quality accessories. This may have been due to the fact that Chiltern was a gold-rush town and would have had some wealthy families living there from the late 19th Century. The leather items are a symbol of such wealth and social signifiance in the rural town of Chiltern.Gloves: Beige colour with brown hand stitched detail on the upper hand - 3 lengths. Hand operated sewing machine made in Germany in the late nineteenth century. Mrs Weiss, a young Templer Lutheran living in Palestine, owned it and took it with her to Heluan, Egypt, where Germans in this region were interned during WWI. Her permission to take it was dependent on her sharing the machine with other internees. When the Templers in Palestine were interned in WWII, the sewing machine accompained Mrs Weiss and her family to Tatura in 1941 on the condition that other imternees would also use it. After the war it was taken to South Australia where its use by Mrs Weiss continued until they replaced it with an electric machine.Wooden case/cover for hand operated sewing machine. The item is a soft cover book recording factory orders of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each handwritten page records the customer orders by date, name and goods supplied. The soft cardboard cover is navy blue with considerable wearing to the bottom right hand side corner, water damage to the top left hand corner and stains on the front and back. A paper rectangle is stuck to the front cover on which was stamped "Factory Order Book" but much of it is missing. The pages are bound together with string. The book includes the date range of October 1896 to December 1897. All pages have been used. A collection of documents which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. He outlined which legatees suggested different things - such as Selleck suggested the name of Legacy, Doolan put forward the child scheme. He also recorded birth dates of some Legatees: Selleck born 20/8/1895 ; Savige 26/6/1890 ; Ellet 30/3/1880 ; TW White 26/4/1888. Other documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. X-Rays were first discovered on 08 November 1895. By 18 July 1896 staff members of the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB), were experimenting with the exciting new discovery. The history of x-rays began on 08 November 1895 at the University of Wurzburg in Bavaria. The discovery was officially announced on 25 December 1895. The first radiographs in Ballarat were taken at the School of Mines in July 1896 according to the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) Annual Report. Frederick J. Martell, the Registrar of SMB arranged for the importation of tubes, while John M. Sutherland, an electrician, conducted most of the experiments giving 6 inch, 12 inch and 16 inch sparks respectively. In a short time brilliantly successful results were obtained, with some SMB Roentgen negatives taken at this time still in existence today. Samuel Ernest Figgis, H. R. W. Murphy, D. McDougall, and Frederick J. Martell carried out experiments at the SMB on Saturday evening 18 July 1896, producing 'perfect' negatives of a hand and wrist. A Roentgen Tube and an induction coil giving a two inch spark, the coil being sparked by the SMB's dynamo, were used to obtain these results. The Courier reported that 'the exposure of five minutes was ample' but concluded that 'the length of the exposure will be shortened as experiments proceed.' The Ballarat Courier reported on 20 July 1896 that: "Thanks to the energy of the staff of The School of Mines, Ballarat, and particularly to Messers F.J. Martell and D. McDougall, the assistance of Rontgen X-rays will soon be available, for the relief of suffering humanity, at this institution." Martell was an ardent amateur photographer, and Duncan McDougall's experience as an electrician has enabled the two gentlemen to carry their experiments on to a perfectly successful issue. At first these gentlemen, together with Professor Purdie and Mr W. Huey Steele, conducted a series of experiments by the aid of a Bonetti glass-plate induction machine which had been constructed by Mr McDougall. The results were very good, the various bones of the hand being distinctly visible. The following people were among those who witnessed the first X-ray experiments to be carried out in Ballarat. In each case the patient was suffering from the effects of an old wound or some other injury to other a hand or foot. One patient, a boy had a finger broken some years earlier and when xray plate of the injury was developed it indicated plainly the fracture on one of the joints of the third finger. In another case a woman had a foot had a foot X-rayed and the photograph revealed the seat of an earlier imjury to it. Likewise an injury to the bones of a hand of an elderly man was revealed by an x-ray photograph. Every X-ray photograph that evening showed the importance of this new development in electrical science and the doctors present agreed the "the results of the experiments on their patients, by showing the exact seat of the injury and its present condittion, would materially assist them iin supporting cures." This was knitted by Marjorie Burton during WW11 in England. She used to knit while in an air raid shelter escaping the bombing with her young daughter. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who mademany of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Her father served in Civil Defence during the war. Marjorie was in Birmingham during the war and remembered sheltering with her young daughter, Anne (Quaadgras) in the air raid shelter during bombing. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the handcraft skills of women necessary during WW11 when clothing became scarce. Illuminated address received by James Ross Briggs Esq. on the occassion of his retirement as Town Clerk and Treasurer by the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of the City of Caulfield. 2 page watercolour and ink address bound in maroon and gold tooled leather folder, The address, presented on cream colour card, is secured inside the folder by a piece of maroon colour rope ribbon and strip of leather running vertically down the centre. The address is hand lettered in red and black ink and watercolour decorations include James Ross Briggs name in a scroll surrounded by sprigs of yellow wattle and a blue, pink and yellow decorative border. A red, paper seal has been placed beside the signatures of the Mayor, Town Clerk and Councillors.
