This photograph shows the Lower Light at Flagstaff Hill, Warrnambool, in 1895, part of the Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex. The photograph is part of the Western Victoria collection produced in 1891 by Brookes' Photographic Union in Victoria. Brookes' Photographic Union was a collaboration of two brothers, Frederick Augustus Brookes and his brother Albert Edward Brookes. Frederick arrived in Victoria in the early 1880's. He and Albert formed the organisation to produce collections of photographs including the districts of Geelong, Gippsland and the Western Victoria. This photograph was taken and published just after the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater. The image records a snapshot of the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater, a construction that changed the history of the Port of Warrnambool, It is also a record of the Flagstaff Hill area and at that time.Photograph, sepia coloured rectangular shape, mounted between two sheets of cream card. Border of photograph is decorated with pen lines and design in corners. Subject is the Warrnambool Harbour, with a lighthouse on a hill in the foreground, a light coloured picket fence, the harbour with a moored vessel and a jetty. This black and white photograph was taken when the SS Edina was as port at the Gellong Wharf in Moorabool Street. The Port of Geelong had many wool sheds alongside the wharf - wool was a major export product. ABOUT THE S S EDINA The three masted iron screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle. She was adorned with the figurehead of ‘fair maid of Judea’. The many years of service made SS Edina famous world-wide as the longest serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Chanel runs, serving in the Crimean Ware carrying ammunition, horses and stores to the Black Sea, and further service in the American Civil War and later, serving in the western district of Victoria as well as in Queensland and carried gold, currency and gold prospectors Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina had the privilege of being an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. In March 1863 SS Edina arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne and was bought by Stephen Henty, of Portland fame, to work the cargo and passenger run from Melbourne – Warrnambool – Port Fairy - Portland. After a short time of working the run from Australia to New Zealand, with passengers and cargo that included gold and currency, she returned to her Melbourne - Warrnambool – Port Fairy run, with cargo including bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company purchased SS Edina in 1867; she was now commanded by Captain John Thompson and Chief Engineer John Davies. She survived several mishaps at sea, had a complete service and overhaul and several changes of commanders. In 1870 SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprung up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and it was not ever replaced. SS Edina was re-fitted in 1870 then was used as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period. She was then brought to Melbourne to carry cargo and passengers between Melbourne and Geelong and performed this service 1880-1938. During this time (1917) she was again refitted with a new mast, funnel, bridge and promenade deck, altering her appearance. In 1938, after more collisions, SS Edina was taken out of service. However she was later renamed Dinah and used as a ‘lighter’ (a vessel without engine or superstructure) to be towed and carry wool and general cargo between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years, the SS Edina was broken up at Footscray, Melbourne. Remains of SS Edina’s hull can be found in the Maribyrnong River, Port Phillip Bay. Postcards began to be produced in Victoria from 1876. Between 1900 and 1920, picture postcards in Australia became an incredibly popular phenomenon. People could cheaply and easily send messages, without the formality of a letter, and they provided a cheap form of souvenir. Eventually, every event of significance was commemorated in some way with a postcard, and this led to the development of a ‘picture on one side and a message/stamp on the other’ postcard we are familiar with today. They were also a popular form of advertising. This postcard appears to be one in a set of postcards promoting the Black Rock area.Postcard with photographic image which appears to have been hand tinted depicting Half Moon Bay beach at Black Rock. In the foreground in tea-tree bush, the foreshore has beach shacks on it, along with many small boats moored in the bay. A long jetty enters the bay. The photograph has been taken from the cliff top. These dishes were part of a crockery set used in the George Rolfe household at Lyndoch, Warrnambool. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a Melbourne tea merchant who acquired land at the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool from the 1880s on as a holiday home. He developed the property over the years, adding a windmill and reservoir, bone and chaff sheds, a stable, jetty and boathouse and an extensive garden. In 1891 he married Mrs Annie Lake and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built the house, Lyndoch in the 1920s. This building today forms part of an Aged Care Facility. This item is part of the larger Rolfe dinner set as described on Victorian Collections at VC001421 and VC001422These dishes are of importance as they belonged to the George Rolfe family of Lyndoch, Warrnambool. They demonstrate the quality of the household goods used by more affluent families in the second half of the 19th century. These are four china serving dishes or plates which are part of a set of crockery used in the Rolfe Lyndoch household in Warrnambool. The dishes have a circular base with a circular dish resting on the base. The dishes have or had two handles with these handles and the edges of the dishes being gold trimmed. Around the rim of the dishes is a pattern of loops and dots etc of teal and gold. One dish (.1) has no handles, one dish (.4) has one handle only and two dishes are cracked (.3 & .4) . These saucers are part of a crockery set that belonged to George Rolfe and his family. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a tea merchant in Melbourne who bought land at the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1880s. He had adjoining land and the properties of ‘Shipley’ and ‘Fairy Hill’ and developed ‘Lyndoch’, adding stables, jetty, boat house, windmill and reservoir, chaff and bone sheds and an extensive garden. In 1891 he married Annie Lake and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built the ‘Lyndoch’ house still standing today. ‘Lyndoch’ today is now the site of an Aged Care Facility. This item is part of the Rolfe Dinnerset as described on Victorian Collections at VC001420 and VC001422.These saucers, part of a crockery set, are kept because they belonged to George Rolfe, a prominent property owner and farmer in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The items, dating from 1864, have social significance showing the type of crockery used by a more affluent family in the 19th century. These are six circular china saucers with a gold rim and ornamentation in a scallop design in gold and teal around the rim and the outer edges. The base of the saucers has a gold rim. One of the saucers has a chip on the edge and four show significant wearing of the inner gold circle. Some of the outside gold edging also shows wear. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages.This document is is a surety between John McDermit a saddler of Liebig Street Warrnambool along with Henry Phillips hay and corn dealer of Liebig Street Warrnambool, acting as surety in the amount of fifty pounds to William Bell a contractor to perform horse work for the Warrnambool tramways. for a period of one year, 1881-1882. This contract has a strong historical link to one of Warrnambool's earliest infrastructure projects . Memorial built to the memory of s.s.Casino and the 10 lives lost when the ship on the morning of 10 July 1932 after attempting to berth at Apollo Bay jetty in heavy seas pierced her hull with the fluke of her anchor She put about again and headed for the beach but sank. It was unveiled on 8 July 1934 by Mrs. C.A. Melhuish, daughter of Captain Thomas Boyd the first master of the Casino. It is bluestone cairn supporting the Casino's propeller and the town wreck bell. The article relates the journalist's visit to Phillip Island, starting from Melbourne and describing features along the way, then at San Remo on mainland side of Phillip Island bridge, then Newhaven on the other. Other places visited include the main town of Cowes, the jetty and beach there, and the Nobbies (Point Grant), with views of the Seal Rocks offshore through telescope at the Nobbies. The writer also visited Summerland beach, described as a surf beach, with penguin and mutton bird rookeries. While not specifically referring to the Penguin Parade, the writer says the spectacle of seeing the penguins coming ashore is not to be missed. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.The McKenzie Children: Late one night in 1934, Mr Bryant West and Mr Loton heard cries for help from the vicinity of the Cowes Jetty. Attempts were made to save a woman and the children. Sadly only the adult could be rescued. The three young bodies were later recovered and buried in the cemetery. Rick Amor was a good friend of three times Archibald Prize winner Clifton Pugh, living and working at Pugh's artist colony Dunmoochin, (Cottles Bridge) during the 1980-1990s. Amor made frequent outdoor painting trips with Pugh. His studies of Williamstown and areas around the port fuelled a period of sustained painting in his studio at Dunmoochin. Amor is an artist of national significance who had lived locally in Dunmoochin (Cottles Bridge) during the time of this work's making. This painting was exhibited/entered into the 1993 Shire of Eltham Art Awards. The work is representative of Amor's style and interest in seascapes as subject matter. Oil on linen, seascape painting. A solitary and motionless male figure in an overcoat stands at the edge of a dock/jetty with his hands in his pockets looking out to sea with his back towards the viewer. A motorised boat is moored close by and a white house with a blue roof can be seen in the distance. The figure is engulfed by the landscape and a resounding sense of desolation. A storm is brewing; the mood forecast by dark, heavy and thick ominous clouds, alternately darkening with the approach of night, a polluted haze and rough seas. The horse work involved the transporting of goods by horse drawn tram trucks, all repairs to the tracks , shunting and delivery duties. This is a traffic report of the Warrnambool Tramway in 1880. The Warrnambool Tramway ran from the south end of Fairy Street near the present day railway sheds past the site of the old Woollen Mill, then extended towards the Warrnambool Bay on the easterly side of the site today of the Lady Bay Apartments and on to the Tramway Jetty. The Tramway was completed in 1858 and was horse-drawn. It was leased to private individuals until 1864 when the Warrnambool Council took over the management. The Tramway closed in 1890 when the Breakwater was opened and it had its own spurline from the railway station to the end of the Breakwater. The 1880 report shows that contractors were paid over £300 and that 26, 409 tons of potatoes and 9167 bales of wool were carried by the Tramway in that year. This report is of interest as it shows the operations of the Warrnambool Tramway in 1880. The iron anchor is from the iron steamship, Easby built in England in 1873. It struck Skerries Reef at Gabo Island and sank in the harbour in April 1907 while carrying a cargo of potatoes. The iron anchor was recovered from the wreck at an unknown date and put on display between the two sets of keepers’ quarters. Parts of the ship, including the collapsed hull plating, engine and boilers as well as another anchor lie at a shallow depth at the wreck site 15m west of the jetty. This wreck became a shipping hazard and was eventually blown up. (1928) Another anchor of identical design lies underwater on the shoreline 15 metres west of the jetty.The wreck site and relics, including the anchor on display, are protected by the Victorian Heritage Register (VHDS S204).Large rusted metal anchor.

In the centre is a drawing of a steam ship sailing to the horizon. The ship shows two funnels. A cannon on the quarter deck and 4 twin A.A. guns can be seen in the image. There are figures on the stern. In the bottom left is a jetty with vague figures crowded on it. Front right corner shows a black and white portrait of an Australian Soldier. This card relates to an excursion aboard “The SS Otway leaving the Warrnambool Jetty at 8 am April 18th 1873 to go to Belfast and Portland courtesy of the Warrnambool Steam Navigation Company Limited which was originally called the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. The Otway was the second steamer purchased by the company. It had a number of ships which traded along the coast including, the Nelson, Julia Percy, Otway and The Edina. The Edina was originally owned by Stephen Henty who was operating it from Portland but he sold it to the new company for £8500. Henty then withdrew from the Belfast and Warrnambool trade for a time but it proved to be a competitive business. The name was changed again in 1878 to The Western Steam Navigation Company and the SS Otway was put up for sale. This card relates to one of the first trips, if not the first trip, taken by the SS Otway Shipping was a major part of the history of Warrnambool and this ticket is a link to one of the earliest passenger and freight services which operated along the coast.Small cream card with light purple text with company name at the top. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. According to these documents , the horses were required for many different tasks in the operation of the tramways including the moving of freight, removal of sand from the area, shunting of trucks and ballasting and repairing lines when necessary.The contractors had a list of conditions imposed including the provision of six horses of strong working ability and sufficient finances. The contract period was for 1 year and payment was monthly in arrears and hours of operation were from 7 am to 6 pm. These handwritten documents provide an insight into the type of work done in the early days of Warrnambool and the working conditions at the time. Five folded grey paper with red lines around edges. Erection of new butts by the members of the St Kilda Volunteer Army Corps in 1874, after the government took possession of the land that the Volunteer Army Corps had been using. The butts were banks constructed of sand and earth, kept together with saplings, to create areas for shooting practice. They were constructed on the beach at Hobson's Bay, half a mile from the St Kilda jetty.
