Historical significance. HMS Hydra (A144) was a deep ocean hydrographic survey vessel. She was the third of 3 Hecla Class vessel's , laid down on 14th May 1964 at Yarrow Shipbuilders at Scotstoun on the River Clyde and commissioned 4th May 1966. Displacement of 2000 tons (2945 fully loaded).Length 79 Mtrs. Beam 15.4 Mtrs. Draught 4.9 mtrs. Compliment of 12 Officers and 116 crewmen. Saw operations during Falklands War. The object is a cast iron plaque.The Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint was established in 1965 after negotiations between Victoria and the British Exchequer. The original site contained 9,763 square meters and included a large area at the rear of the building. On this area, November 16th, 1869, the erection commenced of a single storey building forming three sides of a courtyard and containing workshops, laboratories and coining hall. The Guard Houses and this existing building, which completed the courtyard and housed administrative offices, deputy master's quarters and bullion room followed. All these buildings were designed by J. J. Clark, architect with the Public Works Department. The official opening took place on June 6th, 1872, when the first gold sovereigns were minted. The Hon. Nathaniel Levi (1830-1908) was the first Jewish Member of the Parliament of Victoria. He served in the Legislative Assembly from 1861-1867, representing the electorates of Maryborough (1 Jan 1861 - 1 Dec 1865) and East Melbourne (1 Feb 1866 - 1 Dec 1867). He later served in the Legislative Council for the North Yarra electorate (1 Sep 1872 - 1 Jan 1904). Born in Liverpool on 20 Jan 1830, he arrived in Melbourne in April 1854 on the Matilda Wattenbach, opened a store and established a career as a businessman. In 1858 he joined the firm of John Levey & Son, Melbourne and Maryborough. He pioneered the coal and sugar beet industries; established the firm of Nathaniel Levi & Company c1867; commenced auctioneering and agency business c1870; obtained contract for railway advertising c1875; with his two sons (Joseph and John) as partners, the firm became Nathaniel Levi & Sons c1884. He commenced a short-lived newspaper, the Daily News, in Oct 1885. He was a founder and trustee of the Chamber of Manufactures, and its President 1893-1895. He married Sarah Levy in 1855. Nathaniel Levi was prominent in the Jewish community and was President of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in 1880–82 and 1904–05. The Pioneer Miners’ Monument marks the very first finding of gold at Poverty Point in 1851. The quartz structure features a replica of the 62.8kg Welcome Nugget – the world’s largest at the time, found in Ballarat in 1858. The original was once displayed, and local mothers would sit their babies on top for luck. The artwork tells the story of gold discovery with plaques and dates of some of the more famous gold nuggets finds in Ballarat and is a reminder that these gold discoveries changed the world for Australians. Used for straight cutting along the grain of thick timber, rip saws were typically 24 to 28 inches long with 3 to 6 points (ripsaw teeth) per inch along the length of the steel blade. The cut made by the saw, the ‘kerf’ is wider than the thickness of the blade as the bent teeth take out small pieces of wood, or sawdust. The kangaroo brass stamp indicates the saw originated from Robert Sorby and sons’ Kangaroo Works, in Sheffield, UK.
