The tramway was operated by Charles Henry James in an attempt to sell land developed by him north of the Fairfield railway station. The tramway operated from 20/12/1884 until its closure in 1890. The Brighton - St Kilda Bus lines could issue tickets, as an agent, from St Kilda Railway Station to Melbourne on behalf of the Victorian Railways. These dated tickets represent a sample of these. A group of tickets would be issued to each driver for the day who would issue them in order from his ticket tray or kit. When Australia changed from imperial currency to decimal currency on 14/2/1966, a well-planned operation of conversion took place. This involved changing public transport tickets as well, especially those where a printed value was shown. The MMTB printed dual currency tickets as part of the process.
