Private James Edward Matthews (3174) was one of four first cousins living in the Myrtleford district killed during World War 1. He was in the 60th Battalion, A.I.F. action at Fromelles, France, and was killed in action, aged 19 years, on July 19,1916. He was the son of Richard and James Matthews of Myrtleford and has no known grave, but is "Remembered with Honour" at V.C. Corner, Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles. James attended Myrtleford State School 955; his death is recorded on honour boards at the Uniting (formerly Methodist) Church, the school honour board and at the Soldier's memoral Square. A memorial window at the church includes names of the four cousins.The portrait reminds viewers of the youth of many A.I.F. volunteers, the outcome of actions such as that at Fromelles in 1916 and the impact on families in small communities. It also relates to the ongoing search for identifiable remains of those personnel without a known resting place. This quilt was made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Donvale Christian College. Mrs Anne Suk was one of the few women who held a place on the Board of the School in its early years. She was a member of one of the founding families. This is one of very few items to survive from the early years of the school. It was specifically created to celebrate the 25th anniversary.Machine pieced pale blue Quilt with navy and olive green borders and navy binding. School logo and swag of flowers have been machine pieced and appliqued on the quilt. The quilt has then been hand quilted with navy thread.On the back there is a label with "J.H.E. Suk" machine stitched on it. Salmon coloured buckram hardcover, hand painted & printed in white with decoration. Grave of Annie E. Lines (died 16/06/1929) and Charles C. Lines (died 17/04/1942) in Plot#F11/F12 Greensborough Cemetery. Plaque on this grave has been replaced.Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864. The cemetery holds the graves of many of the early settlers in the district. The cemetery holds approximately 250 grave sites with 350 people buried there.
