Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide, South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. David Alexander was a medical doctor in Ballarat for many years. Alongside his medical work he was a committed artist, producing a large body of work over his lifetime. He was an instigator of the Federation University Art Collection and was a great supporter of local artists. Geoff Mainwaring taught painiting at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Ponsonby May CAREW SMYTH Ponsonby May Carew Smyth was born at Cork, Ireland, Carew-Smyth studied at the Belfast School of Art and Design. Carew Smyth taught at the National Art Training School, London and Rugby School. He arrived in Australia in January 1891 , and was appointed Principal of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery School (Ballarat West Technical Art School) from 1891 to 1899. In 1907 Carew Smyth was Chief Inspector of Art for the Victorian Education Department. He designed commemorative wall plaques for state schools after World War One. In 1936 Carew Smyth was Acting Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Before her marriage to Ron Kirner, Joan Hood taught at the Ballarat Girls' Junior Technical School in the late 1950s. The Girls' school was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. After entering politics Joan Kirner was Minister for Education (1988) and Premier of Victoria (1990 to 1992). In 1992 Premier of Victoria Joan Kirner visited her former workplace to officially open and name four new facilities, marking stage 2 of the school's State Works and Services Development Project. Honoured in the naming ceremony was the late Albert Steane, the late Kenneth Fleckoe and Mr Jack Barker, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. The fourth facility was the recently opened carpentry and joinery complex. Mrs Kirner said naming the building in honour of the three men would act as a continual reminder of their contribution to education in Australia and what they have passed on to future generations. She said the Government and the State Training Board saw the college as not only one that was most important to Victoria but also nationally and internationally. Percy Richards taught Architecture and Building Construction at The Ballarat Art School - a division of Ballarat School of Mines from 1918-1921. He was responsible for the design of a number of buildings in the district. This item is the "Specification of work required to be done and materiaals required for construction of the new A.N.A. Building at the corner of Sturt, Albert and Lewis Streets, Ballarat. Prepared by and to the satisfaction of P.S. Richards, A.R.V.I.A. Architect and subject to the General Conditions of Contract." "BALLARAT CITY A.N.A. BALLARAT, Wednesday — The Ballarat City branch, A.N.A., which was formed nearly 50 years ago, ranks fourth on the association records, but several of the members were prominent in establishing the association in Melbourne a year or two earlier. On the past half-year's operations the total funds increased by £1558/18/3 to £29.389/11/11. The membership now totals 949. The committee recommended that as the property at the corner of Sturt and Albert Streets, which had been intended as the site of a new hall, had been sold, steps should he taken to remodel the present hall, and bring It up to date.
