Padbury’s Funeral Parlour in Kew was the earliest business of its kind in what is now the City of Boroondara. It was established by John Padbury in 1859. Following his death, the company was renamed A W Padbury & Co. John Padbury was involved in meetings in 1861, calling for Kew to become an independent municipality. In 1863, he argued that a lunatic asylum would bring business to shopkeepers. His company was located at 13 Cotham Road, next to the rear entrance of the Kew Police Station. The two-storey building is still [in 2023] extant. Members of the Padbury family married into a number of pioneer Kew families including the Whitmans and Morgans. John Cross B.A. (1862 - 1924) Born at Brown Hill in 1862. B.A. University of Melbourne. Worked for 43 years in the Education Department, first as a teacher, and later as an inspector of schools. Involved with the Brown Hill and Graham St. Methodist Churches. Mary Forrest Gardner married Joseph Bartlett Davies on 6th February 1872 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Launceston, Tasmania. She was the sister-in-law of Sir Matthew Davies, first Australian-born Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Her father was the Rev. John Gardner. She died on 28th October 1887 and was buried at the Boroondara Cemetery. The Mentone Presbyterian Church was built as a memorial to her. The foundation stone of the church was laid by J. Mrs Annie Sterling was the wife of the Reverend John Gray Sterling, a Presbyterian minister who was born in Belfast Northern Ireland in 1858 and was ordained in Rockhampton in 1881.
