Historically this ledger not only details the legible hand writing of this era but also the day to day commercial activity in this region. The neatness and the diligence of those who were required to pen the information was a requirement by all who were in commercial trade. Emphasis on neatness was ingrained in students at a young age. This era was well before general typewriters and computers. Generally all students of commerce required an accuracy in writing and arithmetic. Neatness and order were a selection requirement This item clearly identifies the Kiewa Valley as having a substantial financial hub to accommodate the various commercial enterprises within a rural environment Circa 1880's. Although Kiewa Valley had mining, agriculture, cattle and sheep it was also composed of a mixed society, encompassing all levels of society at that period. This is a booklet containing the newspapers published on board the ship, ‘General Wyndham’ during its voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne in 1857. The newspapers may be copies of the newspapers rather than original ones. Betsey(Betsy/ Betty) Smith, the wife of Thomas Smith of Warrnambool, came to Australia with their daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth) on board the ‘General Wyndham’ in 1857 on the particular voyage during which these newsletters were printed (the emigrant ships coming to Australia at that time usually carried printing presses of some kind). It is conjectured that Thomas Smith who had come to Australia on an earlier voyage and who was a printer in Koroit Street, Warrnambool in the 19th century, printed and bound the newsletters that his wife had kept. This book is of great importance as a good collection of the newsletters printed on board emigrant ships. If the newsletters came from Betsy Smith then the significance is even greater. The newsletters tell us so much about life on board the ‘General Wyndham’ ship – the range of articles, the light-hearted humorous touches, the accounts of the deaths on board, the picture of life on board that is conveyed and the overall professional look of the newsletters make the journal interesting to read and of great historical interest. This is a bound book of 44 pages containing a collection of nine newsletters printed on board the ship, ‘General Wyndham’ in 1857. The cover is light brown and is very stained. The contents of the newspapers include poems, news items, reports of the ship’s log and its progress, accounts of the activities and organizations aboard the ship, letters to the editor and editorials. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. The book also has articles on the Federal Council and the Soudan Expedition. The first couple of pages are missing. The cover is a little stained and some of the pages have blotches on them. This walking stick, which is also a horse measurer, belonged to Atwell George Bendall, the well-known racing man, judge and handicapper in the Western District early in the 20th century. Born in the Caramut district, he was the manager of the ‘Green Hills’ estate at Winslow, a property owned by his father who also operated a livery and coach service at Caramut. When his father died Bendall carried on the family business until the end of the 19th century when he went to live in Warrnambool. A lover of horses, Bendall was an amateur rider of note and an owner of several racehorses. He also took a keen interest in coursing and owned and bred many successful dogs. In Warrnambool he took an interest in trotting and owned several trotters. For the last sixteen years of his life Atwell Bendall was a handicapper for most of the Western District race clubs and his keen judgment and knowledge of horses were greatly admired and appreciated. He was also a judge at agricultural shows and other horse events and this is probably where he was made use of this horse-measuring walking stick. He died in 1922. This is a most significant item as it belonged to the prominent early 20th century horse racing identity in the Western District – Atwell Bendall. It is also of general historical interest as an ingenious object – a walking stick doubling as a horse measurer. This is a mottled brown-coloured wooden walking stick, slightly tapered and with seven segments. It has a wooden knob at the top curved and indented in an acorn shape. The knob has silver coloured nails or tacks driven into the raised sections. The knob lifts out and is actually a wooden ruler with silver casing at the top of the ruler. Also at the top of the ruler, at a right angle to the ruler, is a lift-out metal piece which has a spirit level at the top end and this metal piece is used to rest on the horse to estimate its measurement in hands. There is a leather strap near the top of the walking stick for attachment to the wrist and a gold metal cap at the bottom of the stick. This is the Eighth Reader in the series of school readers introduced in 1928 for the Education Department of Victoria and used extensively in Victorian schools in the early to mid 20th century decades. This copy was in use as a Form Two (Year 8) class set at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s .This book is of general interest, being the final book in the series of school readers that were in widespread use in Victorian schools from the late 1920s to the 1950s. The book is also of interest because it was used at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s and has the signatures of nine pupils who used the book at that time. St. Ann’s College, the Catholic secondary school for girls in Warrnambool in the 1970s, is now incorporated into the co-educational Catholic secondary school in Warrnambool – Emmanuel College. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. It has a Contents page, an Acknowledgments page, reading material of prose and verse, including extracts from books of well-known authors and Notes and Explanations at the back of the book. The cover is brown with the emblem of the Education Department of Victoria on the front and the book is missing its spine covering. The book has many black and white photographs and sketches. This certificate is one of a number held by the Warrnambool and District Historical society which relate to the occasion of Federation of Australia , January 01/1901. Some are for social functions at the time others like this are for more formal occasions. There was a strong local vote for Federation at the referendum in 1898 with district figures 957 voting for and 146 against . By 1899 the vote had increased to 1411 yes and 39 against.. The official federation celebrations were held in Sydney and Warrnambool like towns all over Australia held celebrations. The Mayor and five of Warrnambool's councillors travelled to Sydney for the celebrations. The first federal Member of Parliament for the Warrnambool district was John Chester Manifold of "Talindert," Camperdown. Some local well known people of the time who were contributed in various fields to the Federation spirit, include John Archibald, Willian Astley, Louis Bayer, Richard Kennedy, Walter Murdoch, and Con O'Mahony. This certificate has an added link to Warrnambool in that the son of Councillor W. Henry, Victor Henry, an art student had designed and illuminated the municipal Addresses presented to the Governor general and the Duke of York. This item has historical, artistic social and interpretive significance. It links the most important event of the Federation of Australia to our city. That the art work was completed by Victor Henry, a local person is a significant claim to fame for our city. This service was held on January 28, 1936 at the Mechanics' Institute, Orbost. Born in 1865, George V was the second eldest son of Edward VII and Alexandra 1865. He first visited Australia with his elder brother Prince Albert as midshipmen aboard the HMS Bacchante in 1880. He was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. The Shire of Orbost was a local government area about 380 kilometres east of Melbourne. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994. Originally, Orbost was part of the Bairnsdale Road District which was created on 30 April 1867. Splitting away as part of the Shire of Tambo in 1882, Orbost was first incorporated as a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30 May 1892. It received its present name on 17 February 1893. On 3 January 1913 part of its western riding was annexed to Tambo as its Cunninghame Riding. This program was produced by the Snowy River Mail for a community singalong held in Orbost on Tuesday June 2 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11. In June 1953 , Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and Pakistan, and became the Head of the Commonwealth. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch took place on 2 June 1953. Elizabeth ascended the throne at the age of 25, upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation took place more than a year later because of the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning that follows the death of a monarch. This community event was typical of the general feeling of respect and admiration felt by the rural communities towards the British Royal Family. When early settlers began to arrive on the Snowy River somewhere in the 1880s, the land was mostly swamps and heavily timbered jungle on the river frontages. The swamps were drained bit by bit using hand tools. The frontages were cleared by axe and shovel and fire. Several kinds of crops were experimented with such as hops, hemp and maize. Maize grew particularly well and became the main crop of the district. Lind, MLA, on 13th of February 1942. This new building was a fine type of school of which both the pupils and the HT Leslie Collins were indeed proud. But Orbost continued to develop and the new school was soon over­taxed. This resulted in the erection of two Bristol classrooms in 1947. By 1950, when the school population had reached 500 pupils the opening of the new school at Orbost North was welcomed by all concerned. In 1963 the Department purchased land diagonally opposite the school and developed it as a playing area. In 1965 two LTCs were opened in November, and in October 1968 the Brodribb School building was moved to SS2744 Orbost for use as a general purpose room. (info.
