Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Capital Theatre, Bendigo. Thursday, 10th November, 8pm. This series of Concerts is arranged by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Conductor and Soloist: Walter Susskind. Walter Susskind (with photo), During his two years as resident conductor of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Walter Susskind has left an indelible impression on music lovers by his conducting and his personality, both of which have endured him to concert audiences everywhere. Walter Susskind is now relinquishing his appointment of the permanent conductorship for the A.B.C. in Victoria to return overseas, and this final tour by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra for the 1955 season is also Mr Susskind's finale in Australia. An appealing future of these concerts to be presented over several provincial centres in turn will be the . . . Analytical Notes. Bendigo Concert Series Discontinued. The Australian Broadcasting Commission announces with regret that it has been found necessary to restrict the nimber of concerts presented in Bendigo each year pwing to the lack of sufficient support of these activities. Since 1947 the A.B.C. has presented a series of rour concerts each year in Bendigo. During these years artists who have appeared in the series include Ginette Neveu, Gyorgy Sandor, Erna Berger, the Robert Masters Quartet, Sydney MacEwan, Elena Nikolaidi, Michael Rabin, William kapell, Leon Goosens, Max Rosral, Sulvia Fisher, and many others of world standing. In addition, the Victorian Symphony Orchestra has given performances each year under such eminent conductor as Alceo Galliera, Juan Jose Castro and Walter Sisskind, while last year the seies included a visit by the Sydney Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. While the A.B.C. in anxious to continue its policy of brining artists of world standing to provincial centres, includeing Bendigo, the quire considerable costs incurred. The Highesdt number of subscribers to a series in Bendigo was attained in 1951, when 350 season tickets were purchased. In all other uears, including 1955, the number has fallen below the required minimum, and ir has been decided not to proceed with plans for the 1956 season, although . . . Copy of photograph of Royal visit to Tatura, 5 March 1954. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were greeted on totally renovated station. decorated with masses of flowers and shrubs. The visit to Tatura of Queen Elizabeth 2 was first by a reigning monarch and no other visit has caused such excitement. The Station was highly decorated and the Royal Cypher in golden flowers mounted on scarlet velvet made a perfect background for the artistic scheme. Sewing Machine, 19th Century
This sewing machine, made in Germany in the 19th Century, was used extensively in Tatura Camp 3. Its owner; Mrs Elisabeth Hoffmann, was permitted to bring it with her from Palestine on condition that she would make it available to everyone who wanted to use it. There was a roster system and the machine was in constant use for five years. Because normal dress material was scarce, the internees made clothes out of some of the grey army blankets and burgundy overcoats issued to them. The coats were boiled to remove the burgundy dye, then re-dyed green, navy or black, and converted into various items of clothing. The sewing machine coped well with this heavy use. Caption 2 reads: The first Departmental Headmaster. F.W. Johnson had suggested a school motto of 'Don't drift' because so many pupils tended to drift away from their early teaching. However, Frank Tate, Director of Education, recommended the more positive 'Hold fast'. This was the time of the First World War. The Germans had invaded Belgium...In designing the school badge the colours of the Belgium flag, red, yellow and black were chosen. (From school records.) Rose Bowl, 1956
This trophy was initiated at T.LC. in 1956, donated by Mr H.S. (Tib) Reilly to attract prominent district & Melbourne players to the annual tournament on Australia Day weekend. The conditions were that any player winning the event 3 times would hold the trophy permanently and Mr Reilly undertook to provide a replacement. Mrs Val Constable (nee Huxtable) won the trophy outright for the first time in 1962 and she has donated it to the museum to honour Mr Reilly's contribution to the Tatura community. Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. Within the side walkway of gravel and composite stone is an etched of local activities relating to the Chinese community achievements that can be added to by the community.Open Monument is of aesthetic and historical significance to the people of BallaratArchitectural artwork consisting of large marble panels on a corten steel frame imbedded into a grassed mount.Inscription on plaque: Open Monument 無極紀念碑 / Artist: John Young / Officially Launched by Mr Yumin Song / Chinese Consul-General to Victoria / 6th September 2015 / Open Monument unearths stories of the Chinese diaspora in Ballarat, a name which means/ “resting place” to the traditional custodians - the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung people./ The monument comprises of two artworks: Transculture, a granite-panelled work, evoking stories of alternative worldviews, / modernity, leisure and toil. Whilst Timeline traces the major contributions of the Chinese community in Ballarat, every decade / from the 1850s until the present. This new church built on 6 Clarkmount Road Sassafras was opened on 30th January, 1937 by Moderator Right-Rev. A Irving Davidson, M.A. It replaced the Log Cabin Presbyterian Church which erected in 1925 as a memorial to G H Derry, the first Chairman of the Recreation Reserve. The story behind that is that a cup appeared at the Golf Club (its unknown where it came from) which was inscribed with 1927 J. McCully Peterborough Golf club Open Champion. It was probably not referring to this Peterborough but this club did not hold an Open Championship at that time, so it was decided that they would. The first Open championship was held in 1980 but the record from 1927 was included as it was impetus behind the decision to hold the Open Championship, which continues to this day.
