[These photographs were part of their campaign to the Shire of Eltham in 1975] claiming that the zoning regulations were being breached by the occupants of various factories in the nearby light industrial zone [Brougham Street, Eltham] - to the detriment of those living in adjoining residential zones, and that, despite .. earlier objections and complaints, nothing was done about it." Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th centuryBusinesses from Left to right J. Born in Chiltern in 1875, John T McSwiney moved into his premises in High Street, Wodonga in 1901. He operated his pharmacy from this site for over 64 years. At its peak, John put the Wodonga store under the care of a manager and moved to set up a second pharmacy in Wangaratta. He later returned to his Wodonga pharmacy where although semi-retired John continued to go to work each day up to his 90th birthday. Walsall in England was regarded as the world`s greatest centre of the saddlery trade. The town's craftsmen began to specialise in making bits, stirrups and spurs in the Middle Ages, developing into fully-fledged makers of saddlery and harness, by the end of the nineteenth century. As a result, over a hundred firms were exporting their products throughout the British Empire and beyond. The Walsall firms flourished as horses were so vital to everyday life in Victorian Britain and the colonies. The Walsall area emerged as a major supplier of military saddlery and harnesses, with one company supplying an astonishing 100,000 saddles for the British army in the First World War. The twentieth century saw the rise of light leather goods, such as handbags, cases and gloves. With the coming of the motor car, these products became the mainstay of the Walsall leather industry. Many companies supplied this trade and Dixon tools was one, as a commercial and industrial equipment supplier to the trade. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, including several generations of public transport ticket machines and the world's first desktop electronic calculator The company was founded on 5 July 1878. The badge represents the Victorian Junior Section of the Australian Red Cross Society, which was formed in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I as a branch of the British Red Cross Society (B.R.C.S.), hence the crown on top of the red cross. It wasn't until 1941 that he Australian Branch was Incorporated by Royal Charter. The badge was made in London by J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. James Richard Gaunt and his son Charles Frederick Gaunt established the Birmingham firm of J R Gaunt & Son in 1884. The business operated for over a hundred years and specialised in making buttons for uniforms. This badge is one of a set of badges collected by Dr W R Angus from the organisations in which he was involved. The set of badges is now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, surgeon and oculist. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Forces. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This badge is significant for connecting Doctor Angus with organisations that he supported. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The Collection includes historical medical objects that date back to the late 1800s.Badge; a brass dome'shaped badge with two rows of text around the outer edge and a white enamel centre behind a red enamel cross. This type of camera was in use before bellows became common. The camera belonged to Hugh Strachan who passed it on to an employee, Charlie Lugg. The Strachan family is distinguished in the Geelong wool industry. James Ford Strachan, born in Scotland, established a very successful wool broking business and his sons carried on his work.Wooden case with brass handle lined with green felt containing one sliding box camera, with a brass fitting for a lense, a removable glass focussing screen, which conseals the removable lense inside the camera. Also two small wooden frames for developping the photographs. Also a linen cape and a leather pouch containing metal filters with gradients. Booklet about the life of Charles Lugg who owned the camera before it was passed to his nephew who then donated it to the NWM. Booklet details Lugg's military service, working life in Stachan's wool stores and life in Geelong and Moriac.
