Governor of Victoria, Lord Huntington, visited Tatura in March 1937. He wrote this letter, addressed to The Presidents, Councillors and Citizens of the Shires of Waranga and Goulburn, after his visit. Book presented to the Museum from Tatura RSL showing the work that went into creating the Tatura Water Tower Mural. The Water tower on the north side, depict a full size picture of Sir John Monash in uniform. The south side of the tower depicts a thread of poppies. Sir John was the engineer who designed the water tower which was opened in 1912. A letter from Tatura RSL is in the book.White hard covered book. Front has two pictures of a water tower. One has poppies on it and the other a man in Army uniform. The house was built by John Sebastian Smith who built the first hotel in Merrigum, and occupied by Thomas Alcorn from 1911 until 1967. 1200 2 pages of Notes, written by C French Senior to the Jessep Esq. Starting with Royal Horticultural Society 1855, in Survey Paddock. Purpose of establishment of this enterprise; Committee men: The planting by C French of Taxodium Sempervirens: a great flood and its destruction of the Burnley Gardens: this letter is handwritten. A note from C French, dated 23/5/1929, adds further information to the notes. States that Burnley Gardens were laid out by M Lynch and W Harbison as curator. 1201 Handwritten letter by C French to Charlie, thanking him for sending a copy of an article from The Sun. He comments on omissions from the article, provides names of men involved in the first years of the development of the B Gardens, says a good deal about G Neilson. 2 pages. 1202 Letter addressed to Director Botanical Gardens. Refers to a W. Ward, a horticulturalist and the willow tree Huntingdon Willow - Salix Alba (coerulea) Letter written by Charles French. States that willows were sent to Bot Gardens by Sir Joseph Hooker of Kew. The use of this for cricket bats. Willows being setn to Victorian nurseries in 1850s from England. CF States that he planted the first tree Taxodium sempervirens, in Burnley Gardens. Sir Albert Ernest Coates (1895-1977), surgeon, was born on 28 January 1895 at Ballarat, Victoria, eldest of seven children of Arthur Coates, letter carrier, and his wife Clara Annie, née Eustice, both Victorian born. Although their worldly possessions were few, Arthur and Clara raised their family in an affectionate atmosphere and instilled in them the virtues of honesty, industry and education. They were strong supporters of the Methodist Church. (Australian Dictionary of Biography extract). Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. Although the Beenak Post Office officially closed on 31 August 1951, the Mail Box continued to be used until 1976. The history of Beenak (the town that never was) is part of the Yarra Valley Ranges, and this picture tells the story of the historic MailboxBlack and White Picture of the original Beenak Post Office Letter Box, used for collecting mail during the Beenak Sawmilling operations. The Friends of Kurth Kiln have errected a Commemorative Plaque on site next to the huge gum tree that still carries the scar where the the mail box had been mounted. A full scale replica of the box has been fitted to the shed at Kurth Kiln, made and painted by Henk Bouck under the supervision of ex PMG officer John Waghorn beenak, post office -
