Newspaper, The Age, “It’s the new-look tram”, 24/03/1973 12:00:00 AM
Newspaper clipping titled: The Age, 24/3/73 “It’s the new-look tram” Photo and text of Melbourne’s newest tram Minister for Transport, Mr Wilcox, look at model of new tram at Preston workshops. Mr S Bramich, electrical engineer, worked on project. Photo shows model of tram with full-size prototype behind the two men. Melbourne's new orange-coloured super trams have been designed for an era of one-man operators and women drivers. Cheaper to run. Passengers should find them more comfortable and faster. Will go into service early next month (April?). MMTB Chairman, RF Kirby said board would like to recruit women drivers for trams, especially new super trams. "...very keen to have women tram drivers. But union has objected." Kirby said board had no immediate plans for introduction of one-man operators but trams could be easily adapted. One-man operations could be used in off-peak periods. State Government recently approved calling of tenders for 100 new trams to replace Melbourne's oldest trams. 300 trams are 50 years old. New tram is 53 feet long and 8 feet 9 inches wide. Passengers will enter through front door and purchase ticket from seated conductor. Rear exit door. Improvements to new trams are:, forward boarding means all passengers have to pass conductor, reducing missed-fare problem costing about $1M per year, no running board and tram cannot move until all doors are closed. Reduce compensation payments to passengers for injuries, last year around $30K, faster acceleration and top speed of 45 mph, ventilating fans and heating during the winter, stop lights and flashing turn indicatorstrams, tramways, prototype tramcar, modelling, z class, preston workshops, minister for transport, mmtb chairman -

Book, Sue C Wesson, An overview of the sources for a language and clan atlas of Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales, 1994
This monograph concerns Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales and reviews the ethnographic record available for the study area. A test case is made of one tribe within the study area which requires further research. Overall, the literature review and the case study demonstrate that the ability to undertake detailed reconstructions, as Clark and Barwick have done for the other regions, can be undertaken in Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales, and this model will form the basis of future research.maps, b&w illustrations, b&w photographs, document reproductions, tableswoiworung, bunurong, taungurong, ngurai-illam-wurung, bidawal, maap, norman tindale, diane barwick, aldo massola, eve fesl, ian david clark, george augustus robinson, reverend john bulmer, robert brough smyth, alfred william howitt, moieties, clan names -

Photograph (black & white), Ballarat School of Mines Students visit the New Normanby Mine, 1899, 1899
In 1875 John Rowe enrolled at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) where he studied Metallurgy and Assaying. In 1880 the Britannia Mine closed and John Rowe moved to Launceston working as Manager of the Royal Tasman Gold Mining Company. He returned to Ballarat two years later to manage the Long Gully United Gold Mining Company. In 1885 John Rowe sought work in New Caledonia followed by South Africa. While in South Africa he received an offer from SMB to lecture in Practical Mining, an instructional innovation which involved weekly visits to some of the principle mines in the district. John Rowe took up this position in 1994, but it appears to have been a short lived innovation ending in 1996, possibly due to John Rowe's failing health. (http://guerin.ballarat.edu.au/curator/honour-roll/honourroll_Rowe,John.shtml)Nineteen men, some Ballarat School of Mines students, pose outside Ballarat's New Normanby Mine. Some hold picks and candles. The man in the centre wearing a waistcoat is John Rowe, experienced miner and lecturer in Practical Mining at the Ballarat School of Mines. Functional object - Dressmaker's model, Wolf Form and Co. (New York), 1971
This dressmaker's model has been made by a New York firm (1971 model) and comes from the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool. It would have been used for making and displaying ladies' clothing made at the factory. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he opened a men's wear shop in Warrnambool and manufactured in sute. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop opened in melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff begun in 1951. The company initially specialized in men's trousers but later expanded into both men's and women's clothing. It became an Australia-wide company known throughout the country until it ceased in 2011 and the Warrnambool factory buildings were sold. This dressmaker's model is of considerable interest as a memento of the Fletcher Jones and Staff Company, founded in Warrnambool, employing many local people for a great number of years and known throughout Australia for its quality products and pioneering business model as a founder and staff co-operative.This is a dressmaker's model with the body section (bust and torso) having a fabric cover over a wooden core. The top section is bronze-coloured with a silver rim. Beneath the body section is a wire frame and a metal base on castors. The castors are rusty and the fabric is broken in places.
