Joshua Gliddon wrote Phillip Island in Picture and Story which is referred to in the letter. The McHaffie family were original settlers on the Island. Returned to RDHS from Federation Estate Art GalleryPhoto 1 (7009a) - Former "Ringwood Mail" newspaper office, Adelaide Street, 1955, looking along laneway to west. Lane between Bamford's Timber Yard, corner Warrandyte Rd. and Maroondah Highway, and went to Melbourne St, later called Civic Place. Other buildings were Ham's Billiard Saloon, the two-story Renong Chambers, bottom left Jack Orr's clothes hoists and bottom right Horman & Woolhouse plumbers. All demolished for the building of Eastland in the 1960s. The photo shown is a typical example but may not be in the collection.

Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. Individual items fall in the VC Reference Number range 21001 - 22899 and where possible are grouped by year. Located in the collection of Eltham District Historical Society, this envelope contains four sepia prints ranging in dates from 1923 to 1956. The envelope is postmarked 24 Apr 1958 and on the reverse is noted "Accepted 30/4/58". On the face is witten in pencil "Try 18" being No. 18 Russell Crescent, Fitzroy North. Also noted in blue ink "Mother Louie (or Louise) Down - Sister Hilda". The wedding photo is unidentified except for the date 22 May 1956. It was taken by The Lock wood Studios. Other photos are described on their reverse sides as: "Olive McKay, Mr Pinkerton and self" "Uncle Donald and Aunt Florrie, July 1923" "Jessfield, May 12th, 1928" It is not known why they are held by EDHS or the significance/relationship of the people to the Eltham district.
