Postcard with a view of Sturt St with an ESCo tram westbound, taken from corner with Doveton St, looking east within an embossed map Australia - no Tasmania. Coat of arms also embossed. Has words "Sturt St Ballarat, Looking East" within photograph. In top left hand corner, has Australian Coat of Arms, partially embossed, printed in blue. Same photograph as in Reg Item 838 and similar to Reg Item 4003 and written originally by the same person. On rear, the post card has been divided into two with a the words "Commonwealth of Australia and Post Card" and artistic symbol with the initials "H&B".Early Commonwealth of Australia postcard, after the Post Master General's department formed late 1900's. This one appears to be Model 27 from the early 1950's. This radio was last used in the Office at the Soldiers Memorial Institute most likely pre 1990's.Radio, ASTOR brand, brown Bakelite frame, the glass face has two control knobs. The top line of stations covers Victoria to Tasmania followed by NSW, QLD & SA. At the bottom is 3 bands in red, blue, light green which cover Europe, USA. Silk Postcard Collection 1914-1919, Tom Eastwell collection - postcard No:1, Pre 1914
The popularity of woven sild postcards peaked during the First Workd War 1914-1918. A thriving cottage industry began around 1915 and the quaity and colours of the silks used is extremely high. This card is one of three cards presented by the Tom Eastwell family in 2018. The rear for correspondance, name and postal detailsWoven silk cards were first made in 1900 for the Paris Exhibution and became popular during WWI 1914-1918 . Embroidery depicting flags of France, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium and Italy, laurel leaf wreath, a thistle, red rose and the Red Cross Insignia. The letter is from William Henry Myers No 594 to his Mother describing the photo as a “break up” and he looked like he got a fright in it. It is believed he is 1st on right rear. Yields information about Ballarat and Sturt St c1907 following the information of trams.Printed colour postcard of Ballarat electric tram leaving the Grenville St. terminus, at the bottom end of Sturt St terminus with an early motor bus or taxi in front of the tram crossing to the south side of Sturt St. Has buildings on both sides of Sturt St. in photograph, with some other horse drawn vehicles and many pedestrians. Note, none of the buildings have names shown on them - have been printed out. Photo taken soon after opening, no roof mounted destination boxes. On rear are places for correspondences stamp, address and manufacturers' name in a fancy motif "WTP". Timetable - 60 pages printed on off white sheets, plus light grey cover and in the rear, a foldout map showing tram routes of the PMTT etc, centre stapled, titled "The Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust's Official Time Table", dated July 1918 and priced at 1d. Gives details of the timetables for each routes, fares, signs, notices, tickets and details of the Combined round trips by tram. Has advertisements for Anderson's Furniture of Chapel St Prahran and E. Crook Men's Boys and Boots Chapel St, South Yarra. Map details the Circular Tramway Route, by cable and electric - shows the lines of the PMTT, HTT, rail lines and cable tramways. The train is headed towards Surrey Hills station. In the background are the Hamilton Street shops with advertising posters on their rear walls. The donor George Lister Coop was about 27 years of age when he took this photo. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. He has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database. A black & white photo of a Harris train destined for Flinders Street that has passed through Mont Albert station, which can just be seen in the background. This coloured photograph shows the re-floating of the P. S. Adelaide on a soil ramp, being encouraged (rear entry) down the temporary slipway onto the river. The temporary slipway is clearly visible with a workman (possibly Kevin Hutchinson) standing at thelast log as the boat nears the waters' edge. A winching float and an outboard motor boat are at the right. Spectators line the banks of the ramp. Part of a photo sequence no.P000041; P000045; P000046; P000047; P000048 of P. S. Adelaide re-floating.The re-floating of the P. S. Adelaide was a Significant community social event evident by the number of spectators in the photograph. The community had invested a great deal of time and money into re-floating the paddlesteamer. The newspaper covered the event in detail with a number of action shots as the boat made its rear entry from the temporary slipway onto the river.
