Document, Honours and Awards - DSO for Captain Stanley Savige 1919, 1919
A photocopy of the Honours and Awards published in 1919 that included Legatee Stan Savige receiving his DSO from General Sir W R Birdwood. It refers to his work protecting the Assyrian refugees in Persia from the Turks. Text includes: "In pursuance of the authority delegated to me by His Imperial Majesty, the King Emperor, I make the following awards for gallantry and distinguished service in the field:- To be Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. Captain Stanley George SAVIGE, MC, Australian Imperial Force. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in command of a small party sent out to protect the rear of a column of refugees who were being hard pressed by the enemy. By his energy, resource and able dispositions the hostile troops, many of whom were mounted, were kept at a distance, although in greatly superior force. He hung on to position after position until nearly surrounded, but on each occasion extricated his command most skilfully. His cool determination and fine example under fire inspired his men and put heart into the almost panic-stricken refugees, thereby averting what might have been a very serious situation."A record of the war service of Legatee Stan Savige and the recognition he received.White foolscap photocopy of General Sir Birdwood awarding the DSO to Legatee Savigestan savige, service award -

Cricket Bat, Pre 1915
Presented by W Hampson, Used & loved by Rowland Hill and skillfully weilded by him in many matches played for Harcourt cricket club. Harcourt was admitted to the Bendigo District Cricket association in 1924. Formed from a small community it was said “ everyone played cricket in Harcourt” Most of the players lived on fruit orchards, owned the status symbol of the time – a motor car- and were widely regarded as people of substance. Clearly they possessed the necessary pre-requisites for acceptance into the wider cricket community. Dates from the era when ‘gentlemen’ played cricket. Domestic object - Ironstone China Wash bowl and jug, 1900 - 1930
Ironstone china pieces were common domestic items during the 19th to mid 20th century in many Australian households. This kind of china is not porcelain but porous earthenware, made of clay mixed with feldspar. Patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, it was an immediate success and became widely produced by a range of Staffordshire potters. J & G Meakin Pottery dates back to 1845 when James Meakin started a pottery business at Lane End in Staffordshire.nIn 1848 he moved the business to Hanley in Staffordshire, before retiring in 1852 and handing the business over to his two sons James and George, who carried on with the pottery, trading as J & G Meakin. The "SOL" and sun face trademarks were registered in 1912. The firm was taken over by the Wedgwood Group in 1970. In 2000, production under the Meakin name ceased. W. H. Grindley was founded at the Newfield Pottery in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (principal partner). Mr Turner and Mr Alfred Meakin were also involved. Early advertisements stated that they produced Earthenware and Ironstone China - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American and Australian markets. The mark on this jug was used from c1891 until 1925. W. H. Grindley China was manufactured until 1991, making it one of the last Stoke on Trent potteries. These items are representative of a common domestic item used by households in the Wodonga district and throughout Australia, many manufactured specifically for the Australian market.A white ironstone jug and bowl. The jug features a leaf design embossed on the surface. The bowl has a small circle pattern around the rim. They are not as set as the jug bears the mark W. H. Furniture - Wooden dresser with a mirror from the Terminus Hotel, Wodonga
The wooden dresser came from the Terminus Hotel in High St., Wodonga. In 1873, James Thompson Hatch built the two-storeyed Terminus Hotel at 79 Sydney Road (later known at High Street), then sold it to George Day and Kenneth McLennan for £1,230. It was first licensed to J. G. Morton in January 1874. In 1879, Annie Allen, from Ireland, took over as licensee of the hotel containing 14 rooms, after she and her husband, George James Allen, purchased it. He became licensee in 1883. Under the Allens, the Terminus became, ‘a principal rendezvous for visitors to the town.’ September 1888 saw additions to the building that included a billiard room, a dining room, and 18 other rooms. Following the death of her husband in 1889, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the licence was transferred to William Carkeek. In the early 1900s the Hotel was thoroughly renovated. The Terminus Hotel was for sale by auction on 5th March 1909. It comprised about 50 rooms, a two-storey building built of brick and iron with hot and cold water service and acetylene gas throughout. The principal hotel in Wodonga, was let from 1st January 1909 on a seven years’ lease at a rental of £9 per week. 1935 saw extensive improvements by proprietor W. P. Kinney, while in 1941 further extensive improvements were carried out to make a good hotel better. A pall of shock and disbelief descended over Wodonga’s historic Terminus Hotel on 1st June 1998 when it was destroyed by fire then demolished in 1999. The site was sold for almost $1 million and redeveloped for a medical clinic. The wooden dresser has local significance as it came from the Terminus Hotel in High St., Wodonga.Wooden dresser with a mirror, two small side drawers and two large drawers with circular recessed metal handles and metal castors.dressers, dressers with mirrors, wooden dressers -

The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Left to right: W. Orchard, Hec Lloyd, Jack Hinchcliffe, Charlie Edmondson, George Lynch, Jack Bowden, Driver Tommy Black. "Edward Henty" Considered by many to be Victorian Railways' greatest passenger locomotives, the 4 S class steam locomotives were the first 3 cylinder steam locomotives. This small class was built to run the Melbourne to Albury passenger trains and spent their entire careers on the North East line. They were built unstreamlined and ran in this condition until 1937. The streamlining modifications complimented the all new "Spirit Of Progress" carriages. The S class ran the "Spirit" until 1952 at which time the newly delivered B class diesels took over. Photograph - Mac's Hotel, Wodonga, c1870s
“Mac's Hotel" in Wodonga West, one of Wodonga's earliest hotels, was owned by William Christie McFarlane who arrived in Melbourne in December 1854 from Stirling, Scotland. He spent his first three years mining for gold at Beechworth. For the next three years he was the manager of the King’s Hotel at Wooragee, which was owned by his father-in-law, Charles David King. In 1860 he bought 180 acres of land at Wodonga, eventually extending his holdings to 1,000 acres on which he farmed. He called his property “Abbey Craig” after his home in Scotland. In time he owned several properties in Wodonga, a small vineyard and 'Mac's Hotel'. Mac’s Hotel was a popular meeting place for teamsters and other travellers on the Sydney Road. It opened in the early 1860s and the license was at times in the name of W. C. McFarlane and at other times held by his wife, Mary McFarlane. William had several positions during his life in Wodonga including serving as Postmaster and conducting a Commission and Insurance Agency business. He was appointed Secretary to the first Wodonga Building Society. W. C. McFarlane also filled the position of Sheriff’s Officer, Registrar of Births and Deaths and Marriages, and Justice of the Peace. W. C. McFarlane served as a member of the Wodonga Shire Council for several years including three terms as Shire President: 1889-90, 1890-1891 and 1894-95. He passed away in Wodonga in December 1906. After his death, the license of Mac’s Hotel continued to be held by Mary McFarlane until her death in November 1910. The license was not renewed and the hotel was taken over as a residence by their son, Walter McFarlane. Unfortunately, on 25 January 1913, Walter was assisting neighbours fighting grass fires about 3 miles away when his own home was completely destroyed by fire, bringing to an end the long history of the popular hostelry, Mac’s Hotel. This image is significant because it documents an early business in Wodonga conducted by a prominent Wodonga resident.Black and white image of people standing, on horseback and in coach outside Mac' Hotel, West Wodongamac's hotel, hotels wodonga -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Painting - Oil painting, Madeline M.Ravenna Lewellin, Start Point Light, Devonshire, 1875
This painting was inspired by an original painting by Wilhelm Melby held at the National Gallery of Victoria. Melby is a Danish artist (1824-1882). It depicts a famous Devonshire coastal region famous now for its lighthouse and the pick up point for the pilot when entering waters approaching Dartmouth. The sailing vessels pre-date the construction of the famous lighthouse. Over the centuries the view would have been familiar to many sailors as they left or approached the English mainland and south coast ports in the English Channel. Madeline Mary Ravenna Lewellin (1854 – 24 November 1944) was born in Victoria to Dr John Henry Hill Lewellin, a physician, and Grace Elizabeth (née Danneby). She was one of five daughters, and the family lived in Prahran. Lewellin's brother, Captain Herbert Gordon Hill Lewellin, was a commander in the P. and O. fleet (apprentice on the Romanoff, Lieutenant RNR on the HMS Arethusa in 1899, RMS Mongolia in 1913 sunk in 1917, Naldera in 1920). She studied painting at the National Gallery School in 1879 under Eugene von Guerard. She's also known for collecting and painting specimens, and became a member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria in 1885. In 1884 she won a silver medal for her studies of fungi. She collected plants for Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the variety of Dicrastylis lewellinii (Purple sand-sage) is named after her. Miss Lewellin, who had a love of the sea and ships as subject matter is listed in 1910 as a donor as a 10/6 member donating to the motor launch fund and in 1918 as a working member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild which involved regular volunteer shifts at the Mission to Seamen on canteen and other duties.Marine art, Maritime artThis oil painting has a dark polished wood and gold leaf slip. The painting depicts two masted boats. The choppy sea takes up the lower-third of the painting, and the other two-thirds of the image of made up of stormy grey clouds. A rocky cliff face can be seen on the right-hand side of the painting. A small church can be seen on the hillside. The ship on the left third of the painting sits on the horizon line of the sea. The centre ship with two masts appears to be leaning to the right and its deck is exposed to the viewer showing four men attempting to handle the masts and rigging.
