A planting of a pine tree at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on 17 April 1991. Legacy had a programme of donating trees grown from seeds from Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows 4 Gallipoli veterans standing by the newly planted pine tree. One shows President John Sullivan with the shovel. Also with representatives of John Allison / Monkhouse who provided the plaques for the tree. A different photo was used in the July 1991 issue of the Widows' Newsletter (later called The Answer) and explained two small Lone Pine trees were donated in appreciation of the care extended by the hospital to widows and dependents of veterans. Special guests included WW1 Gallipoli veterans who had revisited Gallipoli for its 75th Anniversary. White paper labels say: "Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' Lives on. Two lone pine trees, propagated from Gallipoli Lone Pines, were presented on behalf of Melbourne Legacy to the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital by the President, Legatee John Sullivan. The trees were presented in appreciation of the care extended by the Hospital to widows and dependants of veterans." "Commemorative plaques. Managing Director of John Allison / Monkhouse, Mr Clive Allison and Legatee Rob Allison presented bronze commemorative plaques which will be installed by the trees." Shows two men measuring around the base of a Cumberland Valley giant tree. An early black and white photograph of a Cumberland Valley giant tree. This photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire between 1878 and 1904. Nicholas John Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. Taken in 1908, this photograph, though rather blurry, gives an indication of the location of the early settler properties in the valley in relation to one another. European trees have been planted at 'Kalorama' , the first home of Ellis Jeeves. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph looking across hillside with large trees and rooftops visible. The scarred tree is located on a hillside in a local reserve. The bark has been removed in the past to make a boat or other large utensil. Melbourne's skyline can be seen faintly in the distance in the middle of the photograph with local suburban development in the middle distance. The set of 20 photographs were taken of a number of archaeological ands sacred sites in the Bulla district. 1. Kiewa Valley Consolidated School was established in 1953 combining Dederang North, Kergunyah, Gundowring, Kiewa, Gundowring Upper, Red Bluff, Charleroi and Gundowing North schools on a 10 acre site with 11 rooms at Kiewa. The bark was cut from the canoe tree, by aboriginal craftsmen, to produce a canoe for fishing in the rivers running through the Kiewa Valley either before or just after the 1800's. The tree trunk, located at Kiewa, would have been used at the beginning of European settlement in the Kiewa Valley or just before contact was made. 2. Pictorial record of the graves of early pioneers C Ibbotson, Mrs Elizabeth Eyre and John Eyre who died between 1858 – 1904, all located at Tawonga Homestead 1. The above schools are in the Kiewa Valley. The date and number of combined schools give insight into the change in population and families in the Kiewa Valley before and after 1953. The tree was found along the Kiewa River and indicates that Aborigines lived by the river and used tree bark to craft canoes to cross rivers and to fish in the deeper sections of the river. 2. This pine tree (Allepo Pine, Pinus halepensis) a native of the Gallipoli Peninisula (Gelibolu, Turkey), was grown from a cutting obtained from the War Memorial Canberra and planted in the Mortlake Botanic Gardens in 2002. It replaces the original which grew outside the Mortlake RSL Hall which blew down in a storm c.2000. That tree (Allepo brutius)came from 'the original on Gallipoli' and was planted to commemorate 'fallen comrades' in 'the Jubilee year 1965.' However, two soldiers first brought home pine cones direct from that fateful battlefield. . One was Sgt. Keith McDowell of the 24th Btn. His aunt, Mrs. Emma Gray of Grassmere (Vic.) planted the seeds c. 1928 and four seedlings resulted. One was planted in Wattle Park, Melbourne, one at the Shrine of Remembrance, one at the Soldier's Memorial Hall at The Sisters (c.15 km. south of Mortlake) and one at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. The First World War (or 'Great War') and in particular the battle for the Gallipoli Peninsula is of immense national significance. Lone Pine or Plateau 400 was the scene of a major offensive on August 6th 1915. All the trees on the ridge at this point were cut down but one, which was dominated by the 'Lone Pine'. In three days of fighting more than 2,000 Australians lost their lives and seven Victoria Crosses were won. Two Australian soldiers souvenired pine cones - one was brought back to Victoria (see above).
