Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. Typically, the fur hat might be purchased from the furrier to match the colour and often the pelt of the coat or stole, rather than from a milliner. Hats, like coats and stoles were often dyed to achieve uniformity of colour. Tastes in the colour of furs also changed over time, so hats, coats and stoles could be updated to match prevailing tastes. Until the 1960s in Australia, there were many furriers, who usually brought from Europe experience in identifying fur types. With the decline in the fur industry, these skills are noticeably scarcer in Australia today.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. Etobicoke - then on the outskirts of Toronto, and now a part of Toronto proper - was designated as a borough between 1967-1984. It celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1975. Launch of Eureka Reminiscences, a publication by Ballarat Heritage Services. This book, a collection of memories about Eureka, was researched, created and printed by Ballarat Heritage Services. On the 50th anniversary of Eureka in 1904, men and women wrote about their experiences during the Eureka Rebellion on 3 December 1854. Clothing. Pointed lapel collar, with underside of collar lined with felt. Two brass metal badges in a Leidertafel style - one on each side of collar. Cloth circular badges at the top of each sleeve are embroidered with a coat-of-arms, below which are two shields, one blue, and embroidered with a bunch of grapes, one red embroidered with a sheaf of wheat, a sheep, and perhaps a symbol of the landscape. Two breast pockets, rectangular with rounded lower corners and a shield shaped flap, closed with a 2 cm brass button impressed with a laurel wreath, and horn, suspended by a cord, and triple loop-a replica of British Light Infantry buttons. Two lower ''pockets'' are flaps only, giving the impression of a pocket only. Jacket lined with blue taffeta-like fabric-possibly polyester. One internal bound pocket inside right front. Four 2.5cm brass buttons (as on pockets) at centre front opening. 'Lost Glories: a memorial to forgotten Australian buildings' was published by David Latta in 1986. It tells the story of a number of significant Australian buildings that had previously been demolished. A chapter in the book was devoted to Goathland, later known as Tara Hall. To supplement the text, he sourced photographs from a range of suppliers, chiefly the Royal Women's Hospital which had once owned Tara Hall, but had sold it in 1960. This is one of the photographs donated to KHS by the author. The Grand Staircase of Tara Hall, circa 1957. The central hallway and stairs of Tara Hall, (previously named Byram, Goathland and Lowan). Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, designed this Studley Park Road mansion, of which the hallway was a significant feature, for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888. Tara Hall, one of the great houses in Kew was demolished in 1959-60. Possibly Marc Strizic, photographer (1928-2012).
