Villa Alba Museum
Document, Andrew Thorn, Villa Alba Condition Survey 2004
This report documents all deterioration to the painted surfaces at Villa Alba. It continues on from earlier surveys in 1986 and 1996, and follows recommendations by Artcare that the building should be surveyed every five years. The five year frequency has not yet been achieved and the conditions described in this report underline the need to adhere to this frequency. The report also outlines the installation of movement monitors throughout the building and reports on the readings taken after three months. These short term readings are not of any great concern but illustrate that the system is working and sensitive to small changes even over such a short period. This report includes a CD containing images of each room. There are available light digital images of variable quality but they do document all of the visible components of each room. This report documents all deterioration to the painted surfaces at Villa Alba. Villa Alba Museum
Document, Dr James Broadbent, The Garden: A Report, 2005
Villa Alba’s garden is a reconstruction, but in its design it is as accurate to its late nineteenth century form as the available evidence and Xavier College’s requirements, allowed. This is so, despite the 1890s garden having been progressively destroyed, built on and reformed as a hospital garden during the third quarter of last century. Yet, with its combination of preserved architectural and some archaeological features, and a largely accurate re-created form, Villa Alba’s new garden is a major interpretational component of the property which allows the visitor to comprehend its original design and functions and provides an essential historical context for the house as a major suburban villa.Introduction / p1.Features of Heritage Significance / p1-2. Book, Rachel Henning, Letters of Rachel Henning, 1986
From the comfort and culture of rural England with its ordered estates and "green lanes and fields", to the dusty heat of a rough, unfloored cabin in outback Queensland — that is just part of the journey Rachel Henning made and reports on in her letters. Yet these reveal no sorry tale of struggle in adversity — amazingly they form a lively adventure story and a vivid family saga. Expertly edited by David Adams, a former editor of the Sydney Bulletin magazine, the collection reads like a novel — partly of courtships and romances, partly of the progress of a pioneering family, and partly of Rachel Henning's own progress towards acceptance of her new way of life. The letters were first published in the Bulletin in 1951 and were so well received that they were quickly presented in book form. Thereafter they have scarcely been out of print and the grace, liveliness and gossipy intimacy of Rachel's prose have earned them a unique place in Australian literature. This edition is illuminated with illustrations of the period - some believed to be by Rachel herself, others by members of her family and others by artists and sketchers who would have been Rachel's contemporaries. Wherever possible, the work of women has been included. Taken from sketchbooks and note pads, their often unfinished images give as intimate a view of life in Australia from the 1850s to the 1880s as do Rachel's letters. Book, Elizabeth Backhouse, Against time and place, 1990
Against Time and Place is a highly imaginative and well-crafted re-creation of a family history which transcends the particular to become a fascinating microcosm of British migration and settlement in Australia. The lives of members of the Booth and Backhouse families unfold against a rich backdrop of places and events, including the coal-mines and tenant farms of Yorkshire; the First World War and the Russian Revolution; the goldrushes, pioneering the wheatbelt and small town life of Western Australia; the Great Depression; the Second World War and its aftermath. 'What Elizabeth Backhouse has done in Against Time And Place is to unravel her family's history and make it live and sing for us all. The stories told are engaging and varied, ranging from the pastoral to the spine-chilling, and the prose in which they are told is evocative, intimate yet dignified, carrying sometimes the cadences of poetry. Like all the best stories, they reveal much but leave more unspoken, leaving the reader to mull over subtle implications. . . In all, a delightful and engaging book.' Photograph, Ithaca Earthquake, 1953
Severe earthquakes struck across the Ionian Islands in Greece in 1953, causing widespread devastation. Some villages were totally destroyed resulting in many people forced to relocate and a further wave of emigration to other countries, including Australia.Following the post WW2 migration from Ithaca, the earthquakes brought about yet another wave of migration from the island. It was the last most significant period of migration from the island.A black and white photograph of ruins caused by the earthquake which occurred in the Ionian Islands in 1953. -

Photograph, Galatis' Port Melbourne shop, c1930s
Gerasimos Galatis is the shopkeeper standing outside his confectionary shop at 225 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. The chocolates were home made and were artistically presented, especially at Easter. He and his wife Ellie ran the business in Port Melbourne for over thirty years and it was a very popular venue especially as it was near the former picture theatre in Port Melbourne. This was yet another example of the various businesses which early Ithacan Greek immigrants owned and ran successfully throughout the first half of the twentieth century.A sepia photograph mounted on board of a man standing outside a confectionary shop. A variety of sweets are displayed attractively in the shop window which has a sign declaring the confectionary are 'Home Sweets'
