William Ward 1820- 1908 was born in Norfolk and emigrated with his wife Ann Ostler aboard the SS Kent in 1853. The voyage took 77days. William Ward JP was a prominent figure in East Brighton . William was elected to the Moorabbin Road Board in 1863, JP at Cheltenham Court, and Shire President 1875-82. He was appointed Post Master at East Brighton in 1865 and held the position until his death in 1908. William's Municipal career extended over 30 years and the 'Southern Cross Newspaper Brighton paid him tribute in the obituary January 25th 1908. William and Anne Ward had 10 children but only 5 survived. Elizabeth Emma Ward 1963- 1921, their eldest child, married Henry Box 1839-1913 and they had 9 children but 2 died in infancy. Henry Box purchased land in Tucker Road East Brighton (Bentleigh) 1870 to establish a market garden . White cardboard mount, 35mm slide, from the Association of Railway Enthusiast's film strip titled "Provincial Tramway Film Strip" of Ballarat Trams bogie No. 35 and four single truck cars in the storage loop, or City Loop at the east end of Sturt St. No. 35 has a "Bray Raceway Trotting Friday Night" on the front of the tram. The film strip notes (Reg. In 1951 plans were made for the construction of a gymnasium to be situated in the grounds of St Kilda Road. These 4 plans specify the building construction notes, present front and east elevations, and show how part of the hall could be transformed into bedrooms in the future. There are 2 copies of each plan, consisting of identifical copies of the east elevation and different notes printed/handwritten on the front, side and top elevations. "Bernard Junck" enlisted No. VX21273 age 21 years in 2/2nd Pioneers on 3.6.1940. Embarked for the Middle East on 7.7.1941. Wounded in Action with GSW to the left foot 9.7.1941. Rejoined unit 4.8.1941. Embarked from the Middle East and disembarked at Batavia Java. Reported missing approx. 7.3.1942 then as POW. Transported to Japan on 15.1.1945, recovered at Omuta, Japan on 13.9.1945. Transferred to Manila then to Sydney and discharged from the AIF on 18.12.1945 with the rank of Private. This monument was originally situated on the median strip in High Street, outside the original Town Hall building, which subsequently became the town's Library, and is now the Shire Offices I.T Department. The memorial was moved some time in the 1960's to it's present site, which is now immediately surrounded by the Shire of Campaspe Echuca Library which was built in the early 2000's . The memorial now also mentions other wars of the 20th Century.The memorial now represents all people from the surrounding districts who have been lost to all Wars. The memorial is the focus of the Anzac Day ceremonies.
