The United Protestant Church at Woomera was built at a cost of 10,000 pounds. It was opened on 14 October 1956 by the Governor General Sir Robert George. The church was dedicated by Chaplain General A. Brooke and Principal Air Chaplain R.C. Russell. In October 1863 the Rev. James Bickford visited Sale to explore the possibilities of establishing a Methodist cause there. In March 1864 a group of 8 local men petitioned Conference to appoint a minister. The men were: Nehemiah Guthridge, G. Ross, J.H. Walters, J.E. Derrick, G.E. Hawkins, R. Gibbs, J.J. Drew, J. James. The Rev. Henry Baker arrived in the Gippsland Circuit later in 1864. The first Methodist services in Sale were held in the Mechanics Institute, but by July 1865 a Methodist church had been opened for worship. A Sunday School was constructed in 1886. The Sale Methodist Church was renovated at a cost of 2500 pounds in 1951. The new Sale Methodist Church was opened on 25 September 1965.B & W interior view of the new Sale Methodist Church. Otira was designed and built in 1887 by architect Mr Crouch, first Secretary of the Institute of Architects for Mr Henry Berry, founder of a successful wholesale grocery business. The house was acquired by the Methodist Church in 1923 for use as a home missionary training college. The house is of faced stone on a bluestone foundation. The large front door is surrounded by lead light windows surmounted by a fan light. On 3 February 1974 the Revs. W.M. Trewin and Fred Strickland became ministers of the new Mt. Waverley joint Methodist/Presbyterian parish. Rev Bill Trewin born 1926 Moonee Ponds. Worked in two home missions: Western District and Gippsland. Whilst studying at Queen's College did a vacation appointment in Nhill, where he met Jean Bound. Bill and Jean married 1953. Bill was ordained in 1956. His appointments included Dunolly, Mornington, West & East Bentleigh, Moonee Ponds, Mt Waverley and Noble Park. In between his appointments at Bentleigh and Moonee Ponds Bill lived in Milan, where he ministered to both Italian and English speaking Congregations. Served as Chairman of the Presbytery of Westernport 1985-1986. Frederick Phillips Strickland b. 1910. Ormond College. Ordained into the Presbyterian Church 1941 Rainbow-Jeparit. Married Margaret Webb (1886 - 1946) in 1916. Appointments included Hawthorn, Stawell, Preston and Devonport. Methodist Chaplain in the A.I.F., Methodist Chaplain at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. Home Missions 1953 - 1964. Arthur William Preston was born in 1912. Following his ordination into the Methodist Church he was stationed in Mareeba and Townsville in North Queensland. From 1944 to 1948 he was Field Secretary for the Queensland Methodist Centenary Celebrations, conducting evangelistic missions throughout Queensland and assisting in raising the sum of 100,000 pounds for development work within the Queensland Methodist Church. From 1948 to 1963 he was superintendent of the West End Methodist Mission in Brisbane. In 1963 he was awarded the O.B.E. From 1963 - 1966 he was Associated Minister at the Adelaide Central Mission. During his ministry in Adelaide he established and directed the Life Line Telephone Counselling Service. During 1966 and 1968 he was Associate Minister in the Glen Iris Circuit, Victoria. From 1968 until his retirement at the end of 1981, Arthur Preston was the Superintendent of what is now Wesley Central Parish Mission (Central Methodist Mission prior to Church Union in 1977. In 1982 he was awarded the Order of Australia. The nurses would have been employed at the Sunbury Asylum, which functioned for 120 years until in closed in 1992. The entire complex is now a housing estate, known as Jacksons Hill.Sunbury Asylum like other similar institutions were establish in outer rural areas or regional towns across the state.
