A copy of Dimitri (known as James) Sofianos' Commonwealth of Australia Naturalisation Certificate issued from Sydney on 22 June 1928. Australian citizenship offered significant rights and was therefore taken up by many Ithacan migrants once they became established and when they fulfilled the requirements which at the time of Dimitri's naturalization were more onerous for those who were not 'natural born' British subjects. Prior to 1949, Australian naturalisation meant citizens became British subjects. It was not until 26 January 1949 the status of Australian citizen was created when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 came into force. And it was not until the 1973 under the Whitlam Labor government that the distinction between migrants from Commonwealth and other countries in terms of ability to become Australian citizens was abolished. The previous residence requirements of 1 year (Commonwealth migrants) and 5 years (non-Commonwealth migrants) to become Australian citizens was replaced by a common residence period of 3 years, but with a six-month transition period.A scanned copy on A4 paper of a certificate of Naturalization.migration

This is one letter in a series of eighteen letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild and, as a Guild member, was strongly involved with the social activities and events organised to entertain visiting seafarers. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was an integral arm of the fundraising that enabled the building of the Mission to Seafarers. This is one in a series of letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild during the 1920s. She seems to have struck up a number of friendships with seafarers who used the facility. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was responsible for much of the fundraising that constructed and maintained the organisation from its inception in 1902. They were also responsible for arranging dances and other social activities designed to make seafarers welcome in a strange environment.The purpose of the Mission to Seafarers is, as it always was, to provide comfort and welfare services to visiting seafarers. Longstaff's 'Immortal shrine', also known as 'Eternal silence', depicts endless columns of ghostly soldiers marching past the Cenotaph on a rainy Remembrance Day in 1928. The Cenotaph itself has a surreal presence, gauntly white in front of the sombre blue-back buildings that dissolve into the background.
