Mrs George Cumpston, formerly Miss Elizabeth Newman, of Mont Albert (See also 1289, Mr George William Cumpston) They were married in 1876. He was a commercial traveller. Their property was in the area of Mont Albert between the railway line and Mont Albert Road and Elgar Road. Listed as living in Box Hill in the 1903 electoral roll. The couple were active members of the Box Hill Methodist Church. Photograph from ‘The Jubilee of Box Hill Methodist Church 1883-1933’. By 1909 they had moved to Hawthorn where they lived form many years; later lived in Kew.A black and white photograph of a lady identified as Mrs G. W. Cumpston. Born in 1879, Albert Jones owned the property Golden Glen at Wattle Glen. He was an orchardist and a very busy photographer, travelling over the Diamond Valley area recording everyday events, street scenes, and visiting homes to take family groups. With the help of Claude Burrows, cousin of Mrs Arthur Jones, he built hides from which to photograph local bird life. His hundreds of glass negatives lay forgotten in the basement darkroom until A,J. Spark of Balwyn purchased Golden Glen from Albert Jones's widow in the 1970s. His unclassified negatives are gradually being sorted by Mr Spark. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. The photo may have been taken in the back yard of 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Mont Albert State School was officially opened on 23rd April 1917. The school became Mont Albert Central School in 1918, taking in Forms 1 and 2. The school remained a Central School until 1964, when the secondary years formed the basis of a new High School, the Box Hill North High School, later to be named Koonung Secondary College. As Laurie was in the photo of Class 2B, this photo may include one of her siblings. This is part of a large collection of material related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to Surrey Hills and Mont Albert. Laurie Young was the daughter of Beryl Mair (1916-1976) and Ernest Lance Young (1915-1999). The family lived at 5 York Street and later 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Laurie was born on 18 August 1947. Albert and Hazel Crump at their home ‘Hazeldene’, 1 Leopold Crescent in 1916. ‘Hazeldene’ was opposite the end of Albert Crescent. Albert and Hazel lived here from the time of their marriage in 1913 until 1918 when they moved back to Dandenong. This Federation house is of rather unusual design with verandas on the front corners and the centre room projecting. It was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by units. From 1913-1918 Albert was proprietor of the grocery store in Canterbury Road (next to the present Surrey Lodge). This was owned by Alfred Geer and had opened in 1885 by George Sim. Albert E. Dorling was the Instructor in Printing at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1933. The art school was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. The objectives of Typographical Instruction at the Ballarat Technical Art School was to develop an appreciation of art in printing; to create and foster a wholesome respect for books; to develop a justifiable pride in persona achievement; to broaden the educational and social outlook; to broaden the field of vocational choice; to prepare for effective entrance into the printing trade; to give mastery of many of the principles of design; to help in forming habits of accuracy, thoroughness, neatness and industry; to give opportunity to turn out a product of use, beauty and value; to cultivate appreciation of the value of co-operation and service; to aid in mastery of other school subjects,particularly English; to provide an appropriate instructional medium for pupils whose constructive instincts desire this method of expression; to provide experience which will show the practical application and value of academic subjects.Coloured soft covered book bound with a brown ribbon. Victorias first quarantine station was established in Port Ormond on 24 April 1840 when the government immigrant ship "Glen Huntley" arrived in the Port Phillip District flying the yellow quarantine flag . The site is marked by a cairn and plaque that was unveiled in 1985. In 1990 a second plaque was affixed to the cairn to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship. It was unveiled at a gathering of descendants of the original passengers on 22 April 1990 by the oldest known descendant, Albert John Buntine MM.Colour photographInscription on 150th anniversary plaque: This plaque commemorates the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship 'Glen Huntley' at a gathering of descendants of the original passengers. Unveiled on April 22nd 1990 by Albert John Buntine MM, aged 95. Oldest known descendent. The inscription on the original plaque is: This cairn marks the site of Victorias first quarantine station, which was established on the 24th April 1840 when the government emigrant ship "Glen Huntley" arrived in the Port Phillip District flying the yellow quarantine flag. The site became St Kilda's first official burial ground and the graves of the early colonists remained here until 1898 when the remains were re-interred in the St Kilda Cemetery. Unveiled by the Hon. R W Walsh MLA Member for Albert Park, Minister for Public Works, Assistant Minister for Employment and Industrial Affairs, 7th November 1985. This project was initiated by the Historical Society of St Kilda and sponsored by the Lions Club of Elwood for the 150th Anniversary of the State of Victoria.
