The Australian Natives Association (ANA) Benefit Society was formed in 1871 at a meeting of young men in Grimwood's Hotel, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. The Association was one of many friendly societies that also aimed to promote the moral, social and intellectual advancement of its members. The young founders restricted membership to native-born Australians, but there were no Koories among them. The Australian Natives Association Ballarat Branch (No4) was founded in 1874. The association’s modest building was based in Camp Street and the branch was one of the most active in the colony, playing a key role in Federation. The Ballarat branch of the ANA was wound up in 1957 and the double storey building has since been used as for office space most recently for employment companies such as Tracey Recruitment. Ballarat's ANA Hall has heritage status under the City of Ballarat’s Camp Street heritage overlay HO186, however it is not listed by either the Victorian Heritage Register or the National Trust.Handwritten letter glued onto a lined page. The letter is signed by John Gray (President) and Fred Wainwright (secretary). Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1943) . She moved to London in 1947 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1961 and 1975 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. This sculpture by Inge King was purchased in 1967 with funds raised by staff and students of Ballarat Teachers' College, a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia. During this era a collection was made which resulted in an annual purchase or commission of an artwork of note. Lara RUSSELL Lara Russell was a student of Graphic Design and Multimedia at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy when she undertook this work. The work won the 2013 Lucato Peace Prize. Established at Federation University Australia in 2004, the Lucato Peace Prize is offered annually with the generous support of Mr George Lucato. The Prize is an annual acquisitive award, open to all enrolled Federation University Australia students and senior secondary students enrolled at a City of Ballarat secondary school or college. The winner of the Lucato Peace Prize is decided annually by a formal judging panel and is awarded to the student whose work best illustrates or expresses 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. This artwork comprises 12 postcards each with an individual word in a gold box. Artist's Statement: The collection of postcards creates a sentence that reflects on war being an opposition to life itself. The instant we agree to destruction and conflict, we ourselves have lost the freedom and peace to live a healthy and prosperous life by giving all out hear to the cause of war.
